CIC tells officers to promptly respond to RTI queries
RTI Commissioners Desham Bhupal, B Ayodhya Reddy, PV Srinivas Rao, Mohsin Parveen, Merla Vaishnavi visited Medak district and held a meeting with officials on Tuesday.
State Chief Information Commissioner Chandrasekhar Reddy said that the RTI Act was implemented with the aim of ensuring that the public information officers should have complete understanding of the act, implementation of government schemes, utilization of funds and eradication of corruption.
He said that the public information officers should develop a comprehensive understanding by reading the sections and subsections thoroughly. It is commendable that there are no cases in 15 of the 29 government departments in the state. 18,000 cases were pending with the Right to Information Act Commission in the state due to the fact that the information was not made available to the public in the last ten years. He said that people should provide information within 30 days of applying for information and that citizen charter boards should be set up at every government office. RTI Act applications should not be rejected without giving reasonable reasons. Since the Right to Information Act is available, everyone should take responsibility and provide information to the public as soon as possible, Reddy said.
The RTI Chief Commissioner said that the Commission will resolve all pending cases in August and move forward with new applications. Steps have been taken to completely resolve the cases of 30 departments in two months and there should be zero cases. He said that 11 districts have been selected and awareness among the public information officers through the Right to Information Act has been raised and that the sections of the act are being explained in full. He said that they should come forward to provide information to everyone. He said that 17 departments out of 22 districts will show solutions to all the cases by next March and provide information. He said that the awareness conference will be very useful in bringing the hidden system forward with new enthusiasm and increasing accountability to the people.

‘Checking proves it again': No EVM tampering in Maharashtra polls; Election Commission reaffirms after verification drive
Representative image NEW DELHI: The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Thursday reiterated that Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) are 'tamper-proof' and 'checking proves it again', following a comprehensive verification exercise in Maharashtra. The checking and verification (C&V) process, which covered 10 assembly constituencies based on applications from 10 candidates, confirmed there was no mismatch in vote count between the EVM results and VVPAT slips. In all cases, the machines, ballot units, control units, and VVPATs, passed diagnostic tests, the Commission said in a statement on Monday. The exercise was conducted under instructions issued on June 17 and carried out by the chief electoral officer of Maharashtra. Eight out of the ten applicants, all of whom had lost in the 2024 state elections, were present for the verification. C&V was conducted on 48 Ballot Units, 31 Control Units and 31 VVPATs. In addition, other contesting candidates or their representatives attended the sessions, according to the Commission. Two applicants chose not to participate. Authorised engineers from the manufacturer ECIL (Electronics Corporation of India Limited) conducted the verification. The process involved diagnostic tests to check for tampering and, where requested, mock polls to cross-verify EVM results with VVPAT slips. In all such cases, no discrepancies were found. In constituencies such as 147-Kopri-Pachpakhadi, 148-Thane, 211-Khadakwasla, and 229-Majalagaon, diagnostic tests were conducted on three sets of EVMs each, based on candidate requests. All machines passed and were certified by ECIL engineers. In six other constituencies, 188-Panel, 192-Alibag, 80-Arni, 119-Yevala, 271-Chandgad, 276-Kolhapur North and in three additional sets of EVMs from Majalagaon, both diagnostic tests and mock polls were held. The mock poll results from the Control Units were matched with the VVPAT slip counts, and no mismatches were found. However, the verification process in the Khadakwasla assembly seat, Pune, had faced a hiccup on July 25. NCP (SP) candidate Sachin Dodke, who lost to the BJP's Bhimrao Tapkir, objected to the verification procedure and demanded the counting of actual VVPAT slips. When his request was denied, he halted the process and threatened legal action. Election officer Yashwant Mane clarified that Dodke had requested verification of burnt memory from two centres, which was allowed and completed. 'Since the candidate refused to permit a mock poll (necessary to proceed to VVPAT counting), the process was deemed completed,' Mane was quoted as saying by news agency PTI. The Commission reiterated that all verification processes conducted so far reaffirm the tamper-proof nature of EVMs, with all machines passing the tests and VVPAT counts matching the recorded votes.

Strategic line near chicken's neck to steel corridor, Cabinet clears key rail expansion projects
The Union Cabinet Thursday approved four railway expansion projects including a multitracking project near the strategic Siliguri corridor, another in one of India's highest steel production areas and one that will make up a part of the Delhi-Chennai high-density network These new projects, spanning a cumulative 574 km across 13 districts of six states, are estimated to cost Rs 11,168 crore. They involve the construction of the third and fourth lines between Aluabari Road and New Jalpaiguri (near the so-called chicken's neck), a fourth line between Itarsi and Nagpur which is part of the Delhi-Chennai network, and the third and fourth lines on the Dangoaposi-Jaroli iron and steel belt. The fourth project is the doubling of the railway line between Aurangabad (Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar) and Parbhani. The 297-km line between Itarsi (Madhya Pradesh) and Nagpur (Maharashtra) intersects with Mumbai-Howrah network at Nagpur. Officials said the fourth line will decongest the network and enable faster movement of trains. The construction of the line will be complex as it will have 37 stations, 36 major and 415 minor bridges, two overpasses, 74 underpasses, four tunnels and two rail overbridges. Its total estimated cost is Rs 5,451 crore. The 57-km Aluabari-New Jalpaiguri third and fourth line, which passes through Bihar's Kishanganj and three districts of West Bengal, is of strategic importance as it passes near the only route to enter the North-East from rest of India. It is near the international borders with Bhutan, Bangladesh and Nepal. The project will have 99 bridges, three overpasses and eight underpasses. Officials said the line expansion will help in the movement of 21.6 million additional tons of cargo. The 43-km Dangoaposi-Jaroli project connects Odisha's Kendujhar district with Jharkhand's West Singhbhum district, which is one of the highest steel production areas. A senior official of the Ministry of Railways said that the line expansion will connect iron ores to steel production units and will play a crucial role in meeting the annual steel production target of 300 million tons. The project will cost around Rs 1,752 crore. The 177-km Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar-Parbhani doubling project in Maharashtra will improve connectivity in the Marathwada region and provide an alternative route between Mumbai and Secunderabad. It will also connect the Jalna dry port and goods sheds at Dinagaon and Daulatabad, besides supporting the upcoming Aurangabad Industrial City. Railway officials said the line doubling will facilitate the movement of 14.3 million tons of additional cargo from the region.
