This "American Mind Can't Comprehend" Tweet Spiraled Completely, Totally Out Of Control

Yahoo20-07-2025
Let's talk about those "European mind can't comprehend" and "American mind can't comprehend" tweets we've been posting for literal years now.
They're about the size of our sodas.
They're about our wild temperature changes.
And there's a ton about our beloved PB&J sandwiches <3<3
Welllllll, a new one kind of spiraled out of control.
It all started with @EdisonCarterN23 posting a picture of a tiny Fiat with the caption: "The American mind can't comprehend that 80% of car trips could be taken in a car like this."
Then @FetusberryJam clapped back with: "the european mind cannot comprehend driving four hours and still being in the same state."
That's when people from around the world got involved.
This Canadian posted that you can drive for 23 hours in the province of Ontario:
This Australian pointed out that you can drive for 29 hours without leaving the same state:
This person pointed out you can drive for days and still be in Norway:
Another person said you drive for 16 hours in Finland:
Another from Australia:
We have New Zealand clocking in at just over a day:
2 days for India:
2 hours to cross continets from Europe to Africa:
It's almost 8 hours for Portugal:
20 hours in Sweden!
Over two days for Chile:
And here's one of the Roman Empire:
Then, there are the jokes:
"You can fly 16.5hrs in France and still be in France. The American mind cannot comprehend this," one person said.
"Dude, you can drive 4 hours and still be stuck in London," another person said.
And we have: "You can drive for 5 years in Scotland and still hit the same potholes."
Lastly, it wouldn't be one of these posts without a bit of light American shade: "The American mind cannot comprehend not needing a car to do literally fucking anything."
"American mind cannot comprehend fuel efficiency, safety, and making their cars not the size of a small house," another person chimed in.
And laaastly: "'The european mind cannot comprehend-' i don't want to. i never want to comprehend anything american. thank god i was born in europe."

US tariffs dent VW Group operating profit in H1 2025

Volkswagen Group faced a 33% decline (over H1 2024) in its operating profit to €6.7bn ($7.88bn) for the first half (H1) of 2025. This downturn is largely attributed to the impact of increased US import tariffs, which cost the company €1.3bn ($1.52bn), alongside restructuring provisions and CO₂ regulatory expenses. The company's operating margin before the tariff and restructuring costs was 5.6%, but the actual operating return on sales for H1 2025 fell to 4.2%. Sales revenue remained stable at €158.3bn ($185.8bn) in H1 2025, closely matching the previous year's figures. But the automotive division saw a negative net cash flow of €1.4bn, in contrast to the previous year's positive €0.4bn. The decline was driven by merger and acquisition expenditures, including €0.9bn for additional Rivian shares, restructuring payments, and US tariff costs. Vehicle sales for the H1 2025 saw a slight increase to 4.36 million units compared to the previous year same period, with growth in Western Europe, South America, Central and Eastern Europe offsetting declines in China and North America. The latter was significantly impacted by tariffs, leading to a 16% decrease in sales. The Core brand group has made strides in cost efficiency, achieving a 4.8% operating margin in the H1. Looking ahead, Volkswagen Group has adjusted its 2025 outlook, now anticipating sales revenue to remain consistent with the prior year and projecting an operating return on sales between 4.0 and 5.0%. The investment ratio in the automotive division is expected to be between 12 and 13%, with automotive net cash flow ranging from €1bn to €3bn. Net liquidity is forecasted to be between €31bn and €33bn. Uncertainties surrounding US import tariffs, currently at 27.5%, pose potential risks for H2 of 2025. The company's forecasts consider both the continuation of these tariffs and a possible reduction to 10% (which may follow a pending US-EU trade deal). Volkswagen Group anticipates challenges from political uncertainty, trade restrictions, competitive pressures, market volatility, and stringent emissions regulations. Volkswagen Group COO and CFO Arno Antlitz said: 'Our half-year figures present a contrasting picture: on the one hand, we achieved strong product success and made progress in realigning the company. On the other, the operating result declined by a third year-on-year – also due to higher sales of lower-margin all-electric models. "In addition, increased US import tariffs and restructuring measures had a negative impact. Excluding these items, the operating margin in the second quarter is at nearly seven percent, representing the upper end of our expectations.' Earlier in the month, Volkswagen Group reported a 1.2% increase in global sales for the second quarter (Q2) 2025, ending 30 June, despite ongoing tariff concerns. VELA Hotels and Mews partner to enhance operations and guest experience

German hospitality company VELA Hotels has transitioned to Mews, a hospitality cloud solutions provider, to manage its collection of coastal properties. The shift from a traditional on-site property management system (PMS) to Mews enables VELA to leverage a cloud-based infrastructure that facilitates automation, self-service capabilities, and integration with various third-party services, said VELA. Each of the three VELA apartment-style properties now employs Mews Terminals for integrated payment processing within their dining establishments and uses single sign-on technology to optimise staff access. VELA Hotels revenue director Vitaliy Uralov said: 'Our goal with VELA has always been to create places where guests feel truly at ease. That starts with operations that work seamlessly behind the scenes. 'Mews allows us to automate and digitise our workflows, giving our team more time to focus on the guest experience and less on admin. That's the kind of change that supports our entire brand ethos.' With the successful implementation of Mews across its existing locations, VELA Hotels is preparing for future growth. The brand anticipates the introduction of a new property in early 2026 that will feature a fully automated self-check-in process, eliminating the conventional reception desk in favour of a communal welcoming area. Uralov added: 'Mews gives us the flexibility to test and adopt new tools fast, without long delays or expensive connection fees. 'It's empowering our teams to modernise, re-think long-standing processes and deliver a smoother experience for our guests.' Earlier this month, Mews enhanced its Digital Key technology by integrating with Salto's advanced locking system, enabling hotel operators to offer guests a contactless experience through Salto's access control system.
