Hong Kong stocks head for 2-week low on Fed rate decision and China manufacturing data

A solid run for Hong Kong stocks showed signs of cracking, as the city's benchmark headed for a two-week low after the US Federal Reserve appeared resistant to an imminent interest rate cut and China's manufacturing sector shrank unexpectedly. The Hang Seng Index fell 1.3 per cent to 24,848.13 at 10.10am local time, poised for its lowest close since July 18. The Hang Seng Tech Index dropped 0.8 per cent. On the mainland, the CSI 300 Index slid 1.1 per cent and the Shanghai Composite Index retreated 0.8 per cent. Biotech firm Wuxi AppTec slumped 5.3 per cent to HK$106 after unveiling a share placement plan. Gold producer Zijin Mining Group fell 4.5 per cent to HK$21.30 and China Overseas Land and Investment dropped 4 per cent to HK$13.62. US stocks gave up most of their gains and Treasury yields edged higher after the Fed left its benchmark borrowing cost unchanged. Chair Jerome Powell said that no decision was made about easing monetary policies in September. Meanwhile, China's official manufacturing purchasing managers' index fell to 49.3 in July from 49.7 in June, the National Bureau of Statistics said on Thursday. The reading fell short of a consensus estimate of 49.7. A reading below 50 indicates contraction. Other major Asia-Pacific markets were mixed: Japan's Nikkei 225 climbed 0.8 per cent, South Korea's Kospi retreated 0.1 per cent and Australia's S&P/ASX 200 lost 0.3 per cent.

China's factory activity unexpectedly worsens as exports stumble

China's factory activity unexpectedly deteriorated in July to a six-month low despite a tariff truce with the US, as early signs emerge that exports are slowing and weak domestic demand persists. The official manufacturing purchasing managers' index was 49.3, versus 49.7 in June, the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) said on Thursday. The median estimate of economists surveyed by Bloomberg was 49.7. A reading below 50 indicates contraction. The non-manufacturing measure of activity in construction and services fell to 50.1 from 50.5 last month, according to the statistics office. That compared with a forecast of 50.2. In a statement accompanying the data release, the NBS blamed high temperatures, heavy rain, and flooding in some regions for disrupting the manufacturing industry, which it said entered 'the traditional off-season' in July. The PMI figures are the first official data available each month to provide a snapshot of the health of the Chinese economy.

US ‘made trade deals' with Thailand, Cambodia, Lutnick says

The United States has made trade deals with Cambodia and Thailand ahead of President Donald Trump 's August 1 tariff deadline, US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said on Wednesday. Lutnick, who made the comments during an interview with Fox News' Sean Hannity, provided no further details. 'It's unbelievable. And because he [Trump] uses trade, he gets to invite me on the phone, and I listened all day Saturday while he's calling Cambodia, Thailand,' he said. 'And what happens on Monday? They announce a truce. And here we did today. We made trade deals with Cambodia and Thailand .' On Monday, Thailand and Cambodia agreed to a truce after five days of clashes that killed at least 43 people on both sides, as a long-standing dispute over contested border temples boiled over into fighting on their 800km (500-mile) boundary. 'Numerous people were killed and I was dealing with two countries that we get along with very well, very different countries from certain standpoints. They've been fighting for 500 years intermittently. And, we solved that war … we solved it through trade,' Trump told reporters on Monday. That ceasefire is still holding despite both countries accusing each other of breaching the deal on Wednesday.
