Lucknow: The Cyber Crime Cell and Gosaiganj police on Sunday arrested four individuals for defrauding a businessman of Rs 29.25 lakh on the pretext of supplying high-yield banana saplings through fake Facebook pages. The arrests followed an intensive 10-day interstate operation led by a joint police team, which tracked the accused to their hideouts in Maharashtra and Karnataka. The accused were running a well-organised racket via social media, posing as directors and sales agents of fictitious bio-plant and nursery companies to scam unsuspecting farmers and agricultural entrepreneurs. The arrested individuals are Baburao Sambhaji Mali (34) of Sangli, Maharashtra, who played a key role in logistics and documentation forgery; Kallayya Pattadamath (32), a resident of Bijapur (Vijayapur), Karnataka, who specialised in online page creation and posing as a plant expert; Mohammad Rafik Ganisab Tamboli (42), also of Bijapur, who oversaw mule account setups and mobile coordination; and Basappa Bhimppa Bandivaddar (38), also from the same place, who managed money laundering and cash withdrawals. The racket came to light when Avadhesh Kumar, a nursery business operator from Kasimpur Biruha, Gosaiganj, responded to a Facebook advertisement posted by a page named Fac Bioplants. The page showcased superior hybrid banana varieties, such as G-9 tissue culture plants, offered at competitive rates with guaranteed home delivery. Impressed by professional-looking content, customer testimonials, and fake ISO and MSME certifications, Kumar contacted the number provided. Over the course of several conversations, he was persuaded to deposit multiple instalments into various bank accounts for the purchase, packaging, and transport of the plants. Over several weeks, Kumar transferred a total of Rs 29.25 lakh — but the promised saplings never arrived. Realising he had been duped, he approached the Gosaiganj police and the Cyber Crime Cell, prompting a formal investigation. Additional DCP (South Zone) Vasanth Kumar said the probe revealed that the scam was orchestrated by a gang of repeat offenders who had met while serving time in jail for previous cyber frauds. Police believe the group may have defrauded dozens of victims across several states, including Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Telangana. Alert from Meta helps UP cops save life of man who consumed poison
Lucknow: A young man's life was saved in Prayagraj on Friday night thanks to swift coordination between Meta and Uttar Pradesh Police. The 33-year-old, who works as a waiter at weddings, posted a distress message on Instagram stating, "I have consumed poison. " Within just 10 minutes of receiving an alert from Meta, police teams reached his house and rushed him to the hospital, ultimately saving his life. According to the official statement, on the night of Aug 2 at 10.59 pm, the Social Media Centre at the DGP Headquarters in Lucknow received an alert email from Meta—Instagram's parent company—regarding a potential suicide attempt by a user from the Puramufti police station area in Prayagraj. The alert contained a message indicating that the individual ingested poison. Taking immediate cognisance, Director General of Police (DGP) Uttar Pradesh, Rajeev Krishna, directed urgent intervention. Based on the phone number shared in the Meta alert, the social media team tracked the user's location and informed the Prayagraj district police. Acting swiftly, SHO of Puramufti police station, Manoj Kumar Singh, along with his team, reached the youth's home within 10 minutes. Upon questioning, the man admitted to consuming rodent poison due to financial stress and depression. He was immediately transported to a hospital in the police vehicle along with his family. Doctors managed to stabilise the youth's condition. Upon regaining consciousness on the morning of Aug 3, he told police that he was struggling to make ends meet as a waiter and fell into deep mental distress. Police personnel provided counselling to the man, who assured authorities that he would not repeat such an act. The family expressed gratitude to the Uttar Pradesh Police for their timely action and coordination with Meta. This life-saving effort is part of an ongoing collaboration between Meta and Uttar Pradesh Police, established in 2022. Under the arrangement, any suicidal posts on Facebook or Instagram are flagged in real-time and reported via email and phone to the police. Mid-air slapgate: Cachar youth returns home, family slams airline for ‘negligence'
Silchar: Hoosain Ahmed Mazumdar, the 39-year-old from Assam's Katigorah, who was allegedly assaulted mid-air on an IndiGo flight from Mumbai to Kolkata, finally returned home on Sunday morning, after a 48-hour ordeal, with his family members accusing the airline and authorities of severe 'negligence' in communication, leaving them in distress over his whereabouts. Hoosain was located by his cousin Dilwar at Barpeta Road station on Saturday evening, after he had boarded a train for Assam from Kolkata. His uncle, Jubaidul Islam Mazumadar, said, "We were in a state of shock. I had posted on Facebook that my nephew was missing after the flight incident. On Friday night, someone responded, saying the boy in the photo was sitting next to him." Jubaidul further said the man had helped the youth board a train, which was heading towards Tripura or Badarpur, before helping him get off at Barpeta Road station. "I managed to locate him on Saturday evening. He was sitting next to another person and was disoriented. I brought him home and we reached Katigorah around 7 am on Sunday," Dilwar said. Hoosain, who works as a cleaner at a gym in Mumbai, was flying home on a 2 am flight on Friday, when he was assaulted by a co-passenger. Recounting the traumatic experience, he said, "I was very scared on the flight. My body was shivering, so I asked the man's name who was sitting next to me. He said his name was Hafiz Uddin (Hafizur Rahman), and I gave him salam. But suddenly, without any reason, he slapped me 3–4 times." Hoosain said the cabin crew intervened and offered him water, before attempting to calm him down, adding that he had not misbehaved with his assaulter. Once the flight landed in Kolkata, both, Hoosain and Hafizur, were taken to Bidhannagar police station for questioning. While Hoosain was sent for a medical check-up, he missed his connecting flight to Silchar in the ensuing chaos. Meanwhile, Hoosain's family has strongly criticized IndiGo, stating that the airline failed to arrange a connecting flight or provide updates on his condition. "He was handed over to police, but after that the airline completely washed its hands off the matter. Neither did they inform us, nor did they help him travel further," a family member said. IndiGo, on its part, has officially declared the assaulter an "unruly" passenger and has also barred him from flying with the airline for a period of 30 days, pending an inquiry.
