Church condemns attack on priests, nuns in Odisha

Time of Indiaa day ago
Kochi: With another attack against Christian clergy in Odisha, various church bodies issued a strong condemnation of attacks against Christians in various parts of the country.
The response followed an alleged attack on priests and nuns in Balasore diocese in Odisha.
Syro-Malabar Church media commission said the latest attack at 5pm on Aug 6 in Gangadhar village of Jaleswar district, Odisha, was carried out alleging religious conversion. Fr Lijo Nirappel and Fr V Jojo from Balasore diocese were injured. The two priests, along with two nuns and a few mission workers, reached the church under Gangadhar Mission to offer a mass for the deceased, the Church added.
After the service, about 70 Bajrang Dal activists blocked their way and brutally assaulted the priests and their assistant, the Church said. "Witnesses said the attackers shouted: 'Remember, Odisha is ruled by BJP. Christians are not needed here and you will not be allowed to operate here.' Although police arrived at the scene, they were unwilling to file a case, showing how sectarian forces control the legal system," said an official statement.
It added the reluctance to act against lawlessness in Chhattisgarh emboldened Sangh organisations to continue their attacks on Christian minority.
Meanwhile, CBCI president Mar Andrews Thazhath said Indian Constitution guaranteed right to freely profess, practice and propagate religion but ordinary people are being attacked for no reason in the name of religious conversion and the anti-conversion bill. "It is happening in different ways in different states.
So, I urge the concerned authorities, state or Centre, to act against such unconstitutional attacks on freedom of religion and rights of minorities," he said.
Fr Philip Kaviyil, global director of Catholic Congress, wrote a letter to Prime Minister demanding action against the attack on nuns, priests and laymen in Odisha by Bajrang Dal members. He said it was both heartbreaking and alarming that such hate-fuelled acts were carried out even in broad daylight, often with impunity.
In a sarcastic Facebook post, metropolitan of Thrissur diocese of Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church Yuhanon Mor Meletius, said "The actor whom we had sent to Delhi from Thrissur Parliament seat is missing. We are concerned whether we should inform police."

Bhubaneswar: Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Saturday distributed Rs 5,000 crore to around one crore women as third instalment under Subhadra scheme. Responding to a request by local MLA Taraprasad Bahinipati (Congress), the Chief Minister said a Vande Bharat train would run from Jeypore to Bhubaneswar.

‘Enactment of law for domestic violence is need of hour'

'Civil society organisations should work for the enactment of a law pertaining exclusively to domestic violence and its punishments,' said A.S. Kumari, Chairperson, Tamil Nadu State Commission for Women. Speaking at the event 'Dalit women speak,' organised by Evidence, a non-governmental organisation, here on Saturday, she said that in the absence of a law, violence against women, especially in houses, committed by men go unnoticed. The law should ensure that the perpetrators be punished based on the severity of the offence they commit, she noted. She advised young women not to be dependent on men but stand on their own by working hard and earning money, Ms. Kumari said. 'Despite several efforts, violence against women seems to be increasing. I will receive at least four to five calls from women college students every day,' she added. Though violence against women has increased, the calls for help suggested that the awareness had increased. The equal participation of women in local administration, granted by the Indian Constitution, should be utilised properly by not letting men, be it husband, son or relative, interfere in the administration, Ms. Kumari stated. The true empowerment comes when women wielding the power could decide on their own and administer their position, she noted. In a separate session, Gowsalya of Shankar Social Justice Foundation and a victim of the caste killing said that as a woman survivor of a horrific incident, she struggled to move on from that. Speaking about the recent caste killing of a youth in Tirunelveli, she said that the girl whose brother was the accused could find it hard to manage the pressure from the surroundings and family. 'The society will try hard to kill the relationship the girl was in and she could be manipulated and it will take a lot to handle it,' she added. To a question on how she moved on from the loss of her partner and how she managed the situation, Ms. Gowsalya noted that she did not fall for the emotionally overwhelming situation, instead, she was politicised through her surroundings. 'The politicisation helped me keep away from the political pressure that surrounded me. If not for the political knowledge, I might have handled the situation emotionally,' she added. Arulmozhi, whose Dalit husband was killed by caste Hindu members for promoting inter-caste marriage and voicing out against injustices, said that women, whatever they faced, should be ready to come out and voice out against similar offences against women. 'Until you are vocal about the problems you could not survive in society. I was determined after my husband's murder that I should live in the same village amidst the offenders who were responsible for the murder of my husband,' she added. Kathir, founder of Evidence, said that women, though stronger in several aspects, were made victims in the patriarchal society. Dalit women, by overcoming the hardships, refuse to get succumbed to the violence and the patriarchal mindset, he added. The trait, observed mostly in Dalit women, makes them outpower men and even the society in fighting their odds and winning over their ambitions, Mr. Kathir stated.

Grace of krishna will lead us and take the country forward: Nirmala Sitharaman

Union Minister for Finance Nirmala Sitharaman called upon the citizens to pray before the god for prosperity of the country. Speaking at the inauguration of the newly constructed 'Yali' (Sutthupouli), a traditional wood carving around Sri Krishna Mutt on Saturday, Ms. Sitharaman said she has come to the temple of Lord Krishna whose grace has been immense on her. She was overwhelmed to be part of the function, which was spiritually enhancing. Ms. Sitharaman said she was in the temple on the day of Raksha Bandhan. 'I want Krishna's grace for India and our Prime Minister Narendra Modi. For the biggest of challenges, it is the prayers of gurus and grace of god that matter. Grace of Lord Krishna will lead us and take us forward. When you pray before the lord, do pray for Mother India. This country should prosper, and all our youngsters should prosper. We (Indians) should unite to serve the country,' she said. Everyone of the Asta Mutts was serving Lord Krishna and worshiping the Lord, advocated by Madhwacharya. The Asta Mutts have continued the culture of serving 'Bala Krishna'. They have also kept up the tradition of 'Anna Brahma' by feeding people. By the grace of Lord Krishna, the kitchen continues to feed people every day. Recalling her visit to the Mutt with her parents in 2005 during the paryaya of Admar Mutt Vishwapriya Tirtha, Ms. Sitharaman said the visit came at a time when she was going through some personal difficulties. The seer has blessed her several times, and the seer's prayer has made a lot of difference in her life. She hailed the initiative of Paryaya Puthige Mutt seer Sugunendra Tirtha to collect one crore handwritten Bhagavad Gitas as part of 'Koti Gita Lekhana Yajna' and his work of spreading Lord Krishna's message in Bhagawad Gita across the world. Infosys Foundation chairperson Sudha Murty was honoured with the Shri Krishna Geethanugraha award for her contributions to literature and philanthropy. Retired Chief Justice of Karnataka High Court Dinesh Kumar was present on the occasion.
