More than 20 arrests at protest in support of Palestine Action after UK ban comes into effect - War on Gaza

Al-Ahram Weekly13 hours ago
More than 20 people were arrested Saturday after protesters gathered in central London in support of Palestine Action.
The protest in Parliament Square came hours after the pro-Palestinian activist group was banned in Britain under anti-terrorism laws.
The group lost a last-minute court battle late Friday seeking to block the British government's ban, which came into effect at midnight.
Activists and their supporters have said the group is non-violent and advocates civil disobedience, and condemned the government decision as authoritarian.
A small group of protesters stood beneath a statue of Mahatma Gandhi and held placards reading, 'I oppose genocide. I support Palestine Action.'
Police surrounded them and several people were taken away. One woman seen lying on the ground in handcuffs was carried by officers to a police van.
'Palestine Action is a proscribed group, and officers will act where criminal offences are committed,' the Metropolitan Police said in a statement.
The designation as a proscribed group under the Terrorism Act 2000 means that membership of the group and support of its actions a criminal offense punishable by up to 14 years in prison.
Some 81 organizations are already proscribed under the UK act, including Hamas and al-Qaida.
The government moved to ban Palestine Action after activists broke into a Royal Air Force base in Brize Norton in Oxfordshire, England, on June 20, damaging two planes using red paint and crowbars in protest at the British government's ongoing military support for Israel in its war on Gaza.
Police said that the incident caused around 7 million pounds' ($9.4 million) worth of damage.
Four people between 22 and 35 years old were charged Thursday with conspiracy to commit criminal damage and conspiracy to enter a prohibited place for purposes prejudicial to the interests of the U.K.
No pleas were entered at Westminster Magistrates' Court in central London and the four are scheduled to appear on July 18 at the Central Criminal Court.

82 Palestinians Killed in Israeli Airstrikes on Gaza in 24 Hours

H-Tayea At least 82 Palestinians were killed in Israeli airstrikes across the Gaza Strip since dawn today, according to medical sources in Gaza hospitals, as intense bombardment continues throughout the besieged territory. The strikes come amid renewed diplomatic efforts to broker a ceasefire. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced on Sunday that he had dispatched a delegation for negotiations as part of ongoing mediation efforts concerning Gaza. Speaking to The Jerusalem Post, Netanyahu said, "I have sent a delegation for negotiations, and we are committed to returning the hostages and ensuring security. We can achieve this objective." He emphasized that the Israeli negotiators had received clear instructions to finalize an agreement under terms previously accepted by Israel. Netanyahu's comments come as international pressure mounts for a ceasefire deal to halt the escalating violence in Gaza, where the humanitarian situation remains dire. read more Gold prices rise, 21 Karat at EGP 3685 NATO's Role in Israeli-Palestinian Conflict US Expresses 'Strong Opposition' to New Turkish Military Operation in Syria Shoukry Meets Director-General of FAO Lavrov: confrontation bet. nuclear powers must be avoided News Iran Summons French Ambassador over Foreign Minister Remarks News Aboul Gheit Condemns Israeli Escalation in West Bank News Greek PM: Athens Plays Key Role in Improving Energy Security in Region News One Person Injured in Explosion at Ukrainian Embassy in Madrid News Israeli-Linked Hadassah Clinic in Moscow Treats Wounded Iranian IRGC Fighters News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier Sports Former Al Zamalek Player Ibrahim Shika Passes away after Long Battle with Cancer Videos & Features Tragedy Overshadows MC Alger Championship Celebration: One Fan Dead, 11 Injured After Stadium Fall Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt Business Fear & Greed Index Plummets to Lowest Level Ever Recorded amid Global Trade War News Flights suspended at Port Sudan Airport after Drone Attacks News "Tensions Escalate: Iran Probes Allegations of Indian Tech Collaboration with Israeli Intelligence" Videos & Features Video: Trending Lifestyle TikToker Valeria Márquez Shot Dead during Live Stream Technology 50-Year Soviet Spacecraft 'Kosmos 482' Crashes into Indian Ocean

Egypt's PM Rejects Gaza Displacement Plans at BRICS Summit

H-Tayea Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly firmly rejected any proposals to forcibly displace or relocate Palestinians from Gaza, stressing Egypt's unwavering stance on preserving Palestinian rights and territorial integrity. Speaking on behalf of President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi at the opening session of the BRICS summit in Rio de Janeiro, Madbouly addressed world leaders, highlighting the severe crises confronting the international community—including geopolitical tensions, economic instability, debt crises, climate change, and the ongoing humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza. Madbouly described the Israeli military campaign in Gaza, ongoing for nearly two years, as the gravest crisis of the present time, citing the deaths of more than 55,000 Palestinians, two-thirds of whom were women and children, along with approximately 125,000 injured. He condemned Israel's violations of international law and humanitarian principles, not only in Gaza but also in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, including continued settlement activities on occupied Palestinian land. The Prime Minister noted Egypt's joint mediation efforts with Qatar and the United States that led to a ceasefire agreement on January 15. However, he said Israeli attacks on civilians violated that truce. Madbouly called for an immediate restoration of the ceasefire and urged Israel to halt all military actions and comply with international humanitarian law to protect civilians. He categorically rejected any plans aimed at displacing Gaza's population, warning that such proposals threaten not only the prospect of a two-state solution but also broader regional peace. read more Gold prices rise, 21 Karat at EGP 3685 NATO's Role in Israeli-Palestinian Conflict US Expresses 'Strong Opposition' to New Turkish Military Operation in Syria Shoukry Meets Director-General of FAO Lavrov: confrontation bet. nuclear powers must be avoided News Iran Summons French Ambassador over Foreign Minister Remarks News Aboul Gheit Condemns Israeli Escalation in West Bank News Greek PM: Athens Plays Key Role in Improving Energy Security in Region News One Person Injured in Explosion at Ukrainian Embassy in Madrid News Israeli-Linked Hadassah Clinic in Moscow Treats Wounded Iranian IRGC Fighters News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier Sports Former Al Zamalek Player Ibrahim Shika Passes away after Long Battle with Cancer Videos & Features Tragedy Overshadows MC Alger Championship Celebration: One Fan Dead, 11 Injured After Stadium Fall Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt Business Fear & Greed Index Plummets to Lowest Level Ever Recorded amid Global Trade War News Flights suspended at Port Sudan Airport after Drone Attacks News "Tensions Escalate: Iran Probes Allegations of Indian Tech Collaboration with Israeli Intelligence" Videos & Features Video: Trending Lifestyle TikToker Valeria Márquez Shot Dead during Live Stream Technology 50-Year Soviet Spacecraft 'Kosmos 482' Crashes into Indian Ocean
