Wildlife Prairie Park celebrates Mother's Day with events and activities
PEORIA, Ill. (WMBD) — A delicious Mother's Day Brunch ushers in an exciting season ahead, full of events and activities for area families at Wildlife Prairie Park.
Winter Katterhenry, an educational lead at the park and Ollie the Owl stopped by WMBD This Morning to talk more about upcoming events and activities.
Before the Mother's Day Brunch, the park will celebrate the completion of the nation's first transcontinental railroad when a golden spike placed on May 10, 1869. To commemorate that, the park's 'Prairie Zephyr' will tour people around the park to all the hot spots, all day long.
On Sunday, there's a traditional Mother's Day Brunch. There are different menus one for the early brunch at 10 a.m. and another for the later brunch at 12:30 p.m. Be sure check the web site to make your decision.
The Mother's Day brunch also includes free train rides for moms on May 11.
Other events coming in May include the 'Firecraft Survival Skills Class' on May 17, and the new 'Critters & Cocktails' mixology experience on May 23.

Canadian road trips to US drop 38 percent year-on-year
The number of Canadians returning from road trips to the United States fell sharply in May compared to the same period in 2024. Canadian-resident return trips by car totaled 1.3 million, a 38.1 percent drop from May 2024 — marking the fifth consecutive month of year-over-year declines. Canadian-resident return trips from the U.S. by air also fell — by 24.2 percent — compared to May 2024. The decline in Canadian-resident air travel from the U.S. accounts for the overall dip in return air travel. While Canadians' return travel by air declined by 3.7 percent overall, return air travel increased by 9.8 percent among Canadians returning from overseas countries compared to last May. U.S. residents, meanwhile, traveled to Canada at a lower rate than they did last year but saw a more modest decline than their Canadian counterparts. U.S.-resident arrivals to Canada by car fell by 8.4 percent and, by air, fell by 0.3 percent, compared to last May. The decline in Canadian road trips to the U.S. continued a trend seen in prior months. In April 2025, Canadian-resident return trips by car from the U.S. totaled 1.2 million — a 35.2 percent decline from April 2024. Canadian-resident return trips by air fell by 19.9 percent, compared to the prior month. The overall tourism decline threatens to wipe out $12.5 billion from the American economy this year, NewsNation reported. The decline in tourism comes as tensions between the U.S. and Canada have cooled under the Trump administration, as President Trump continues to muse publicly about making Canada a 51st state of America, which Prime Minister Mark Carney has repeatedly rejected as a nonstarter. Iowa veteran more than halfway done hiking Appalachian Trail
WHO 13 NEWS – Iowa veteran Joedy VanVelzen is more than halfway done hiking the Appalachian Trail: an expedition that extends nearly 2,200 miles between Georgia and Maine and passes through 14 states. He made it to Duncannon, Pennsylvania, and is planning to reach New Jersey this week. He passed the 1,200-mile mark with a fresh haircut, beard trim, new shoes, and his wife's hiking poles after he snapped his. She brought them when she visited him in Pennsylvania the last week of May. Jefferson dives deep on recreation with parks, pickleball, historic pool VanVelzen is hiking with fellow veterans as a part of Warrior Expeditions, and is still receiving lots of community support along the way. He continues to see interesting wildlife and snapped photos of a white peacock and cicadas, which he notes are really loud on the trail. Springfield airport plans major upgrades for 2025
SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — The Springfield-Branson National Airport has announced some new improvements and additions in 2025. Springfield-Branson National Airport unveils new history exhibit According to a press release, the biggest change happening will be the removal of their carpet and the installation of terrazzo flooring. Approximately 93,000 square feet of tile and carpet will be replaced with terrazzo. Beginning early this summer, airport customers will notice sections of the terminal being closed one at a time throughout the 42-week installation. In addition to the flooring, the airport will also be adding new automated exit lanes in the fall, new concrete will be poured as part of the Terminal Apron Expansion Project in the next 12 months, and short-term parking will be expanded to add more than 225 parking spaces in 2026.
