Won't allow imposition of Hindi in Maharashtra, BJP trying to create language divide: Uddhav

The Hindu5 hours ago

Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray on Thursday (June 26, 2025) reaffirmed his strong Opposition to "imposition" of Hindi in Maharashtra and accused the BJP of trying to create a divide among people on the basis of language.
Speaking to reporters, the former Maharashtra Chief Minister claimed the BJP, his former ally, is attempting to impose a 'language emergency' in the predominantly Marathi-speaking State.
Mr. Thackeray insisted his party was not opposed to Hindi, but was certainly against its imposition.
"We don't oppose or hate any language, but that doesn't mean we will allow imposition of any language. We oppose the imposition of Hindi and it will continue," he asserted amid the ongoing controversy over teaching Hindi to students of Classes 1 to 5 in Marathi and English medium schools.

"The BJP is trying to create a divide among people on the basis of language. It is imposing a language emergency," the former CM claimed.
Imposition of Hindi in Maharashtra, where the BJP heads the ruling coalition, is part of the national party's hidden agenda, he alleged.
The contentious language issue can be resolved if Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis declares that Hindi will not be made compulsory in state schools, the opposition leader contended.
He maintained that during his tenure as CM from 2019 to 2022, he had taken the decision to make Marathi a compulsory subject in all schools of Maharashtra.
Thackeray declared the Shiv Sena (UBT) will take part in an agitation organised by civil society members at the Azad Maidan in south Mumbai on July 7 against the three-language formula in schools and imposition of Hindi.
The BJP is trying to create a divide in Mumbai and Maharashtra where there is cohesiveness among Marathi speakers and others, he alleged.
Taking a dig at his arch rival, Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, who heads the ruling coalition partner Shiv Sena, the former CM said "traitors" need to be told about the ideals of party founder late Bal Thackeray.
Speaking on the controversy about a third language in the school curriculum, Chief Minister Fadnavis made it clear that Hindi is optional while Marathi is compulsory.
The row erupted after the state government last week issued an amended order, stating Hindi will "generally" be taught as the third language to students in Marathi and English medium schools from Classes 1 to 5.
According to the order, if 20 students per grade in a school wish to study any other Indian language, they can opt out of Hindi. If such a demand arises, either a teacher will be appointed or the language will be taught online.

Cong, NSUI slams BJP for politicising schools with Emergency circular

Panaji: Educational institutions and school students should not be used by BJP as a playground for political campaigns, said Congress . Congress party's student wing met the education director on Friday and demanded that the circular mandating schools to observe 'Samvidhan Hatya Diwas' be withdrawn. The National Students' Union of India ( NSUI ) said involving students in activities about the 1975-77 Emergency is 'inappropriate political engagement' and a distraction from education. 'Schools should remain neutral educational spaces. Involving students in politically sensitive discussions about the Emergency risks exposing them to biased narratives, which may hinder their objective learning and critical thinking,' said state NSUI president Naushad Chowdhari. The NSUI fears that govt will choose not to provide a balanced historical perspective on the Emergency. The students attempted to convince the education director to withdraw the circular. Police initially prevented the students from entering the building, but finally relented. '1975-77 was a challenging time marked by national security concerns and efforts to maintain stability. It included measures to curb inflation, boost agriculture, and enforce family planning, which some argue were necessary,' said Chowdhari. Congress said that schools should remain apolitical. 'Who is the BJP to talk about democracy when they have been destroying it since day one? We came to meet the education director but were stopped. Is it democracy when the director is preventing students from meeting him?' said a protesting student.

No fair at FaguBaba's shrine asSec 163 imposed

Gorakhpur: Authorities have prohibited the weekly fair at the 105-year-old Fagu Baba's shrine in Badliya village under the Itwa police station following objections raised by former BJP MLA Raghvendra Pratap Singh. The move came after Singh claimed that the site is not a Sufi dargah but the samadhi (tomb) of a Hindu man named Fagu Prasad. The former MLA alleged that occult practices and monetary exploitation were taking place at the shrine where women from outside the region would stay for extended periods. "We had informed the administration. They took the right steps and we are satisfied," Singh said, adding that they had planned to recite the Hanuman Chalisa at the site on Thursday. However, after the announcement of recital of the Hanuman Chalisa by Singh, heavy police force was deployed at the spot on Thursday morning. SDM, Dumariyaganj, Sanjeev Dixit imposed Section 163 BNSS to prevent gatherings. "Based on police and CO Itwa's reports, it was found that exorcism-like activities were being conducted regularly. The land also falls under charagah (pasture) category and legal action will be taken," Dixit stated. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Neuropatia incomodando à noite? She said: "The shrine is a symbol of Hindu-Muslim unity. I will collect all legal documents related to the dargah and move court if required. People's faith is attached to the place, especially women, who gather here every Thursday. I will fight for their belief."

NDA netas, PK take a swipe at Tejashwi

Patna: Functionaries of the ruling NDA and Jan Suraaj Party founder Prashant Kishor on Thursday launched a scathing attack on RJD leader Tejashwi Prasad Yadav after he promised to "transform Bihar in 20 months". Speaking at an event in Bihta to mark the 75th death anniversary of Swami Sahajanand Saraswati, deputy CM Samrat Choudhary and water resources minister Vijay Kumar Choudhary ridiculed the outreach, suggesting the youth of Bihar still remember the state of governance under the 15-year tenure of RJD chief Lalu Prasad and his family. Prashant Kishor, addressing the reporters in Ara, said, "Tejashwi thinks he will reach the seat of power by distributing pens. While the educated youth of Bihar are roaming unemployed, a ninth fail wants to become the king of Bihar by distributing pens." Kishor went on to question the RJD leader's track record. "His parents were chief ministers for 15 years. He himself was the deputy CM for three years. Yet less than 5% of children from Dalit, backward and Muslim communities are able to pass the 12th exams. Tejashwi should answer first," he said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Cervecería Nacional CFD: Calcula cuánto podrías ganar invirtiendo solo $100 Empieza a invertir Inscríbete ahora Undo The BJP also dismissed Tejashwi's promises as hollow rhetoric. "The youth in Bihar are now intellectually awakened and can see through the sugar-coated traps of political deception crafted for elections by Tejashwi," said BJP state media head Danish Eqbal. JD(U) spokesperson Manish Yadav echoed similar criticism, calling Tejashwi's talk on jobs and education "ridiculous." "When the leader of opposition addresses the youth, it is ironic. During the tenure of his parents, the appointment process itself was mired in corruption. Jobs were not given, they were auctioned," he alleged.
