Nagpur: Taxmen have attached
benami assets
worth more than Rs 452 crore in Nagpur region related to 30 cases until the financial year ending March 2025. The action comes under Benami Transactions (Prohibition) Amendment Act 2016 for which a special section has been set up by the department.
The jurisdiction of Nagpur region covers Vidarbha & Marathwada. The majority of the amount attached is cash, with a small portion gold and a single car which was attached recently. "A sizeable amount of the cash was found to be parked in multi-state cooperative societies," said sources. The accounts are opened in the name of unsuspecting persons having little means to get such amounts in their accounts. Recently, a daily wager living in Multai, Madhya Pradesh, made headlines after he was served a tax notice of Rs 314 crore. The tax liability was assessed based on an amount running into hundreds of crores found parked in his account in a cooperative society in Nagpur. The cooperative that operated from a pigeonhole sized office has shut down now.Benami properties are the assets whose ownership cannot be proven by the holders and are held in others' name to avoid detection. Attachment of the assets is the first step. The attachment has to be later adjudicated by a judicial authority. Once adjudicated, the amount is termed to be confiscated and credited to the national exchequer, explained a source.Out of the Rs 452 crore attached by the department in Nagpur region, over Rs 5.38 crore was finally confiscated during the last fiscal. The process continues for the rest of the amount, said sources. Attachment and confiscation is a continuous process. In 2023-24 FY, assets worth Rs 50 crore were confiscated and deposited into govt exchequer as Rs 6 crore of benami properties were attached.Lately, the ITAT upheld move to declare over Rs 45cr of deposits parked in over 500 accounts in Buldhana Urban Cooperative Society as benami.

Woman duped of Rs4.4L in job fraud

Pune: The Wanowrie police are investigating a complaint registered by a 35-year-old woman, wife of a Border Security Force (BSF) constable, on Thursday stating that a conman, under the pretext of helping her secure a job as a clerk at the Pune Cantonment Board (PCB), duped her of Rs 4.38 lakh between Nov 2023 and Nov 2024. Sub inspector Balasaheb Wakade on Friday said the victim is a resident of Vadu Budruk at Shirur. She holds a degree and visited the PCB in search of a job when she came in contact with the conman, he said, adding that the conman lured her by claiming he could help her secure the clerk because he was in the good books of the PCB officials. Wakade stated that the conman induced the victim to pay a total of Rs 7 lakh and assured her that she would soon receive a letter of appointment for the clerk position. She did not receive anything, Wakade said. Later, the woman and her husband, who is a constable with the BSF and posted in Siachen, realized that she was tricked and asked the suspect to repay the money. The suspect eventually repaid Rs 2.68 lakh and sought time to repay Rs 4.38 lakh, but to no avail. He eventually stopped communicating with her, the police officer said. The woman has shared the suspect's cellphone number and photograph. A police team is working on certain clues to arrest him, he added. Kashmir to Kanyakumari no longer just a slogan: LG Sinha

JAMMU: J&K lieutenant governor Manoj Sinha lavished praise on PM Narendra Modi Friday for making the 'Kashmir-to-Kanyakumari slogan' a reality and carrying forward what he said was 'a socio-economic revolution in J&K' since the abrogation of Article 370 in 2019. 'He has connected the hearts of millions of Indians, forging an unbreakable bond from north to south,' Sinha said in Katra after PM Modi inaugurated the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link and flagged off the Valley's first Vande Bharat Express service. The LG said the world's tallest railway bridge, built over the Chenab, and Anji rail bridge were representative of this progress. 'The skills of our engineers to build the Chenab and Anji bridges, and the toil of our workers who carved a rail route through the mountains have eliminated the gaps that existed between India's crown jewel and the rest of the country.' Sinha pointed out that since April 2022, the PM had commissioned or inaugurated Rs 1.15 lakh crore worth of projects for J&K.

Another top Maoist with 45L bounty killed in encounter

Raipur: In yet another big blow to the Left Wing Extremism (LWE), another senior Maoist rank cadre — Bhaskar, who carried Rs 45 lakh bounty — was neutralized on Friday in an encounter that broke out in the same area where Maoists central committee member Sudhakar alias Tentu Lakshmi Narasimha Chalam was gunned down on Thursday in the forests of Bijapur. The encounter was part of the same anti-Maoist operation underway since Wednesday being carried out by personnel from the state police's Special Task Force (STF), District Reserve Guard (DRG) and CoBRA. Intermittent firing between security forces and the Maoist ultras took place the whole day and after the guns fell silent, security forces recovered the body of 45-year-old Maoist Bhaskar, who carried a bounty of Rs 25 lakh in Chhattisgarh and Rs 20 lakh in Telangana. Bhaskar was a Special Zonal Committee member of Telangana State Committee and was reportedly operating in the dense forests of Indravati National Park — a known Maoist stronghold. Three days ago, TOI had reported that security forces in Bastar have precise information on the locations of nine top Maoist commanders in Bastar division, and an operation to eliminate them is imminent unless they surrender. Speaking to TOI, Bastar range inspector general of police P Sundarraj said, "As part of the ongoing anti-Naxal operation in the National Park area of Bijapur district, security forces have recovered the dead body of another male cadre. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Air conditioners without external unit. IG stated that an AK-47 rifle along with other explosives, weapons, and ammunition have been recovered from the encounter site. "Bhaskar, a resident of Adilabad district in Telangana, was the Secretary of the Mancherial-Komarambheem (MKB) division of the CPI (Maoist) outfit," the IG further said. In the same operation on June 5, security forces had recovered the body of Central Committee member Gautam alias Sudhakar along with an AK-47 rifle. The search operation in the area is still ongoing to trace other Maoist cadres in the nearby area. Detailed information regarding other Maoist casualties and recoveries will be shared after the operation concludes and full confirmation is received.
