Netflix post-Bafta party moved to new location after blaze at Chiltern Firehouse

Yahoo15-02-2025

Netflix has moved the location of its annual post-Bafta Film Awards party following a blaze at the original venue.
Around 100 people were forced to evacuate Chiltern Firehouse, a luxury hotel favoured by celebrities, on Valentine's Day after the fire ripped through ducting at the London establishment.
Streaming platform Netflix has now moved its after party to luxury hotel The Twenty Two in Mayfair's Grosvenor Square.
The London Fire Brigade (LFB) said that 20 fire engines and about 125 firefighters were involved in tackling the blaze on Chiltern Street in Marylebone on Friday.
A firefighter at the scene told the PA news agency the five-star hotel and restaurant will likely need a 'large refurbishment'.
A-list actors and award-winning filmmakers will take to the Bafta red carpet on Sunday for the annual awards ceremony, which is being hosted by Scottish actor David Tennant for the second year in a row.
Among the British stars nominated this year are Cynthia Erivo, for her role playing Elphaba in the musical Wicked, and Ralph Fiennes, who starred in papal-set drama Conclave.

Netflix's new mystery thriller movie gets first trailer — and it looks like a claustrophobic nightmare

I wouldn't say I've ever been particularly claustrophobic, but after watching Netflix's first trailer for the German thriller 'Brick,' I can definitely feel the nightmare of confinement setting in. The premise is simple but intriguing: a couple wakes up to find their apartment building completely encased by an impenetrable brick wall that appeared overnight. The plot immediately reminded me of 'The Platform' and '10 Cloverfield Lane,' which are two of my favorite claustrophobic thrillers. So, it's no surprise this one went straight onto my summer watchlist. 'Brick' will land on Netflix on July 10, 2025, and judging by the first trailer, it looks like a mystery thriller viewers will devour (and maybe come to fear enclosed spaces a little more). The trailer opens with Olivia (Ruby O. Fee) telling her partner, Tim (Matthias Schweighöfer), that she's leaving him and not coming back. But as she tries to walk out of the apartment, she's met with a brick wall. Confused, they soon realize their entire building is surrounded by this strange structure. Like anyone would, they start kicking and throwing themselves against it, but it doesn't budge. The water doesn't work, there's no cell reception and even drilling through the brick gets them nowhere. Instead, they manage to break through a plastered wall and find their neighbor on the other side just as panicked as they are. You can feel the tension start to rise as Tim, Olivia, and the rest of the building's residents try to figure out what's happening and how to escape. But as the fear and claustrophobia set in, it's clear the real danger might be what's happening inside, not just outside. Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. Along with the trailer and release date, Netflix's synopsis reads: 'Tim and Olivia awake trapped in their apartment behind an impenetrable, futuristic wall which has materialized overnight … and they are not alone. The entire building and its residents seem to be enclosed. 'What happened? Who built that wall and why? Without any chance of outside help, they must band together to find a way out. Can they solve the mystery of the wall in time — and survive?' 'Brick' is directed by Philip Koch and features a strong ensemble cast, including Ruby O. Fee, Matthias Schweighöfer, Frederick Lau, Salber Lee Williams, Murathan Muslu, Axel Werner, Sira-Anna Faal, and Alexander Beyer. This is very much a claustrophobic thriller and one that will probably have you guessing until the very end. The trailer suggests a story that leans heavily into psychological pressure, exploring what happens to people when their world suddenly shrinks and the rules no longer make sense. Plus, it's perfect for anyone who enjoys a good single-location thriller. Visually, though, it actually looks pretty sharp and stylized, and I'm curious to see how it balances dread and mystery in the right way. Thankfully, we don't have long to wait to see the mystery unfold. If you're drawn to stories that thrive on slow-building tension, this one looks like it'll have you hooked from the first minute. 'Brick' starts streaming on Netflix from July 10. In the meantime, see what got added to Netflix in June 2025.

Kings of Joburg season 3 drops — Connie Ferguson and Malik Yoba bring the fire

Kings of Joburg, which premiered in December 2020, is now set to release its third season. The series features Connie Ferguson, who is also the executive producer, Zolisa Xaluva and Thembi Seete, among others. Ferguson says they invested in the show because they believed it was not a one-hit wonder. Season 3 of one of SA's most loved series, the star-studded Kings of Joburg, hits Netflix screens in just a few hours. Executive producer, Connie Ferguson, led a tight ship and kept this going even after her husband Shona's passing in 2021. The iconic actress, who plays Veronica Masire in the series, said that, although viewers thought they knew what to look forward to, based on the first two seasons, they were in for a surprise. Supplied Season 3 will see the Masire family facing new challenges and an enemy who wants to take down their empire. When asked whether they had expected Kings of Joburg to gain momentum the way it had, the former Generations and Generations: The Legacy actress laughed and said: 'Definitely!' She said they believed in the show and were willing to invest in it and the partnerships went a long way. We hoped for it. We had high expectations, but you never know how the public will receive it. It was a risk, what we did with Kings of Joburg [season] 1, but how it was received was such a pleasant surprise because it said to us, we were on the right track. Connie Ferguson She added that, when they developed the first season, they had other seasons in the pipeline. She said season 1 had been a test and they had passed it with flying colours. Ferguson, who recently celebrated her 55th birthday, shared that Netflix was a supportive partner and her US co-executive producer, Samad Davis, brought knowledge about the international film and television space. 'Our approach of bridging the gap between SA, the rest of Africa and America paid off. We didn't know how that would be received, but it was received very well. As much as Kings of Joburg is a South African show, we believe it is a world show.' Ferguson said season 3 would showcase how her character had developed and would do anything to protect her family. Supplied Part of Veronica's development includes revealing her sensitive and loving side. This will introduce US actor Malik Yoba, who plays Isador, Veronica's love interest. Yoba, who was in SA for the season 3 press junket, the launch and Ferguson's birthday party, said he was honoured to be part of the show. He said filming on the continent as an African American was also an honour. 'I don't think I have done this before in a character, where a woman holds the power and the man is in support of that power, which is a nice dynamic.' The actor said his first visit to Johannesburg had been in 1996, adding that this was his sixth. Supplied Veteran actor Abdul Khoza shocked many in May when he announced that he had quit acting after 14 years of bringing different characters to life. At the time, he also shared his last self-tape audition, saying it was for aspiring actors to see what it took to get a role. Talking about his character Lester in Kings of Joburg, Khoza said he experienced physical strain and endurance. In this season, Lester had had to run and fight a lot, but he did his best. 'It was exciting to play Lester. I enjoyed that there was a story for me to finally play as Lester and discover more of Lester myself. With the first season, I only had a glimpse of what my character was really about, the story I had,' he said. Thembi Seete, Busisiwe 'Cici' Thwala, Clint Brink, Enyinna Nwigwe, Maurice Paige and Zolisa Xaluva round up the cast. Season 3 was launched in Sandton last week, with Ferguson assuring viewers that this would be the most thrilling and amazing project. The new series starts streaming on Netflix on Friday.

Netflix just dropped 'The Diplomat' season 3 teaser trailer — and it feels like a 'West Wing' reunion

Netflix has just treated us to a fresh look at "The Diplomat" season 3, and we've now got a rough idea of when we can expect the show to air. The minute-long teaser primarily hinges on unveiling one thing about the show. Or, rather, one person: Bradley Whitford (another "The West Wing" alumnus), who has joined "The Diplomat" cast as Grace Penn's (fellow "West Wing" star, Allison Janney) husband, Todd Penn. Other than showing Todd's part of the proceedings, it's light on details. This new teaser is otherwise a combination of a tense score, scenes of police escorts, fancy attire and then a quick montage from the forthcoming season (running, a swimming pool chat, and lots of looks into the distance, apparently). Then, it wraps up with a glimpse at a pow-wow between the Wylers and the Penns. And, judging by the glance that Kate flashes in response to Todd's "How was everyone's day at the office?", it's going to be an awkward and/or dramatic conversation. Excited? Well, "The Diplomat" season 3 already has a release window, and it's not a million years away. You can look forward to a reunion with Kate this fall, and we'll be keeping an eye out for a precise release date. This part of the article contains light spoilers for "The Diplomat" season 3. "The Diplomat" season 3 teaser trailer might not give much away, but Netflix has shared some story details for the forthcoming season over on Tudum. Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. "When we pick up for Season 3 of "The Diplomat," the synopsis reads, "Kate has just accused Vice President Grace Penn (Allison Janney) of hatching a terrorist plot and admitted she's after the VP's job. But now the president is dead, Kate's husband Hal (Rufus Sewell) may have inadvertently killed him, and Grace Penn is the leader of the free world. "None of this slows Hal's campaign to land Kate the vice presidency. Kate steps into a role she never wanted, with a freedom she never expected, an increasingly complicated friendship with Foreign Secretary Austin Dennison (David Gyasi), and an unnerving bond with First Gentleman Todd Penn (Whitford)." In addition to the above names, "The Diplomat" season 3 cast list also includes Ali Ahn as CIA Station Chief Eidra Park, Ato Essandoh as Deputy Chief of Mission, Stuart Hayford, and Rory Kinnear as British Prime Minister Nicol Trowbridge.
