Synopsis
Kris Srikkanth has ignited IPL speculation by suggesting Sanju Samson as the ideal successor to MS Dhoni at Chennai Super Kings, citing Samson's exceptional talent and popularity in Tamil Nadu. While acknowledging Ruturaj Gaikwad as another captaincy option, Srikkanth believes Samson's strong brand presence makes him a valuable asset for CSK.
Agencies MS Dhoni (left) and Sanju Samson Former India opener Kris Srikkanth has fuelled the IPL rumour mill by naming Rajasthan Royals skipper Sanju Samson as the perfect successor to MS Dhoni at Chennai Super Kings — and he has a clear reason why.Speaking on his YouTube channel on Saturday, Srikkanth said Samson's 'brilliant' skills and strong brand presence in Tamil Nadu made him an obvious choice should he leave Rajasthan.'Sanju is a brilliant player and he is very popular in Chennai. He has got a good brand image in Chennai. I will be the first one to pick him for Chennai if he is willing to leave and comes this side,' Srikkanth remarked, responding to media reports linking Samson with a possible move.
The 64-year-old, however, acknowledged that CSK already have a captaincy option in Ruturaj Gaikwad, who briefly led the team last season before Dhoni returned due to Gaikwad's injury. 'He is the right replacement for MS Dhoni. Dhoni can maximum play this season, maybe not the year after and then you can have a smooth transition. But I feel if Ruturaj Gaikwad has been given the captaincy, he should be continued with,' Srikkanth said.
Dhoni, 44, is widely expected to be nearing the end of his IPL career. Last season, CSK endured a tough campaign, finishing bottom of the table with just four wins. Used mainly as a finisher, Dhoni scored 196 runs at a strike rate above 135.Addressing reports of a possible rift between Samson and Royals' head coach Rahul Dravid, Srikkanth said the franchise had built their side around the Kerala-born wicketkeeper-batter.'I would not let go of Sanju Samson. If they want to promote Riyan Parag as captain, that is their choice. I would still play Samson as a batter. He has been paid Rs 18 crore,' he noted.Samson, who joined RR in 2013, has scored 4,027 IPL runs, including two centuries. Despite injuries last season, he averaged 35.63 in nine matches.

Thiruvananthapuram likely to step in for Bengaluru at Women's World Cup

Kochi: Bengaluru's loss could now become Thiruvananthapuram's gain, with the Greenfield Stadium in Kariavattom likely to host some matches in the upcoming Women's World Cup, scheduled from Sept 30 to Nov 2. Kerala Cricket Association (KCA) president K Jayesh confirmed that discussions are ongoing with the International Cricket Council (ICC) regarding this. He said ICC chairman Jay Shah asked him in Mumbai on Monday if they could take over as the host. "We assured him that Thiruvananthapuram is ready to host the Women's World Cup matches. We have the necessary infrastructure," he said. The M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru was awarded four matches — including the final, provided Pakistan did not qualify — when the ICC announced the official tournament itinerary. However, the plans came unstuck after the deadly stampede outside the stadium on June 4, during the Royal Challengers Bangalore's IPL victory celebrations, claimed 11 lives. In the aftermath, the Karnataka govt reportedly withdrew permission to host any match at the venue. The decision followed the findings of a govt-commissioned probe led by Justice John Michael D'Cunha, which declared the stadium "fundamentally unsafe" for large-scale events, citing design flaws, poor crowd management infrastructure, limited entry and exit points, inadequate public transport access and insufficient parking. The fallout has already affected other events. The Chinnaswamy Stadium was recently denied permission to host the KSCA Maharaja T20 Trophy, which has now been shifted to Mysuru's Srikantadatta Narasimha Raja Wadeyar ground. While an official confirmation from the ICC is still pending, the KCA remains optimistic. "It's not yet confirmed how many matches we will host. We are waiting for the ICC's nod and several logistical challenges still need to be addressed," Jayesh said. Thiruvananthapuram's Greenfield Stadium, the only international-standard cricket venue in Kerala, last hosted an international match during the India vs Sri Lanka ODI in 2023. It is now poised to save the marquee women's cricket tournament from organisational chaos. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). When MS Dhoni Lost His Cool On Ambati Rayudu - Untold Story About CSK Legend Revealed

Former Indian cricket team batter Ambati Rayudu revealed an incident where 'Captain Cool' MS Dhoni lost his patience and gave him an ultimatum. The incident took place during Indian Premier League (IPL) 2019 when Dhoni was left irritated by Ratudu's temper during a match. Dhoni sternly told Rayudu to control his anger and focus on the game. 'Sometimes, Mahi bhai would tell me — just like a tin roof heats up quickly, I also tend to lose my cool quickly," he said on JioHotstar show 'Cheeky Singles.' This was the not only time that Rayudu received warnings from Dhoni as the former India star revealed that his temper often got him into trouble. 'Just focus on batting, don't raise your hand. I don't want to lose Fair Play points because of you'," Rayudu added when asked about the incidents. Rayudu, however, did not miss the opportunity to poke fun at the CSK legend as he pointed out that it was the same year that Dhoni was fined after entering the field following a controversial decision. During the match between Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals, Dhoni was left fuming over a controversial no-ball decision and he entered the field to challenge the call. The gesture led to Dhoni being fined 50 per cent of match fees. "Interestingly, that same year, he himself walked onto the field — not because of me, but because we were losing,' Rayudu said. Meanwhile, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) veteran spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has asked CSK for clarity on how they intend to use him in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026, as per ESPNcricinfo. According to ESPNcricinfo, Ashwin has told the franchise he doesn't mind parting ways with them if he doesn't fit their plans. Ashwin was picked by CSK at the mega auction 2025 for Rs 9.75 crore. He played nine fixtures for Chennai Super Kings in IPL 2025, taking seven wickets and conceding runs at an economy rate of 9.13. This IPL was also his costliest year as he went for 9.12 runs an over, the first time that his economy went past 8.49. The deadline for releasing players usually depends on when the auction takes place, which hasn't been finalised for IPL 2026 yet. Although there is a mini auction every year, the mega auction happens only once every three years. Anytime between November and February is when it is typically held. As Ashwin jokingly stated during his interview with Sanju Samson, a player trade can occur no more than a week prior to the auction. Ashwin is the fifth-highest wicket-taker in the IPL with 201 scalps in 239 matches at an average of 30.94. Before rejoining CSK in 2025, he played for the now-defunct Rising Pune Supergiant, Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings), Delhi Capitals, and Rajasthan Royals.
