2025 Big 12 Head Coach Rankings: Preseason College Football Preview

Miami Herald2 days ago
Just like the entire Big 12 going into the season, trying to figure out which coaches are the best right now - and which are at the bottom of the rankings - was mostly a coin flip. It's a league loaded with rising teams that could all pull off an Arizona State shocker of last year, and that's partly because each team has a big-time head coach.
Whether it's Scott Frost going back to UCF, Rich Rodriguez returning to West Virginia, or all the good coaches who rocked at other places and continue to get up to speed at their Big 12 spots, the league has accomplished coaches. How are we supposed to rank them going into the season? We'll cut Kyle Whittingham and Mike Gundy some slack after shockingly off years, acknowledge the high-risers, the under-appreciated, and ...We're doing this by feel, past greatness, tenure, upside, everything. Keep in mind that we'll probably change most of this wildly after the year, but going into the 2025 season ... - Predicting every Big 12 game

NCAA basketball tournament won't expand in 2026, still possible for 2027

March Madness will not expand − for now. NCAA senior vice president of basketball Dan Gavitt announced on Aug. 4 the men's and women's basketball NCAA Tournament will keep its current format for the upcoming season, with the possibility of expansion happening the following year. The announcement means the 2026 NCAA Tournament will remain at 68 teams. 'Expanding the tournament fields is no longer being contemplated for the 2026 men's and women's basketball championships. However, the committees will continue conversations on whether to recommend expanding to 72 or 76 teams in advance of the 2027 championships," Gavitt said. One of the most divisive topics in college hoops, the expansion of the tournament had been picking up steam in recent months by the high powers of college sports. At a Big 12 meeting in May, NCAA president Charlie Baker told reporters the NCAA had "good conversation" with its media partners about the possibility of increasing the number of teams in the field and wanted a final determination in the coming months. On July 10, Gavitt said no decision was made on tournament expansion after it was 'discussed at length' during meetings for the committees. While those in power had building toward expansion, the possibility of it has drawn the ire of college basketball enthusiasts, with the common belief adding more teams ruins what is considered a perfect tournament, with any and all tweaks unwarranted. The men's tournament expanded from 53 teams to 64 in 1985, and the format stood until 2011, when the First Four was introduced and grew the field from 65 to 68 teams. On the women's side, the bracket increased from 48 teams to 64 in 1994, and the First Four was also implemented in 2022. When the First Four was expanded, it meant more at-large selections and conference tournament champions had to play their way into participating in the first round of the tournament. It led to Cinderella runs to the Final Four like Virginia Commonwealth in 2011 and UCLA in 2021. Dan Gavitt releases statement on NCAA Tournament expansion timeline, status for 2026

The NCAA's Dan Gavitt announced that the NCAA Tournament expansion is off the table for the 2026 edition. The expectation is to resume talks for 2027 and beyond, should expansion happen for March Madness. 'Expanding the tournament fields is no longer being contemplated for the 2026 men's and women's basketball championships,' Gavitt said in a statement. 'However, the committees will continue conversations on whether to recommend expanding to 72 or 76 teams in advance of the 2027 championships.' ESPN's Pete Thamel previously in late-June decision could be coming 'in the next few weeks' as the meetings approached. Ultimately, no decisions came down in July and now, Gavitt made it official moving forward. During the Big 12's spring meetings in May, NCAA president Charlie Baker said the goal would be to expand the tournament next year if that was the decision. He also confirmed the idea of a 72- or 76-team bracket being an option amid the conversations. 'That would be the goal — to try and do this for next year, which is why the window to actually negotiate it will probably end sometime early summer,' Baker told Front Office Sports' David Rumsey. '… We've been talking about 72 and 76. Those have been the numbers the basketball committee's talked about. It would obviously be one or the other, won't be more.' Following Baker's comments, SEC commissioner Greg Sankey said the idea of NCAA Tournament expansion during his conference's spring meetings in Destin. He said things 'didn't really go anywhere' other than a brief mention. 'I introduced the issue to our men's basketball coaches, which I think we've talked about with that group before. I would guess then, given the other issues we had on our plate, that conversation maybe lasted five minutes,' Sankey said. 'My points to them were, this is still a work in progress. 'I didn't know that there was going to be kind of a press gathering. This is not a criticism. Charlie Baker spoke about tournament expansion, I think, the day after our basketball coaches gathered. I mentioned it to our women's basketball coaches as well briefly. It didn't really go anywhere.'
