Club World Cup exit as painful as Champions League elimination

Club World Cup exit as painful as Champions League elimination

Yahoo11 hours ago
Bernardo Silva is refusing to look at Manchester City's shock exit from the Club World Cup as a blessing in disguise.
The Premier League outfit crashed out of the competition in the early hours of Tuesday morning as they were beaten 4-3 in extra time by Saudi outfit Al-Hilal after a pulsating last-16 clash in Orlando.

City had established themselves as one of the favourites to triumph in the United States after winning all three of their group games in convincing fashion.
A run to the final would have prolonged their campaign until July 13, however, just five weeks before the next Premier League season begins.
After much debate about the impact of the Club World Cup on player welfare, there is a feeling in some quarters that City – after an underwhelming 2024-25 season – need the rest, but Silva does not see it that way.
The City captain said: 'No-one wanted to lose. We are very used to not having holidays, unfortunately, because the schedule is crazy and when we are in a competition we take it very seriously.

'We had a lot of ambition for this Club World Cup and we wanted to win it.'
Asked if the defeat hurt as much as Champions League elimination, Silva said: 'Yes, a little bit. Yes.'
City had taken early control with a ninth-minute goal from Silva at the Camping World Stadium, but they were to rue missing a succession of chances to increase the lead before the break.
Al-Hilal turned the game around through Marcos Leonardo and Malcom and reclaimed the advantage again with a Kalidou Koulibaly header after Erling Haaland forced extra time.
Phil Foden made it 3-3, but City could not regain the initiative and Leonardo settled an eventful contest – and secured a statement victory for Saudi football – with 112 minutes on the clock.

Silva said: 'There was always a feeling of danger coming from them when they recovered the ball in transition and their counters. We allowed them to run way too many times.
'But apart from that we had chances. We scored three goals and we could have scored five or six.
'They punished us. They have a good team with a lot of individual quality and congratulations to them.'
Former Wolves midfielder Ruben Neves impressed in the Al-Hilal midfield and fellow Portuguese Joao Cancelo was a threat against his old City team-mates.
Silva, also a Portugal international, said: 'I have friends there, I know most of their players and I know the quality they have.

'We were expecting another difficult game like Juventus and when you don't control transitions then good players, like Al-Hilal have, punish you. That's what happened.'
City begin the new Premier League season at Wolves on August 16.
Silva said: 'We will try to have as much rest as possible but also come back to prepare for the season properly.'

Sundhage anticipates 'fantastic future' for women's soccer in Switzerland on eve of Euro 2025

BASEL, Switzerland (AP) — Switzerland coach Pia Sundhage says the country has a 'fantastic future' in women's soccer thanks to several young players hoping to make their mark at the European Championship. The 18-year-old Barcelona forward Sydney Schertenleib is arguably the best known, but there are others as well. Fellow forward Iman Beney was signed by Manchester City last month, and midfielder Noemi Ivelj's performances for Zurich Grasshoppers prompted Eintracht Frankfurt to sign her for the Bundesliga. Both players are only 18. Forward Leila Wandeler, 19, was a surprise call-up by Sundhage after making her breakthrough at Lyon last season. 'Switzerland has a fantastic future,' Sundhage said Tuesday on the eve of the team's Euro 2025 opener against Norway. 'If you look at those players … the future is really great. Now we're just in the mix, so the younger players probably lean a little bit to the experienced players. Both the young players and the most experienced players are important to make that winning mix sauce.' Swedish coach Sundhage, now 65, can herself draw on a wealth of experience to get the best from both sets of players as Switzerland looks for just its second tournament win. Switzerland defeated Iceland 2-1 at Euro 2017 and otherwise drew two games and lost three in its previous appearances. Asked why, after successful stints in charge of the United States and Sweden, she decided to take charge of a 'smaller team' when she took the Switzerland job last year, Sundhage replied it was because of the thrill of preparing the team for Euro 2025. 'Playing the European Championship is something special,' she said. 'It's so much more than a football game. Because everything we've done and the federation have done up to now, using fantastic role models, it's a part of the women's football. And we haven't even played a game yet.' ___ AP soccer:

Berlusconi family sells Monza to U.S.-based fund Beckett Layne Ventures

The family of the late Italian prime minister Silvio Berlusconi has agreed to sell soccer club AC Monza to U.S.-based investment firm Beckett Layne Ventures (BLV). A statement on Tuesday confirmed 80 per cent of the club's shares will be transferred to BLV this summer, with the remaining 20 per cent to be processed by June 2026. Advertisement The sale of Monza marks the withdrawal from soccer of the family of Berlusconi, the four-time Italian prime minister and media tycoon who previously spent three decades as the president of AC Milan. The move also marks the first time BLV, which has invested over $10billion to date in the media and entertainment sectors, have invested in soccer. Headquartered in the U.S., BLV was founded and is managed by Brandon Berger and Lauren Crampsie, both of whom were involved in restructuring Chelsea's commercial department with their background in media and marketing. BLV believe Monza, the home of Formula 1's Italian Grand Prix, is located in a strategically important region of Italy, less than 30km north of Milan. In September 2018, the Fininvest holding company — headed by former Milan club president Berlusconi — bought Monza, with Berlusconi bringing Monza-born Adriano Galliani, former CEO of Milan, also became part of the board of directors. Berlusconi and Galliani had overseen the most successful leadership in Milan's history, winning 29 trophies with the club between 1986 and 2016, including eight Serie A titles and five Champions League trophies. Their stewardship oversaw Monza's first ever promotion to Serie A, the top division of Italian football, in 2022 — starting a run of three successive seasons in the top flight, which ended last season. Monza will compete in next season's Serie B after finishing bottom of Serie A last season, with just three victories in 38 league matches. They are the latest Italian club to move to U.S. ownership, with Milan, Inter, Roma, Fiorentina, Atalanta, Parma and Hellas Verona among those with American majority owners. After selling AC Milan in 2017, Silvio Berlusconi downsized and bought nearby Monza, the hometown club of his right-hand man Adriano Galliani. It was a retirement project for both and they were able to take Monza from Italy's third tier all the way up to the top flight. Berlusconi's death in June 2023 spelled time, however, for this particular indulgence. The rest of the family is passionate about football but never to the same extent as Berlusconi and Galliani. Monza have been up for sale ever since, and the takeover by Beckett Layne Ventures marks the end of an era. Few people have changed football like Berlusconi. ()
