UFC on ABC 8 results: Curtis Blaydes squeaks by Rizvan Kuniev – but win came at potential cost
Curtis Blaydes is back in the win column, but at what cost?
On the UFC on ABC 8 main card Saturday, Blaydes (18-5 MMA, 14-5 UFC) defeated Rizvan Kuniev via split decision (29-28, 28-29, 29-28). The event took place at Baku Crystal Hall in Baku, Azerbaijan.
The fight was competitive yet relatively uneventful. Kuniev, who made his UFC debut, was not out of place. After a strong first round from Blaydes, the hulking Russian took it to the perennial American contender.
While one judge scored it for Kuniev, the other two leaned Blaydes. The closeness of the fight could be due to injury, as Blayes revealed during his in-cage interview that his left MCL "popped" in the first round.
Should he be granted a relatively clean bill of health, Blaydes said he wants to fight Ciryl Gane next. Despite the divisional longevity for both men, they've never fought.
With the victory, Blaydes bounces back into the win column in his first competition since July 2024 when he was finished in one minute by Tom Aspinall.
Kuniev, 33, comes up short in his long-awaited UFC debut. His debut, including twice booked vs. Blaydes, was canceled three times prior to Saturday.

Dana White: Jon Jones is retired, Tom Aspinall new UFC heavyweight champion
The Jon Jones situation finally has come to a head: He no longer is the UFC's heavyweight champion. UFC CEO Dana White said Saturday at the UFC on ABC 8 post-fight news conference that Jones decided to retire. The promotion had been looking for him to book a title unification bout against interim champ Tom Aspinall (15-3 MMA, 8-1 UFC). Advertisement "Jon Jones called us last night and retired. Jon Jones is officially retired. Tom Aspinall is the heavyweight champion of the UFC," White said Saturday in Baku, Azerbaijan. Former UFC light heavyweight champion Jones won the vacant heavyweight title in March 2023 after more than three years removed from the sport. He beat Stipe Miocic to defend the title in November 2024. But now he leaned into the narrative that he was ducking the Aspinall fight, and even said he was keen on White bringing Francis Ngannou back to the UFC to fight him. Aspinall recently declared himself the rightful titleholder since Jones continued to delay a matchup. There was growing discontent in the MMA community over Jones' apparent unwillingness to line up a fight with Aspinall, to the point there was a petition urging the UFC to strip him of his title. Now the promotion's brass doesn't have to make that decision because Jones made it for them. White has said Jones is the pound-for-pound greatest fighter in MMA history. What this decision will do for Jones' legacy remains to be seen, of course. Stay tuned to MMA Junkie for more on this story. More UFC heavyweight championship fight during the UFC 309 event at Madison Square Garden on November 16, 2024 in New York City. (Photo by Chris Unger/Zuffa LLC) Aspinall won the interim UFC heavyweight crown in November 2023 with a knockout victory over Sergei Pavlovich at UFC 295. Aspinall took that fight on short notice when the original main event for that card, Jon Jones vs. Stipe Miocic for Jones's heavyweight title was scrapped following an injury to Jones. Despite Aspinall winning the interim crown, UFC CEO Dana White remained steadfast in saying that Jones vs. Miocic was the fight to make. That fight did not take place until November 2024. Jones held on to his belt that night, beating Miocic by TKO in the third round. By that time, Aspinall had already defended his interim crown, scoring a first-round knockout win over Curtis Blaydes at UFC 304 in July 2024. Aspinall, who has not fought since he defeated Blaydes, had been waiting for the title unification bout with Jones since Jones's win over Miocic in November. In late April, Aspinall became the longest-serving UFC interim champion, topping the 535-day reign of Renan Barao, who defended his interim title twice before being named undisputed champion. We will have more on Jon Jones, Tom Aspinall and the UFC heavyweight title as news becomes available.

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Former Formula 1 driver Daniel Ricciardo is under fire from fans after making a controversial social media post. Since leaving the F1 grid, Ricciardo has remained silent. He stepped away from the sport and the spotlight in totality. He broke his silence on June 18, opting to release a controversial advertisement on his X (formerly Twitter) account. Ricciardo partnered with the Australian sports betting company Dabble. Josh Allen #17 of the Buffalo Bills and Formula 1 driver Daniel Ricciardo pose for a photo before a game against the Miami Dolphins at Highmark Stadium on November 3, 2024 in Orchard Park, New York. More Photo by TimothyHe announced a competition that will have a winner and a guest who will travel from an English airport to the United States for an American football weekend extravaganza. The prize offers flights, a three-night stay, VIP tickets to the tailgate party, and a meet-and-greet with the driver. The contest is named The Ultimate Texas Tailgate with Daniel Ricciardo. To enroll, people have to create an account on the Dabble app. I've given retirement a crack, but It's not for me. So, I've teamed up with the legends at Dabble to start a Tailgate business... Check it out at What are you really gambling with? For free and confidential support call 1800 858 858 or visit… — Daniel Ricciardo (@danielricciardo) June 18, 2025 All over the world, sports gambling is growing as more areas continue to legalize it. In the United States, sports betting is everywhere, essentially inescapable for a sports fan. As the industry grows, people are becoming more and more aware of gambling addictions and the risks of making them more accessible. The aftermath of Ricciardo's announcement was a wave of negative comments under the post, many of which were disappointed by his promotion of a gambling company. "Would have supported the tailgate business idea without the direct link to a betting company, man. Disappointed," a user commented. "What a shame. You're shilling for a gambling company. JFC. Surely you don't need the money that badly," another said. "Seriously mate? Money that tight is it? Of all the things you choose to put your name and face on you chose gambling? So bloody disappointing," a third added. "Yikes! Considering Aussies gamblers have the highest losses per capita in the world and a high rate of teenagers on gambling sites, this isn't it DR," a person posted. "Come on mate I'm a massive fan but this isn't at all something good to put your name to. Gambling destroys lives, surely there's better things to work with," a fifth person said. Ricciardo is far from the only athlete to take money from a gambling company, but his set of fans have shared their disappointment over his willingness to promote the vice. The Australian racer left F1 back in 2024 after being replaced during the season by Liam Lawson at Racing Bulls. Red Bull Racing gave him another opportunity with the team in 2023, hoping he would beat out teammate Yuki Tsunoda and rebuild his confidence, but it never clicked. After several races, the higher-ups at Red Bull decided to give Lawson a look, leaving Ricciardo on the outside looking in. Since leaving, Ricciardo has promoted his wine company and clothing brand while staying away from the limelight until now. Given the negative reaction, it will be interesting to see if he continues to advertise Dabble or calls an end to the tailgate party.
