New Satellite to Make Detailed Survey of Greenhouse Gas Emissions Across Entire Globe in 3 Days

To enhance the observation of greenhouse gases from space, the government will launch a new satellite in June. GOSAT-GW, the third in its series, is capable of performing observations across a plane rather than the current method of observing each point. This makes it possible to survey the earth's entire surface within three days.
The government will also strive to swiftly make public the analytical findings of the observations, with the use of AI, thus supporting the often-sluggish efforts of various countries to fight global warming.
The Environment Ministry launched its first greenhouse gas observing satellite, GOSAT, in 2009, and the second one in 2018 to measure atmospheric concentrations of carbon dioxide (CO2), methane and other gases.
Since the current GOSAT series satellites can only observe points of about 200 kilometers distance at a time, observations have been limited to the country level.
On the other hand, the GOSAT-GW can make observations across a wide plane in one go.
According to the National Institute for Environmental Studies (NIES), its sensors can observe an area of about 900 kilometers at a time, allowing a seamless survey of the entire globe. With its spatial resolution set to be up to 100-fold greater than the current satellites, the new satellite will enable city-level measurements of emissions.
The GOSAT-GW is also capable of measuring nitrogen dioxide (NO2), an air pollutant emitted by the combustion of fossil fuels at such facilities as thermal power plants, which is useful for estimating the possible sources of greenhouse gases and their amounts more accurately. The new satellite is capable of making simultaneous measurements of both CO2 and NO2, a world first.a
The monitored data will be analyzed by the NIES using AI and other methods, and the NIES aims to make the findings public online within two to three days.
The GOSAT-GW is scheduled to be mounted aboard the H2A rocket No. 50, to be launched by the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) on June 24.
Countries and regions must report their greenhouse gas emissions to the United Nations if they are members of the Paris Agreement, an international framework on global warming countermeasures.
Since last year, developing countries have also been included, but some countries are unable to prepare accurate data. Furthermore, the United States' announcement of its withdrawal from the agreement has raised concerns about delays in countermeasures.
The government has already provided emissions analysis results to five countries, including Mongolia and Kyrgyzstan, and aims to make satellite-based verification methods an international standardization.
'We want to support decarbonization efforts by countries and companies by disseminating objective data measured via satellite observations, both at home and abroad,' said Hiroshi Tanimoto, Director of the Earth System Division of the NIES.

Tamang contributes to an AI-powered early warning system that uses rainfall and ground movement data, local observations and satellite imagery to predict landslides up to weeks in advance, according to its developers at the University of Melbourne. From her home in Kimtang village in the hills of northwest Nepal, 29-year-old Tamang sends photos of the water level to experts in the capital Kathmandu, a five-hour drive to the south. "Our village is located in difficult terrain, and landslides are frequent here, like many villages in Nepal," Tamang told AFP. Every year during the monsoon season, floods and landslides wreak havoc across South Asia, killing hundreds of people. Nepal is especially vulnerable due to unstable geology, shifting rainfall patterns and poorly planned development. As a mountainous country, it is already "highly prone" to landslides, said Rajendra Sharma, an early warning expert at the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority. "And climate change is fuelling them further. Shifting rainfall patterns, rain instead of snowfall in high altitudes and even increase in wildfires are triggering soil erosion," Sharma told AFP. Landslides killed more than 300 people last year and were responsible for 70 percent of monsoon-linked deaths, government data shows. Tamang knows the risks first hand. When she was just five years old, her family and dozens of others relocated after soil erosion threatened their village homes. They moved about a kilometer uphill, but a strong 2015 earthquake left the area even more unstable, prompting many families to flee again. "The villagers here have lived in fear," Tamang said. "But I am hopeful that this new early warning system will help save lives." The landslide forecasting platform was developed by Australian professor Antoinette Tordesillas with partners in Nepal, Britain and Italy. Its name, SAFE-RISCCS, is an acronym of a complex title -- Spatiotemporal Analytics, Forecasting and Estimation of Risks from Climate Change Systems. "This is a low-cost but high-impact solution, one that's both scientifically informed and locally owned," Tordesillas told AFP. Professor Basanta Adhikari from Nepal's Tribhuvan University, who is involved in the project, said that similar systems were already in use in several other countries, including the United States and China. "We are monitoring landslide-prone areas using the same principles that have been applied abroad, adapted to Nepal's terrain," he told AFP. "If the system performs well during this monsoon season, we can be confident that it will work in Nepal as well, despite the country's complex Himalayan terrain." In Nepal, it is being piloted in two high-risk areas: Kimtang in Nuwakot district and Jyotinagar in Dhading district. Tamang's data is handled by technical advisers like Sanjaya Devkota, who compares it against a threshold that might indicate a landslide. "We are still in a preliminary stage, but once we have a long dataset, the AI component will automatically generate a graphical view and alert us based on the rainfall forecast," Devkota said. "Then we report to the community, that's our plan." The experts have been collecting data for two months, but will need a data set spanning a year or two for proper forecasting, he added. Eventually, the system will deliver a continuously updated landslide risk map, helping decision makers and residents take preventive actions and make evacuation plans. The system "need not be difficult or resource-intensive, especially when it builds on the community's deep local knowledge and active involvement", Tordesillas said. Asia suffered more climate and weather-related hazards than any other region in 2023, according to UN data, with floods and storms the most deadly and costly. And while two-thirds of the region have early warning systems for disasters in place, many other vulnerable countries have little coverage. In the last decade, Nepal has made progress on flood preparedness, installing 200 sirens along major rivers and actively involving communities in warning efforts. The system has helped reduce flooding deaths, said Binod Parajuli, a flood expert with the government's hydrology department. "However, we have not been able to do the same for landslides because predicting them is much more complicated," he said. "Such technologies are absolutely necessary if Nepal wants to reduce its monsoon toll." © 2025 AFP

A new Japanese satellite for measuring greenhouse gases, which was launched in June, is expected to contribute greatly to measures to ease global warming. The satellite, which was jointly developed by the Environment Ministry, the National Institute for Environmental Studies and other partners, is called the Global Observing SATellite for Greenhouse gases and Water cycle (GOSAT-GW), otherwise known by its nickname Ibuki GW. It can collect significantly more information than similar Japanese satellites. Past satellites that had the same purpose could only make observations at points about 200 kilometers apart. They were therefore limited to analyzing data on a country-by-country basis. Ibuki GW, on the other hand, has sensors that can observe greenhouse gases in 900-kilometer-wide belt zones, making it possible to obtain greenhouse gas data from the entire surface of Earth within three days and to analyze it at a city-by-city level. The satellite can observe nitrogen dioxide, a pollutant gas, in the air and estimate emission volumes with high accuracy based on the form of smoke discharged from thermal power plants and other data. Ibuki GW was launched in the early hours of June 29 and began communicating from orbit at an altitude of about 670 kilometers. It is expected to start transmitting data to international organizations by the end of this year. 'We will provide estimate results and other data to Asian countries and private companies,' said an official of the Environment Ministry at an international academic conference of satellite observations held in Takamatsu in June. 'To contribute to creating transparency with the data, we will verify emission reports that countries submit to the United Nations.' Among the topics discussed by the attendees at the conference were the moves of the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump, who has a negative stance when it comes to measures for dealing with global warming. Although Japan and the United States had been improving their observation technologies in a spirit of competition in the field, many U.S. researchers were absent from the conference this time. A senior NASA official said that budget cuts had meant that its young researchers could not obtain permission to travel to Japan to attend the conference. According to the U.S. budget bill for the 2026 fiscal year, which NASA disclosed, the funding allocated to two U.S. satellites dedicated to observing greenhouse gases was 'zero.' 'There can be neither studies nor measures utilizing the data without competition and mutual assistance with the United States,' said Akihiko Kuze, a former official of the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) and former project manager for Ibuki GW's predecessor. KAGOSHIMA — Hirakawa Zoo in Kagoshima has successfully bred Amami togenezumi, or Amami spiny rats, an endangered species. The rare rats are kept at eight facilities in Japan, and the zoo became the seventh facility to successfully breed them. The spiny rats are rodents that grow to lengths of 10 to 15 centimeters. Their fur includes characteristically needle-like hairs. They inhabit only Amami-Oshima Island in Kagoshima Prefecture and are nocturnal, feeding on acorns and insects. Unlike most mammals, their males lack the Y chromosome that ordinarily determines male sex. According to the zoo, five babies — three males and two females — were born. In mid-May, one female rat stopped coming out of her nest, prompting the zoo staff to observe her with a monitor. They discovered that the rat had given birth on April 26 and confirmed all five offspring on May 19. The mother rat and her offspring are all said to be healthy. The Environment Ministry believes that the number of Amami spiny rats decreased due to predation by mongooses and wildcats as well as the deterioration of their habitat caused by road construction that has divided forests. In 2017, the ministry partnered with universities and others to begin conservation activities. They transferred the spiny rats they captured to domestic zoos, including Hirakawa Zoo, which has been working to keep and breed the rats without exhibiting them.
