Chittoor's Ganga Jatara to begin today

The Hindu11-05-2025

Chittoor gears up to hold the annual three-day Ganga Jatara in the honour of Goddess Gangamma scheduled from Monday. The mass festival, with deep roots in the region's cultural fabric, attracts devotees from across Rayalaseema districts, neighboring Tamil Nadu and Karnataka States.
The Ganga Jatara dating back to more than three centuries is unlike most jataras centred around temples. The Jatara involves the installation of Goddess Gangamma idol made of clay and turmeric in the middle of the road at the busy Bazar Street, and on the concluding day, the idol is ceremoniously immersed in the Kattamanchi tank.
For three days, devotees dressed up in different attires engage in a variety of rituals, including the offering of 'Ambali,' a Ragi-made porridge, to the Goddess. The entire Chittoor city and surrounding villages come alive with processions, music, and dance, creating a frenzied atmosphere.
Meanwhile, Superintendent of Police V.N. Manikantha Chandolu has ordered the deployment of about 800 police personnel to ensure the peaceful conduct of the Jatara. Special teams will manage traffic and organisers were directed to exercise utmost caution, especially with electrical illumination works.
The Ganga Jatara will simultaneous be celebrated in Obanapalle, Santhapeta, Doddipalle, Murakambattu, Greamspet, and Kongareddipalle.

Supreme Court Issues Notice To Karnataka For Ban On Kamal Haasan's Thug Life

Last Updated: During the film's audio launch, Kamal Haasan claimed that 'Kannada is born out of Tamil', sparking strong reactions in Karnataka. The Supreme Court on Friday issued notice on a plea challenging Karnataka's 'extra-judicial ban" on the screening of 'Thug Life' — a film by veteran filmmaker Mani Ratnam and superstar Kamal Haasan. A bench of Justices Prashant Kumar Mishra and Manmohan sought responses of Karnataka's Chief Secretary, Principal Secretary (Home) and Director General of Police in the matter and posted the petition for further hearing on Tuesday (June 17). During the film's audio launch, Kamal Haasan claimed that 'Kannada is born out of Tamil", sparking strong reactions in Karnataka. The writ petition filed by Bengaluru's M. Mahesh Reddy claimed that despite certification by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), the Karnataka government has prevented Thug Life's theatrical release through oral instructions and police interference. Advocate A. Velan, representing the petitioner, contended that such actions amounted to an unconstitutional restriction on free speech and expression guaranteed under Article 19(1)(a) of the Constitution. The Karnataka government has completely 'capitulated" to extremist elements, who were attacking linguistic minorities and calling for the burning of theatres, submitted Velan. As per the petition, the ban stems from a deliberate campaign of terror, including explicit threats of arson against cinema halls, incitement to large-scale communal violence targeting linguistic minorities, and a chilling call for a repeat of past anti-Tamil riots. 'This reign of intimidation is a direct, flagrant violation of the Fundamental Rights to Freedom of Speech and Expression (Article 19(1)(a)) and to Practice any Profession (Article 19(1)(g)). More seriously, it is a calculated attack on the secular fabric and public order of the State," stated the petition. Following the row over Haasan's remarks on the origins of the Kannada language, the film's producer, Raaj Kamal Films International, had petitioned the Karnataka High Court seeking protection. However, the Karnataka HC suggested that Kamal Haasan issue an apology, but the actor-politician has refused to do so. As a result of the actor's refusal to issue an outright apology, the film's release in Karnataka has been postponed indefinitely.

V-Unbeatable cheating case: HC slams MBVV police for tardy investigation

MUMBAI: The Bombay high court on Tuesday rapped the Mira Bhayander-Vasai Virar (MBVV) Police, stating that the senior officers adopted a 'calculated way' to defend their juniors. This came in response to the cheating accusations made by the dance group, Vikas Unbeatable, renowned for winning America's Got Talent, against their manager. The troupe had approached the high court through advocate Shravan Giri, alleging that no action was taken by the police on their complaint against their manager, Om Prakash Chauhan, for alleged embezzlement of funds. Their plea claimed that the MBVV police refused to file an FIR against Chauhan when they first approached them on July 24, 2024. No action was taken after escalating the matter to the DCP on July 25. The petition also highlighted that when the group members, along with their parents and guardians, went to demand their dues, police officers at the scene used 'criminal force' against them. Public prosecutor Hiten Venegaonkar stated that the matter has been looked into and as a result of it, the then Investigating officer was exonerated. A report was filed by the assistant commissioner of police on January 23, 2025, which contained 22 points as regards the conduct of the officer. He further stated that a fresh enquiry shall be conducted against the officer by an officer not below the rank of additional commissioner of police, Mira-Bhayandar, which shall be completed within a period of six weeks. In response to these submissions, advocate Shravan Giri, appearing for the petitioner, submitted that all the relevant material in support of the 22 points shall be submitted to the office of the additional commissioner of police within a period of two weeks. 'Needless to clarify that the period for completion of enquiry being six weeks shall be reckoned from the date of the petitioner submitting the relevant document and material in support of his contention against the officer,' he added. The division bench of justices Nitin Sambre and Sachin Deshmukh discarded the report of the assistant commissioner of police, observing that the 22 points were not looked into and dealt with in the Enquiry Report. It directed the authorities to make the enquiry report available to the petitioner by July 31, highlighting that the petitioner shall have every right to question the report and the adverse conduct of the police inspector, who had earlier acted as an Investigating Officer in the matter. The dance group, which first gained fame as the runner-up on the reality show 'Dance Plus,' claimed that they never received the prize money or performance fees. The dancers stated that they only received meagre payments ranging from ₹3,000 to ₹5,000, even though during their 60-day stay in the United States for America's Got Talent, they were supposed to receive a $25 ( ₹2,084) daily allowance. Subsequently, with no visible progress in the investigation, the case was transferred to the Economic Offence Wing (EOW). After the inquiry was conducted, the court found out that the authorities did not address the troupe's grievances properly.

UP Police ‘Housefull 5' safety post gets high-five from Riteish Deshmukh

Lucknow: The Uttar Pradesh Police's innovative road safety awareness campaign on X went viral thanks to its creative nod to Bollywood film Housefull 5. The post cleverly urged two-wheeler riders to wear helmets by presenting them with a dramatic choice of two endings—much like the dual climaxes of the film. On June 9, 2025, the UP Police shared a visually striking post depicting two contrasting outcomes for the same motorcyclist. In Option 5A, the rider donned a helmet and remained unharmed. In Option 5B, he lay injured, head bandaged—clearly a victim of not wearing a helmet. The tagline read: "Book Your Climax Wisely", with a caption echoing the cinematic theme: "Same cast, different ending. When you're out on the road, remember it's your choice how it ends." The campaign was part of a broader directive from Director General of Police Rajeev Krishna, aimed at enhancing public awareness through social media. Within 24 hours, the post amassed over 1.22 lakh views, 1,100+ likes, and 650 retweets, making it one of UP Police's most engaging safety messages in recent months. Adding to its visibility, Housefull 5 actor Riteish Deshmukh shared the post with a quote tweet, urging, "Be Responsible – Make the right choice. @Uppolice #RoadSafety #Helmet." The post drew inspiration from Housefull 5's unique narrative format, which offered viewers two alternate endings—5A and 5B. This novelty served as the perfect metaphor for the road safety message: just as filmgoers choose which version to watch, riders choose how their journey ends—safely or otherwise.
