Man dies trying to cross English Channel to the UK

A man has died after suffering a cardiac arrest on board a boat attempting to reach the UK, French authorities have confirmed. A boat attempting to reach English shores turned back towards Equihen beach in northern France on Saturday morning.
When the boat arrived at the beach, a man was found on board in cardiac arrest, the Pas-de-Calais department's sub-prefecture told the PA news agency.
Despite emergency services intervening at the scene, the man died soon after.
According to UK Home Office provisional statistics, almost 24,000 people have arrived on small boats in the UK in 2025. An investigation is under way under the authority of the prosecutor to determine the circumstances of the man's death, the French authorities confirmed.

Potential victims of modern slavery in United Kingdom at record high
DPA London The number of potential victims of modern slavery referred to Britain's Home Office is at a record level, having risen by almost a third in a year, new figures show. There were 5,690 people referred between April and June this year — a 7% increase on the previous three-month period and a 32% rise from the same quarter last year. Data published earlier this year showed a record high for the whole of 2024, when a total of 19,125 potential victims in the UK were referred to the Home Office, up from 16,990 the previous year. The latest UK government data, published on Thursday, gives figures for the three months from April to June 2025. The Home Office said the 5,690 potential victims of modern slavery referred in the latest three-month period is the highest in a single quarter since the national referral mechanism (NRM) began in 2009. Almost three-quarters of all referrals were male - 74% - while 26% were female. Among child referrals, 79% (or 1,364) were boys while 20% (or 351) were girls. The Home Office said in the latest quarter males most often reported criminal or labour exploitation while females most often reported sexual the most recent period, 457 county lines referrals were flagged, of which the majority were for boys. There were 11,547 cases which had been issued a positive initial decision, known as a reasonable grounds decision, but were awaiting a final conclusive grounds decision. This was down from 14,075 at the end of the previous quarter and 23,586 cases at the end of June 2024. The government has vowed to clear the backlog of cases awaiting a conclusive grounds decision by December 2026. The average (median) time cases had to await a conclusive grounds decision once the initial reasonable grounds decision was issued stood at 304 days at the end of June, down from a 474-day wait at the end of the previous quarter. Independent anti-slavery commissioner Eleanor Lyons argued the system as it stands is not working for victims. She said: 'Today's figures show that a record numbers of victims of modern slavery are being exploited on our streets and in our communities. The Home Office has been contacted for comment.

Man dies after falling at Oasis concert
DPA London A man has died after falling during an Oasis concert at Wembley Stadium. Witnesses described the 'horrendous' scenes after the man fell from an upper tier during the band's reunion tour on Saturday. The Metropolitan Police have said that the man was aged in his 40s. Despite the tragic events on Saturday, organizers said the band's performance on Sunday will 'go ahead as planned.' In a statement, the Metropolitan Police said: 'A man - aged in his 40s - was found with injuries consistent with a fall. 'He was sadly pronounced dead at the scene. The stadium was busy and we believe it is likely a number of people witnessed the incident, or may knowingly or unknowingly have caught it on mobile phone video footage. If you have any information that could help us to confirm what happened, please call 101.' A witness told the Daily Mail newspaper: 'It was horrendous. 'The guy fell from a balcony. Paramedics came rushing over. There was a lot of screaming and shouting. 'It was a big fall. God knows how it happened. It was so tragic.' The fall happened during the latest in a run of stadium shows for the band's sell-out Live '25 reunion tour - their first since splitting in 2009.

27 killed in Russia's attacks on Ukraine
Agencies Kiev At least 27 people, including 16 inmates and a pregnant woman, have been killed in Russian air attacks on mostly southeastern Ukraine, according to President Volodymyr Zelensky and regional officials. The attacks came overnight on Tuesday, a day after United States President Donald Trump set Russia a new deadline of '10 or 12 days' to reach a peace deal in its war on Ukraine or face tough new sanctions, shortening a 50-day deadline he had set earlier this month. Ivan Fedorov, head of the military administration in Zaporizhia, on Tuesday said Russia carried out eight overnight air attacks on his region alone, hitting a prison near the city of Zaporizhzhia. 'Russia bombed a penal colony near Zaporizhzhia overnight – 16 killed, 35 injured. Civilians continue to suffer. Another blatant war crime,' Fedorov said in English on X. Zelensky said a pregnant woman was among three people killed in a Russian missile attack on the city of Kamianske in the central region of Dnipropetrovsk, targeting a hospital. Also in Dnipropetrovsk, a person was killed and several were wounded in the Synelnykove district, according to Serhiy Lysak, head of the Dnipropetrovsk military administration. In a separate attack on the village of Velyka Mykhailivka in the Odesa region on Monday night, a '75-year-old woman was killed. A 68-year-old man was wounded. A private house was damaged,' Lysak said on Telegram. Russian forces also struck a grocery store in a village in the northeastern Kharkiv region, killing five and wounding three civilians, police were cited as saying by the AP news agency. Authorities in the southern Kherson region reported one civilian killed and three wounded over the past 24 hours, the AP report said. Reacting to the developments, Andriy Yermak, a senior aide to President Zelensky, wrote on social media: 'Russian President [Vladimir] Putin's regime, which also issues threats against the United States through some of its mouthpieces, must face economic and military blows that strip it of the capacity to wage war.' Ukraine's Air Force said Russia had launched 37 drones and two missiles overnight, adding that its air defence systems had downed 32 of the drones. In Russia's southern Rostov region, multiple Ukrainian drone attacks killed one person, according to Russian authorities. Russia's Ministry of Defence, which reports only how many drones were destroyed, not how many Ukraine launched, said its defence units downed a total of 74 drones overnight, including 22 over the Rostov region. 'A car was damaged on Ostrovsky Street. Unfortunately, the driver who was in it died,' Yury Slyusar, acting governor of the Rostov region, said in a post on Telegram. He said the attack had targeted several places, including Salsk, Kamensk-Shakhtinsky, Volgodonsk, Bokovsky, Tarasovsky and Slyusar. Drone debris also fell on Salsk train station, damaging a freight train and passenger train, with passengers being evacuated, Slyusar added. Power was disrupted at the station, forcing the suspension of train traffic, Russian Railways said on Telegram. No casualties were reported. There was no immediate comment from Ukraine, which has often said its attacks inside Russia are in response to Moscow's relentless strikes on Ukraine.
