
Sabah Government backs wildlife film to boost tourism
KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah government has expressed its support for the forthcoming wildlife feature film Agatis: A Borneo Story.
Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Seri Christina Liew said her ministry, through the Sabah Wildlife Department, would provide assistance to ensure the success of the 90-minute film, which she saidclaimed had the potential to enhance wildlife tourism in the state.
'Agatis: A Borneo Story is a feature film that highlights the plight of the endangered Bornean pygmy elephants, and would be the first film in Malaysia to be shot in the vicinity of these majestic creatures,' she said after attending a presentation about the movie on Monday (June 23).
Also present was the state's wildlife department director, Mohd Soffian Abu Bakar.
The movie would feature two baby elephants: Agatis, a four-year-old female, and Aki, a two-year-old male, both from the Borneo Elephant Sanctuary (BES) in the Lower Kinabatangan Wildlife Sanctuary.

Agatis: A Borneo Story follows the journey of two young orphans, a boy named Dhiren and Agatis, a Bornean pygmy elephant. Together, they form a unique bond in the enchanting Bornean jungle and unite to protect Agatis's species from poachers.
Its director and producer, Jeanette Chong Tze Ling, said she intends to screen the movie in cinemas and at international film festivals.
She also thanked the ministry and the department for their support.
When asked about casting plans, Chong said Sandakan was prioritised due to its proximity to Kinabatangan.
'We're planning an open casting for children in Sandakan this July. We're also open to involving more local NGOs and communities in Kinabatangan,' she added.
Filming is expected to begin once funding is secured, with a target date of mid-August or September.

She said the contribution from the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Environment and its agency, Sabah Tourism Board, (STB) is in aid of the Friends of Sea Turtles Education & Research (Foster) Walai Penyu, a sea turtle conservation project in Libaran. Advertisement 'By integrating music, tourism, culture and marine conservation through events such as Sepilok Jazz and Bakat Sepilok Jazz, Foster demonstrates that sea turtles conservation can be celebrated in creative and inclusive ways. On the just-concluded 2nd Edition of Bakat Sepilok Jazz that had attracted international contestants, Liew noted that this competition is fast becoming a vital platform for emerging musicians to gain global recognition. Yee thanked the Minister for the strategic collaboration and ministry support for the organisation of both the 4th Edition of Sepilok Jazz and the 2nd Edition of Bakat Sepilok Jazz. 'There is growing international interest in Sepilok Jazz, so we are targeting 3,000 visitors this time around. I hope future editions will attract even broader participation,' he enthused. According to Yee, its 4th Edition will feature world-class acts from Singapore, Germany, Thailand and Korea. This year's stellar line-up includes Jeremy Monteiro All Star Quartet feat. Tony Lakatos (Singapore/Germany), Fleche D'Or Swing Quartet (Germany), and Seoul Fizz (Korea), alongside Malaysian talents Cris Aban Trio, Wan G, Sonny B & The 1, Zizi Safira, and Appy Tots. Foster is a Sabah based non-profit organisation established in 2013, dedicated to the conservation of sea turtles, particularly around Pulau Libaran in Sandakan. Its core initiatives include turtle monitoring, hatchery management, community education, and public outreach. Since its inception, Foster has released tens of thousands of hatchlings into the sea, fostering strong partnerships with local communities, government agencies, private sector stakeholders, and eco-conscious travellers to protect these endangered marine species. Sabah govt prioritises multi-ethnic cultural heritage preservation
TUARAN: Preserving the cultural heritage of Sabah's diverse ethnic groups remains a priority for the state government, which is committed to promoting and elevating local cultural treasures, said Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor. He said the four-day Bajau Samah Cultural Festival, which concluded today, serves to elevate the state's cultural heritage to greater heights while enhancing Sabah's image on the world stage. 'With 35 ethnic groups and 217 sub-ethnic groups in Sabah, our society is truly diverse and multicultural in the Malaysian context. Yet, the people of Sabah continue to live in harmony with a strong spirit of unity, in line with the slogan 'Unity in Diversity'. 'We hold this festival annually to promote the culture of the Bajau Samah community. While we celebrate Bajau Samah culture, other ethnic traditions also contribute to making our state harmonious in diversity, and we will continue to preserve them forever,' he told reporters after attending the festival's opening ceremony in Lok Batik here today. The festival was officiated by Sabah Yang Dipertua Negeri Tun Musa Aman, who was accompanied by his wife, Toh Puan Faridah Tussin, and Sabah Deputy Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Datuk Khairul Firdaus Akbar Khan. Hajiji said safeguarding culture is a core commitment of the state government, given Sabah's wealth of ethnic and cultural diversity. He added that the festival also strengthens ties among the local community regardless of race or religion, while serving as a platform to nurture and preserve new talents in the arts and cultural fields. KUCHING (Aug 7): A Ministry of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts delegation visited Expo 2025 Osaka in conjunction with Sarawak Week at the Malaysia Pavillion yesterday (Aug 6). Minister Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah led the delegation accompanied by deputy ministers Datuk Sebastian Ting and Datuk Dr Ripin Lamat. 'The delegation's objective was to enhance Sarawak's international profile by showcasing the state's rich cultural heritage, dynamic tourism sector, and the Sarawak-Malaysia My Second Home (S-MM2H) programme. 'Held from Aug 4-10, Sarawak Week provided a strategic platform to introduce Sarawak to a global audience,' the ministry said in a statement.
