‘Mind blown': scientists discover sex reversal in kookaburras and lorikeets with cause unknown

About 5% of common Australian wild birds including kookaburras and lorikeets could have undergone a 'sex reversal' where their genetic sex does not match their reproductive organs, according to a new study.
The study is thought to be the first to find widespread sex reversal across multiple wild bird species, but the cause of the phenomenon is not yet known.
The results suggest sex reversal is more common in wild birds than previously thought, and have raised concerns about the potential impact of chemicals that can disrupt hormones in animals.
Researchers tested 480 birds across five common species that had died after being admitted to wildlife hospitals in south-east Queensland.
Researchers first used a DNA test to determine a bird's genetic sex; in birds, males have a pair of Z chromosomes and females have one Z and one W.
But after dissecting the birds, they found a mismatch between the DNA test and the reproductive organs of 24 of the birds.

Associate Prof Dominique Potvin, a co-author of the research at the University of the Sunshine Coast, said the team were deeply sceptical when the results first came in.
'I was thinking, is this right?' she said. 'So we rechecked, and rechecked and rechecked. And then we were thinking, 'oh my God'.'
Potvin said she had revealed the results to ornithologist friends. 'They were mind-blown,' she said.
Almost all of the 'sex discordant' birds were genetically female but had male reproductive organs, the research, published in the Royal Society journal Biology Letters found.
In one case, a kookaburra that was genetically male had a stretched oviduct – the passageway for an egg – that suggested 'recent egg production', Potvin said.
Two genetically female crested pigeons had both testicular and ovarian reproductive structures, the research found.
Other birds tested were rainbow lorikeets, scaly-breasted lorikeets and Australian magpies. The lowest levels of sex reversal was 3%, found in Australian magpies, and the highest was 6.3% in crested pigeons.
Dr Clancy Hall, the lead author of the research, also at the University of the Sunshine Coast, said sex-reversed birds could affect reproductive success that should raise concerns about the impact on threatened species.
She said: 'This can lead to skewed sex ratios, reduced population sizes, altered mate preferences, and even population decline.
'The ability to unequivocally identify the sex and reproductive status of individuals is crucial across many fields of study.'
The causes of the sex reversals were unclear, but one factor could be contact with chemicals in the environment.

Sex reversal is known to occur in some molluscs, fish, amphibians and reptiles and can occur naturally or be influenced by chemicals that can affect an animal's hormones – known as endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs).
Prof Kate Buchanan, who studies the evolutionary biology of wild birds at Deakin University but was not involved in the study, said because the default sex of birds was female, it was not surprising that most of the sex reversal affects were in the direction of female to male.
She said: 'The most likely explanation of the masculinisation is some environmental stimulation, probably anthropogenic chemicals.'
Buchanan has been part of research that has found EDCs in insects that develop in sewage treatment works and are food for some birds, as well as a study that found male European starlings exposed to the chemicals developed longer and more complex songs, but had a damaged immune system.
She said even if the masculinisation of affected birds was reversible in their lifetime, 'it would probably knock them out of being reproductive'.
Dr Clare Holleley is the head of vertebrate collections at the Australian government science agency the CSIRO and has studied sex reversal in lizards.
'What's doing this is now the big question,' she said.
While a cause could be natural – for example, sex reversal in lizards can be triggered by temperature changes – Holleley said it was likely 'something else is going on'.
'If sex determination gets disrupted then something has to push you off track. The most likely [cause] is endocrine disrupting chemicals.'
Dr Golo Maurer, the director of conservation strategy at BirdLife Australia, said the research was likely to cause a stir in the ornithological field.
He said the presence of EDCs and the potential impacts was a 'huge concern', given the other crises facing birds, from climate change to habitat clearance and plastic pollution.
Some experts were cautious about extrapolating the results to the wider population of wild birds, because the birds were not a random sample but had been admitted to hospitals.

Medication prescribed to people with ADHD not only helps them focus but it also reduces the risk of suicidal behaviours, substance misuse, transport accidents and criminality, a study has found. It's estimated 2.6 million people in the UK live with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), which affects around 5 per cent of children and 2.5 per cent of adults worldwide. But in the UK, just over half are prescribed medication for it. Researchers compared the impacts of medicating ADHD on those who have been recently diagnosed. Using data from Swedish national registers between 2007 and 2020 researchers at the Karolinska Institute, Sweden, were able to examine the effects of ADHD drug treatment in 148,581 individuals aged between six and 64-years-old over two years. Just over half (57 per cent) of participants had started drug treatment for ADHD, with methylphenidate – a type of stimulant – being the most commonly prescribed (88.4 per cent). However, the other people who were also newly diagnosed did not receive medication. The study, published by the BMJ, assessed how often those with ADHD had suicidal behaviours, substance misuse, accidental injuries, transport accidents, and criminality, over two years after their diagnosis. After accounting for factors including age, sex, education level, psychiatric diagnoses and medical history, ADHD medication was associated with a 17 per cent reduction for suicidal behaviour, 15 per cent for substance misuse, 12 per cent for transport accidents, and 13 per cent for criminality. However, the reduction was not statistically significant for a first-time accidental injury. But amongst people with recurrent events, the rate reductions associated with ADHD medication were seen for all five outcomes: a 15 per cent reduction for suicidal attempts, 25 per cent for substance misuse, 4 per cent for accidental injuries, 16 per cent for transport accidents, and 25 per cent for criminality. Samuele Cortese Professor of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at the University of Southampton and study author, highlighted that people need to be educated on the long-term risks of ADHD. 'Commonly people think ADHD is over diagnosed but there are still many people who have ADHD that are not diagnosed, and many are exposed to these risks,' he said. 'Side effects of medication can include reduced appetite and difficulty falling asleep, but they usually get better over time or they can be managed.' Struggling to pay attention, having high energy levels and being impulsive are common symptoms of ADHD. Stimulants can work by increasing activity in the brain, particularly in areas that help control attention and behaviour, according to the NHS. Study authors say that by reducing impulsivity, it may also lower criminality by curbing aggressive behaviour, and enhance attention, which might decrease the risk of transport accidents by minimising distractions. 'These results provide evidence on the effects of ADHD drug treatment on important health related and social outcomes that should inform clinical practice and the debate on the drug treatment of ADHD,' study authors conclude.

Fossils unearthed along Victoria 's Surf Coast have led to the discovery of an ancient whale species with special adaptations for hunting, including large eyes and sharp teeth, shedding light on early marine mammal evolution. The species has been named Janjucetus dullardi after Victoria local resident Ross Dullard, who found the ancient whale's fossil fragments in 2019. Janjucetus dullardi is one of their earliest cousins of modern whales and roamed the seas around 26 million years ago, say researchers from Museums Victoria Research Institute. Unlike the modern gentle giants, Janjucetus dullardi w as a fast, sharp-toothed predator with a compact body about the size of a dolphin built for hunting, according to a new study published in the journal Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society. 'It's essentially a little whale with big eyes and a mouth full of sharp, slicing teeth ... Imagine the shark-like version of a baleen whale – small and deceptively cute, but definitely not harmless,' said Ruairidh Duncan, lead author of the study, The prehistoric whale had a short snout, large forward-facing eyes about the size of tennis balls and sharp slicing teeth, researchers say. The early whale ancestor would have been a compact, yet fearsome sight in the warm, shallow seas of ancient Victoria, scientists noted. The findings offer insight into the early evolution of baleen whales – the filter-feeding giant mammals cruising through modern oceans. It also sheds more light on the prehistoric region, now in modern-day Australia, which scientists say was 'once a cradle' for some of the most unusual whales in history. Researchers made the new species discovery based on a partial skull fossil with attached ear bone found in June 2019 by Victoria resident Mr Dullard while walking along the beach. After recognising its scientific importance, the Victoria resident donated the fossil to Museums Victoria, where researchers carefully studied it in detail. 'This kind of public discovery and its reporting to the museum is discovery has unlocked an entire chapter of whale evolution we've never seen before. It's a reminder that world-changing fossils can be found in your own backyard,' said study co-author Erich Fitzgerald, senior curator at Museums Victoria Research Institute. Scientists found that the fragments belonged to a juvenile specimen just over two metres long. They concluded that it belonged to a group of early whales known as mammalodontids that lived around 30 to 23 million years ago. The latest find marks the third known mammalodontid species from Victoria, and only the fourth found worldwide. It is also the first of its kind to preserve teeth and inner ear structures in detail, revealing how early whales fed, heard, moved and behaved in the water. Using advanced CT scans of the ear bones, researchers hope to further understand how the early species sensed its environment for hunting and navigating the oceans. 'This fossil opens a window into how ancient whales grew and changed, and how evolution shaped their bodies as they adapted to life in the sea,' Dr Fitzgerald said. 'We're entering a new phase of discovery. This region is rewriting the story of how whales came to rule the oceans, with some surprising plot twists!' he added,
