Referee Chris Rooney aims to return to NHL playoffs after high stick
May 20 - NHL referee Chris Rooney hopes to return to the Stanley Cup playoffs after a scary scene unfolded during Game 7 of the second-round series between the Toronto Maple Leafs and Florida Panthers on Sunday night.
Rooney, 49, was injured in the eye area by a high stick from Panthers defenseman Niko Mikkola, who was battling for a pick in the corner. The veteran official was left with a black eye, but no long-term damage, sources confirmed to ESPN on Monday.
Rooney was bleeding badly when he went down on the ice and while being tended to by trainers from both teams. He was ruled out for the rest of the game and received stitches to help close the cut.
Referee Garrett Rank, on standby in case of emergency, replaced Rooney and the game resumed following a break in action.
The visiting Panthers went on to win the game 6-1 and will play the Carolina Hurricanes in the Eastern Conference finals, beginning on Tuesday.

Rays complete comeback to take series with Marlins
June 8 - Brandon Lowe's eighth-inning sacrifice fly capped a comeback for the Tampa Bay Rays on Sunday, as they beat the visiting Miami Marlins 3-2. Yandy Diaz had a hand in each of the runs for the Rays as the designated hitter went 3-for-4 with a home run and two runs batted in. His eighth-inning double chased reliever Valente Bellozo (1-3). Pinch-runner Jose Caballero stole third off Calvin Faucher, allowing him to score on Lowe's fly ball to shallow center. Edwin Uceta (5-1) pitched a perfect eighth and ninth with three strikeouts for the Rays, who have won five of their last six games. Rookie Heriberto Hernandez enjoyed the first three-hit day of his major league career, but it was not enough for the Marlins as they fell for the sixth time in their last seven contests. One day after an 11-10 Marlins win in 10 innings, Sunday's rubber match of the three-game series was a pitchers' duel between Miami's bullpen and Tampa Bay starter Drew Rasmussen, who entered with a 23-inning shutout streak, and three relievers. It took just three Marlins batters, aided by a Rays fielding blunder, to end that streak. Edwards led off with a single, and he managed to get to third on Jesus Sanchez's bouncer up the middle. Shortstop Taylor Walls fielded the ball on the right field side of second base and could not tag Edwards, opting to get Sanchez at first. However, with a shift in place on the left-handed hitter, third baseman Junior Caminero covered second. That allowed Edwards to reach third. He scored on Otto Lopez's single. Sanchez made it 2-0 in the top of the fifth when his two-out single brought Hernandez home from second. Diaz tied it a half-inning later with his two-out, two-run blast, an opposite-field shot to right off Bellozo, the fourth of five Marlins pitchers for the day. Bellozo allowed all three runs on two hits and a walk over 3 1/3 innings with three strikeouts. Ramussen surrendered the two runs across six innings, scattering six hits while walking one and striking out three. Sunday's no-decision was the righty's first since April 24. --Field Level Media

Report: Dolphins CB Jalen Ramsey will not attend minicamp
June 8 - Miami Dolphins cornerback Jalen Ramsey does not plan to attend the team's mandatory minicamp this week while the club continues to seek a trade, NFL Network reported on Sunday. Dolphins general manager Chris Grier said prior to the 2025 NFL Draft that Ramsey didn't request a trade, but they came to the joint realization that a potential move makes sense following several conversations about his contract. Ramsey, 30, signed a three-year contract extension in September 2024 and then started all 17 games for Miami. Grier didn't select a cornerback until the 150th pick in April's draft -- Florida's Jason Marshall Jr. Ramsey is guaranteed $25.1 million in 2025, but a new team would owe him $21.1 million since the Dolphins already have paid his $4 million roster bonus. Ramsey came to Miami in March 2023 in a trade with the Los Angeles Rams for a third-round pick and tight end Hunter Long. Ramsey missed the first seven games that season with a knee injury, but he still made the Pro Bowl for the seventh time. --Field Level Media

BREAKING NEWS NFL star Jalen Ramsey makes shock move amid Miami Dolphins trade standoff
Jalen Ramsey may still officially be a member of the Miami Dolphins but he won't be joining the team this week. The seven-time Pro Bowl cornerback was previously linked with a trade out of Miami before the NFL Draft but with the Dolphins' mandatory minicamp set to begin this week, Ramsey and the franchise are still locked in a standoff. As a result, the defensive back is sitting out of the beginning of minicamp, steering clear of the team's offseason program, according to Ian Rapoport. More to follow.
