FIDE has a rule that the winners of certain elite competitions can avoid the usual norm-and-rating route and become GMs directly. The Women's World Cup is one of those FIDE events where the winner straightaway becomes a GM if not already.
"I need time to process it (victory). It think it was fate me getting the Grandmaster title this way because I didn't even have one norm (coming into the event) and all I was thinking of was 'Oh, when can I get my norm', and now I'm a Grandmaster so...," said Deshmukh, who beat compatriot Koneru Humpy to emerge winner.
The youngster had her mother, a doctor, by her side in her moment of glory.
She got emotional soon after beating Humpy, a two-time World Rapid champion and embraced her mother in a heartfelt hug, sobbing all along.
"It's hard for me to speak right now. It definitely means a lot, but of course there's a lot more to achieve," said Deshmukh. "I'm hoping this is just the start." The achievement made Deshmukh only the fourth Indian woman to become a GM after Humpy, Dronavalli Harika and R. Vaishali.

ED questions Suresh Raina; records statement on alleged links with illegal betting app 1xBet
NEW DELHI: The Enforcement Directorate on Wednesday questioned former international cricketer Suresh Raina and recorded his statement under provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) as part of its probe into a case linked to sports betting app (application) named , sources said. The 38-year-old sportsperson had arrived at the ED headquarters here at 11 am and was seen interacting with CISF personnel and Enforcement Directorate (ED) staff outside the agency's premises. The sources said that the agency's officials got his statement recorded under provisions of the PMLA as part of the investigation linked to a sports betting app (application) named 1xBet. Raina is understood to have been linked to the app through certain endorsements and the ED probe team wants to understand his links with this app, any endorsement fee earned and the mode of communication between the two parties, the sources said. It is to be noted that the ED had recently called representatives of Google and Meta for questioning as part of this probe. It also conducted multi-state searches on Tuesday in connection with a similar investigation against an online betting app named Parimatch. The agency is probing multiple such cases involving illegal betting apps that are alleged to have duped numerous people and investors worth crores of rupees or have evaded a huge amount of taxes. According to estimates by market analysis firms and probe agencies, there are about 22 crore Indian users in various such online betting apps out of which half (about 11 crore) are regular users. The online betting app market in India is worth over USD 100 billion which is growing at the rate of 30 percent, according to a reported assessment made by experts. More to these, the government, while responding to a question in Parliament, informed that it has issued 1,524 orders from 2022 till June 2025 to block online betting and gambling platforms.

He would know the pulse of the changing game, play with minds of the opposition, take his team home more often than not, execute razor-sharp stumpings and if all of this wasn't enough, captain the side to make himself undroppable. (AFP) In the past three T20 World Cups, formulaic picks have delivered sub-par returns. Rishabh Pant has been a constant, but is yet to ace the format. His great ability to second-guess the bowlers in the Test format seems to desert him in T20 cricket, where he is often chained by teams bowling to him on one side of the wicket. The temptation to give the free-spirited left-hander another chance to break free is always there in a big event. But it's been 76 T20Is now. The strongest contender from this year's IPL is Jitesh Sharma. The wicket-keeper batter from Vidarbha always possessed the power to clear the ropes. Playing the finishing role for RCB, Jitesh was able to show his impudence with ramps and scoops, a recent addition to his power hitting. His only serious competition for that slot comes from Dhruv Jurel. The Rajasthan Royals wicket-keeper batter first made a mark playing cameos down the order in the IPL. Karthikeyan upsets Vidit Gujrathi, Vincent Keymer edges closer to maiden title
Agency: Chennai, Aug 13 (PTI) Grandmaster M Karthikeyan eked out a gritty win over compatriot Vidit Gujrathi in round seven of the Chennai Grand Masters as German GM Vincent Keymer strengthened his grip on the title race here on Wednesday. Karthikeyan prevailed with the black pieces over Gujrathi while Keymer registered a clinical win over American GM Awonder Liang, to take a -1.5-point lead. Keymer's nearest challenger, Arjun Erigaisi, was held to a draw by Dutch star Anish Giri, a setback for the Indian's title hopes with only two rounds to play. Elsewhere in the Masters, GM Nihal Sarin defeated GM Ray Robson, while GM Jorden van Foreest and GM V Pranav shared the spoils in a balanced contest. With two rounds remaining, Erigaisi will take on Gujrathi in his must-win penultimate match-up. Erigaisi also needs favourable results elsewhere to keep his title challenge alive. Liang, finding himself in a similar situation to Erigaisi, will tackle Giri.
