Steven Adams second for NBA's teammate of the year award

1News29-04-2025
Kiwi Steven Adams has been narrowly beaten by Stephen Curry for the NBA's Teammate of the Year award.
Houston Rockets centre Adams, currently involved in the first-round playoffs against the Golden State Warriors, for whom Curry plays, finished on 1237 points to Curry's 1257.
Each year, the Twyman-Stokes teammate award recognises the player deemed to be the best teammate — based on selfless play; leadership as a mentor and role model to other NBA players; and commitment to his team.
Current NBA players selected the winner from a list of 12 finalists.
Adams received 46 first-place votes to Curry's 66.
Adams is known for his on-court commitment and off-court humour and is a free agent at the end of this season but may be picked up again by the Rockets, where he is clearly popular.
He is also effective, as evidenced by leading the 2024-25 Rockets in net rating differential.
The other finalists for the award were Nicolas Batum of the Los Angeles Clippers; Jalen Brunson of the New York Knicks; Tobias Harris of the Detroit Pistons; Al Horford of the Boston Celtics; Jaren Jackson Jr. of the Memphis Grizzlies; James Johnson of the Indiana Pacers; DeAndre Jordan of the Denver Nuggets; Brook Lopez of the Milwaukee Bucks; Donovan Mitchell of the Cleveland Cavaliers; and Jaylin Williams of the Oklahoma City Thunder.
The Warriors currently lead the Rockets 2-1 in the best of seven series. Game four will tip off in San Francisco this afternoon.

On The Up: NBA player Steven Adams hosts first Rotorua training camp

The 2.11m (6ft 11in) basketballer grew up on the east side of Rotorua and attended Ōwhata Primary School, Mokoia Intermediate and Rotorua Lakes High schools. For Newton, the camp was extra special after her under-12 girls Rotorua basketball team won a competition to attend. During the break, Adams surprised the 12 girls on the team with new basketball shoes. Steven Adams surprised the under-12 Rotorua girls' team with new basketball shoes. The camps saw two sessions of more than 250 children spend two hours on the courts with Adams. He mingled among the rotations of drills giving a mix of encouragement and lippy competitive cheek to the children. In true Adams humour, he'd allow them to make a break before blocking the ball at the last minute then jokingly yelling 'in your face'. Steven Adams goes for the block. For others, he'd sneak up behind them and bat the ball out of their hands. One 12-year-old spoken to by the Rotorua Daily Post described Adams as 'crack up'. 'I'm going to get him next time though and cross him (with the ball).' Steven Adams at his basketball camp in Rotorua. Photo / Supplied Rotorua Basketball Association operations manager Sue Pene said this was the first time Adams had brought the camp to his hometown. 'It's a great opportunity for our kids to have Steven here and this is the 10th anniversary of his camps.' She said the camps provided the children with aspirations to one day be like Adams. 'These camps are for the kids to do the best they can and work hard and hopefully they will achieve their goals and dreams.' There have been 24 camps held from Invercargill to Whangārei, with 10,000 children taking part and giveaways of 11,500 singlets and shirts and 12,500 basketballs. Adams, 32, made his NBA debut in 2013 and, according to reported records, had made $264 million before this latest signing with the Houston Rockets for $65m. Photo: Candice Ward The New Zealand Breakers have completed their roster for the NBL26 season by signing 2.08m tall American forward Rob Baker II as the team's final import player. Baker's professional career has seen him play in various leagues, including the Slovak Basketball League, Japan's B League, and in the NBA G League. This year he played with the German EuroLeague Club ALBA Berlin and made the Indiana Pacers roster for the 2025 NBA Summer League, where he scored 26 points with 10 rebounds in a game against the New Orleans Pelicans. Breakers president of basketball operations Dillon Boucher said Baker was a versatile forward who at 6ft 10in would bring a strong presence to the team. "His experience and talent will be a huge asset to our squad. His recent performances have shown he is a dynamic player, and we believe he will be an excellent fit for our team culture," Boucher said. Club Chairman Marc Mitchell said Baker was a dynamic, versatile forward who could make a big impact on both ends of the court. "His strong presence as a solid rebounder and shot-blocker is the final piece of the puzzle that Dillon and Coach Kop [Petteri Koponen] were looking for in completing our roster," Mitchell said. "He was a standout player at Harvard University, from which he graduated with a degree in economics. We are very impressed with what he brings to the club on and off the court." The signing of Baker finalises the team's three import slots for NBL26, joining Parker Jackson-Cartwright and Izaiah Brockington. Baker will join the team after competing for Team USA in the 2025 FIBA Men's AmeriCup in Nicaragua in late August. The Breakers' pre-season campaign is set to begin in September, with the regular season tipping off at Spark Arena on 19 September. Photo: HARRY HOW / AFP The Los Angeles Lakers have signed five-time NBA All-Star guard Luka Doncic to a three-year, $165 million (NZ$279m) contract extension, securing the long-term future of one of basketball's brightest stars, the team announced on Saturday (local time). "I just signed my extension with the Lakers," Doncic wrote in a social media post. "Excited to keep working to bring championships to LA and make Laker Nation proud. Grateful to the Lakers, my teammates and all the fans who've shown so much love since day one. "This is just the beginning." Lakers president of basketball operations and general manager Rob Pelinka called it a "monumental moment" for the franchise. "Luka Doncic's future is with the Los Angeles Lakers," Pelinka said in a statement. "Luka is one of the game's most transcendent players, and his on-court dominance and passion is without compare." Doncic, 26, was acquired by Los Angeles in a blockbuster trade in February that sent Anthony Davis to the Mavericks in a move that stunned the sports world. Since joining the Lakers, he has averaged 28.2 points, 8.1 rebounds, 7.5 assists and 1.6 steals over 28 games to close the regular season, helping lift the Lakers to the third seed in the Western Conference. The Slovenian guard, who was the third overall pick in the 2018 NBA Draft, boasts career averages of 28.6 points, 8.6 rebounds, and 8.2 assists across seven NBA seasons with the Dallas Mavericks and Lakers. Doncic, who has been selected five times to the All-NBA first team, led the league in scoring during the 2023-24 campaign with 33.9 points per game and recorded a career-high 73 points in a single contest. He ranks third all-time in regular season scoring average and has notched 82 career triple-doubles, fourth among active players. - Reuters
