WWDC 2025 rumors: Apple may have muted rollout for June event

Yahoo2 days ago

Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference is less than a week away, though industry-watchers report that this year's keynote may seem muted compared to 2024.
Last year's edition was dominated by the announcement of Apple Intelligence features but also saw updates to a suite of operating systems by the tech giant.
The week will kick off with a keynote event on Monday, June 9 and be followed by a "Platforms State of the Union." Apple said in a press release that there will be over 100 technical sessions as well as group and one-on-one lab sessions for developers.
Here's what you need to know about the rumors surrounding WWDC 2025.
Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reported that Apple is preparing a modest rollout of artificial intelligence features, targeting WWDC 2026 to make a larger splash.
Gurman wrote in the Power On newsletter that the most significant AI announcement this year will be the opening of Apple's Foundation Models to third-party developers.
9to5Mac noted that software announcements made last year rolled out slowly and AI upgrades to Siri and Swift Assist never materialized.
Gurman reported that Apple is prioritizing features that it is confident will launch in the fall.
Gurman also reported that Apple appears set to add a centralized gaming app in the next iOS update.
He indicates that the app will be preinstalled with the update and will be a place for users to launch games, find new titles, view leaderboards and communicate with other players.
"The new app will serve as a Game Center replacement, and is more ambitious," Gurman wrote. "But it's unlikely to shake up the industry."
Apple launched Game Center in 2010, but it has since been relegated to a back-end service that is a part of the Settings app.
Apple acquired game developer RAC7 in May, according to Digital Trends.
Apple will be changing its iOS naming system and will announce the shift at WWDC, according to Gurman.
The company will move from numbering operating system updates sequentially to numbering them by year in a manner similar to the way car models are identified.
Under this system Apple appears set to roll out iOS 26, iPadOS 26, tvOS 26, macOS 26, watchOS 26 and visionOS 26. Gurman reported that the iOS will see a major design overhaul along with the name change.
Gurman further reported that the company has settled on Tahoe as the identity for its Mac operating system.
The Cupertino, California-based company themes Mac operating systems around important sites in California. The current operating system is named after the Sequoia National Forest and previous versions have been tied to Yosemite National Park and Big Sur.
The keynote for WWDC 2025 takes place at Apple Park in Cupertino, California on Monday, June 9 at 1 p.m. ET.
It is keynote is set to be streamed on Apple TV, the Apple YouTube page and on apple.com.

Live Updates From Apple WWDC 2025 🔴

On Monday, June 9, Apple will announce an avalanche of software updates for all of its platforms at its annual WWDC 2025 developer conference. We'll see new versions of iOS, iPadOS, macOS, watchOS, visionOS, and tvOS—all of which are rumored to jump straight to version '26.' Apple is expected to introduce all-new visual looks, inspired by the Vision Pro's glassy and translucent visionOS, to unify the interfaces and make them more consistent across devices. For its largest and most important platform—iPhone—that means the first major software facelift since Jony Ive's iOS 7 flattened software in 2013. The elephant in the room is going to be AI—specifically, Apple's brand of artificial intelligence called Apple Intelligence. Will Apple address its big fumbling of its next-gen Siri voice assistant that was supposed to have arrived by now but still hasn't? Or will it downplay its lagging AI features as Google, OpenAI, Anthropic, and other major AI companies drop new and more advanced LLM-powered chatbot and generative features at a seemingly rapid-fire pace? Senior Consumer Tech Editor Raymond Wong will be in Cupertino, Calif. to bring live WWDC 2025 coverage from Apple's spaceship-shaped Apple Park. The Gizmodo consumer tech team, including Senior Writer James and Staff Reporter Kyle Barr, will be on deck breaking down the news announcements, too. Be sure to come back on Monday for live updates!
