Alejandro G Inarritu teases 'brutal comedy' with Tom Cruise
Tom Cruise's next movie is a "brutal comedy".
The 62-year-old actor is currently promoting 'Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning' but he's also been busy working on director Alejandro G. Iñárritu's upcoming film, which is tentatively titled 'July' and has just wrapped shooting in London.
The Oscar-winning director teased the film is "insane" and promised audiences will be surprised.
He told The Hollywood Reporter: 'All I can say is it is a brutal, wild comedy of catastrophic proportions. It's insane.
"It's scary and funny and beautiful. I know comedy is not what people expect from me, or Tom, and making this film was terrifying for me, but I don't like to repeat myself, and every film should scare you a little."
The 61-year-old filmmaker praised Tom for his "total commitment" to the role and compared the tone to that of his 2014 movie 'Birdman'.
He added: "I felt Birdman was a comedy, a dark comedy, and this one was challenging like that.
"And Tom makes me laugh every single day. He has this total commitment, this total madness.'
'July' will also star Sandra Huller and the Mexican filmmaker has admired the 'Anatomy of a Fall' actress' work for some time.
He said: "'I've loved Sandra since 'Toni Erdmann'. I met her here in Cannes that year [2017] and have been wanting to work with her ever since."
Alejandro plans to begin editing the film - which will also feature the likes of Jesse Plemons, Riz Ahmed, Emma D'Arcy, Sophie Wilde, Michael Stuhlbarg and John Goodman - "next week" and 'July' is scheduled for release next autumn.
Meanwhile, the filmmaker's breakthrough work, 'Amores Perros' - which starred Gael Garcia Bernal - is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year and it still means a lot to Alejandro.
He said: 'Back then, in Mexico, we made maybe seven movies a year.
'There was no real national cinema. If you made one film, that was it. That was your shot. And I poured everything into that film.
"All the contradictions, the rage, the love, the chaos of Mexico City — it's all in there. That's why it's messy. That's why it's alive.'
As well a marking the anniversary with a visual installation set to exhibit in Milan, Mexico City and Los Angeles later this year, 'Amores Perros' will also be rereleased into cinemas.
The director said: 'So that young people can see it on the big screen, not just on one of these [phones]."

‘We've got a pretty good story': John Wick director Chad Stahelski teases Chapter 5
Chad Stahelski has a "pretty good story" for John Wick: Chapter 5. After the titular hitman's apparent death in 2023's John Wick: Chapter 4, Lionsgate has greenlit a fifth outing for Keanu Reeves' assassin, and Stahelski, 56, has teased the script he and scribe Mike Finch wrote is coming along nicely - though will only go ahead with the movie if they "crack" the story. Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter about continuing John Wick's story after his supposed end in Chapter 4, the filmmaker said: "I'm not going to lie to you, it's a bit of a conundrum. Me and Mike Finch — the writer on 4 who's also writing 5 — we've got a pretty good story that I think is cool. Once we have a 50-page book, and if we're feeling it, we'll sit with Keanu and shape this thing. "Look, everybody seems to want it. It's a matter of whether we crack it. We're actively working on it. It's just … is it going to be satisfying?" Stahelski added that while Lionsgate wants John Wick: Chapter 5, the sequel isn't locked in just yet. He explained: "The studio would very much will it into existence, I'm sure, at some point. Look, they've been great and they've asked us to really try and we have a really good couple of ideas and we're going to try." The filmmaker added that even if John Wick: Chapter 5 ultimately doesn't come to fruition, he and his creative team will likely discover plenty of other ideas that could be reworked for a spin-off in the process of developing the movie, such as the Ana de Armas-starring Ballerina. Stahelski said: "If we go down the road of John Wick 5 and build this story and decide this isn't right, there are probably going to be 10 other things we'll discover that we'll use for other things. "It's a great creative exercise. It's being in the room riffing with people we love. That's nothing but wins." Ballerina - which also stars Norman Reedus, Ian McShane, Lorenza Izzo, Anjelica Huston and the late Lance Reddick - follows Eve Maccaro, a deadly assassin who seeks vengeance for her family's murder and unleashes her fury against those who wronged her. The film is also set to include John Wick as an adversary of Macarro's, though Stahelski revealed this wasn't always in the plan, and he was initially "kind of against" bringing in Reeves' assassin. He explained: "That wasn't in the original script. To be honest, I was kind of against it. But I do see the benefit and we wanted to help out [director Len Wiseman]. "We had just opened John Wick 4 and it was huge. He couldn't go back to the model of the first John Wick and do a little $18 million indie thing and try to build it up. "In order to stay in the same game, you got to give him a fighting chance. And the easiest way to transfer that over — at least, from the studio point of view — was have Wick in Ballerina in a special timeline."

Kristen Bell refuses to work outside Los Angeles because she "can't physically operate in the world" if she is unable to spend time with her family. The 44-year-old actress is mother to two daughters - Lincoln, 12, and Delta, 10 - with her husband Dax Shepard and Kristen has revealed she won't take on any acting project that will require her to leave town because she needs to be able to see her partner and her kids every day. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, she explained: "I can't physically operate in the world if I don't have some part of the morning or evening with my family. I am so rooted in that life, and I can explain it best by saying, I like being an actress, but I love being Kristen. "And if I had to choose between the two, I would quit this career in a heartbeat." Kristen explained she made the decision after Lincoln was born and she's stuck to LA-based projects ever since. She added: "About 12 years ago, because my oldest is 12, I was like: 'What if I just tried to see if I had leverage to be like, I'm not going to shoot outside of L.A. anymore?' "No matter how good the director is or how good the script is, I won't do it. I wouldn't care enough. I'm not trying to do the Revenant 2 in wherever they shot that. I don't need to do that. It wouldn't fulfill me. "So, I said: 'Don't even send me anything if it's not shooting in L.A. or if it's not early enough in the development that I can say: 'We have to shoot in L.A.' and I've been really, really lucky. "But that does bleed in a little to the, when I get there in the morning, I will absolutely compartmentalize and shut that off and I'm never trying to bring baggage to set unless it's happy, playful, fun stuff that would excite us. "But then, at the end of the day, I'm not really here for: 'Let's do a couple [takes] more just for us'. If we've got it, I need to go home and reconnect with my family because otherwise I can't come in tomorrow."
