FC Kairat players began their long journey to Glasgow with a ringing sensation in their ears.A few days after scraping past Slovakia's Slovan Bratislava to set up a Champions League play-off against Celtic, they tossed away a 2-0 lead against Yelimay, losing 3-2 and with it their place at the top of the Kazakhstan Premier League. It was their first home defeat in eight games and that ringing was brought on by the words of head coach Rafael Urakhtin, who was furious at such a capitulation with just two months left of the Kazakh season."It was a disappointing defeat for us," he lamented. "I believe that a team fighting for the championship has no right to make such mistakes. We made childish mistakes. "We have no time to grieve, we fly to Scotland for the next match."Plenty to ponder, then, for the Kairat squad as they made their 3,500-mile trip west from Almaty, which lies mere hours from the Chinese border. It has already been a fairly arduous adventure on the pitch for the reigning champions of a country that Celtic have got to know well over the last decade or so.Kairat overcame Slovenians Olimpija before coming from two goals down at the midway point of the tie in the second qualifying round against Finnish side KuPS.Then came the drama in Bratislava, as they emerged via a shoot-out amidst a raucous atmosphere in the Slovakian capital after going behind in the first half.
Teenager Satpaev is main threat
In 2002, Uefa granted a request from the Kazakh FA to take part in European competition despite the largest landlocked country in the world sitting in mid-Asia.Celtic have visited three times previously, including twice at this stage of Champions League qualifying, with memorable match-ups against Shakhter Karagandy and Astana.Kairat have had Scottish experience themselves, having knocked Aberdeen out of the Europa League a decade ago.Returning to the qualifying tournament in their bid to get back to Europe's top table is not ideal for Scotland's champions against the backdrop of a fading coefficient, but Brendan Rodgers' men will be big favourites. However, the warnings are there that Kairat may be no pushovers. The biggest danger to Celtic's ambitions comes in the shape of a 17-year-old.Dastan Satpaev has a big-money transfer to Chelsea to look forward to but is too young to make that move this year as per Fifa rules. He celebrated his 17th in Bratislava and will head to west London as soon as he turns 18 next August.Satpaev has 22 goal involvements for Kairat this season, scoring 13 of them himself, including three in the qualifiers. And despite his 5ft 5in frame, has a massive future on his hands whilst already a full international.Belarus international Valeriy Gromyko is another important player and is likely to be involved against Scotland in the upcoming World Cup qualifier in Hungary. This is not a fixture Celtic will be intimidated by, apart from the length of journey they will undertake for next week's return. Although the last time Callum McGregor and James Forrest were in Kazakhstan, it was for a Scotland team on the receiving end of a 3-0 humbling in 2019.Symbolically, the sight of Astana playing in the group stage of the Champions League in 2015 was massive for Kazakh football, with many feeling it justified Uefa's decision to grant them access. But, it remains the only time a club from the country has participated in the tournament. Kairat are desperate to become the second.

Champions League: Build up as Celtic host Kazakh side Kairat in play-off round

Update: Date: 19:17 BST Title: Rodgers hits game 800 Content: Celtic v Kairat (20:00) Tonight's game is Brendan Rodgers' 800th as a manager. He's managed more matches at Celtic than at any other club - 279 to be exact. Rodgers has won four Scottish Premiership titles, three Scottish Cups, and four League Cups across two spells at Parkhead. He also has a win percentage of 69.5%. Not bad, is it? His current contract expires at the end of this season... Update: Date: 19:14 BST Title: Who is Kairat's Chelsea-bound teenager? Update: Date: 19:08 BST Title: The stakes couldn't be much higher Content: Celtic v Kairat (20:00) Kheredine IdessaneBBC Scotland at Celtic Park The most important home game of Celtic's season? Almost certainly, yes. Domestic dominance is one thing, but the club, and for sure the manager, have made no bones about the desire to be properly competitive in Europe. They ticked that box last season and then some, coming within a minute or so of beating Bayern Munich away. Since that match in the Allianz, there has been a bit of a drop-off from the Scottish champions, with players leaving and those who stayed hitting a bit of a plateau. How to kick on again? Qualify for the Champions League, unlock another bounty in excess of £40m and spend the last few days of the transfer window doing the deals Brendan Rodgers had hoped would already be completed by now. A poor result tonight could scupper all that, hence the importance of this game to Celtic's entire season. I would expect the current crop of players to hear the Champions League anthem, remember the levels the side reached against Bayern, RB Leipzig and Slovan Bratislava, and give themselves at least a two-goal cushion for next week's arduous trip to Almaty. A bigger advantage than that may even allow the transfer wheeling and dealing to begin. Update: Date: 19:05 BST Title: Idah starts amid six Celtic changes Content: Celtic v Kairat (20:00) Brendan Rodgers makes six changes to the Celtic team that started Friday's 4-1 League Cup win over Falkirk. Kasper Schmeichel is back in goal, Cameron Carter-Vickers and Liam Scales start at centre-back, Benjamin Nygren is in midfield with Reo Hatate, and Adam Idah is in at centre-forward. Viljami Sinisalo, Auston Trusty, Dane Murray, Luke McCowan, Arne Engels and Johnny Kenny all drop to the bench. For the visitors, Chelsea-bound teenager Dastan Satpaev starts. All the (lack of) transfer noise needs to be parked as Celtic head into a crucial two-legged encounter with Kazakhstan champions Kairat. That said, all that noise will come back louder than ever if Brendan Rodgers' side fall at this hurdle. That's potentially for another day. For now, let's get straight to the team news at Celtic Park...

Yoane Wissa: Brentford reject Newcastle's new £40m bid for forward

Newcastle United have suffered further frustration in the transfer market after their latest bid for Brentford's Yoane Wissa was rejected. An offer worth £35million, plus £5million in add-ons, has been turned down by the London club. Wissa had previously been the subject of a bid up to £30million. The development is likely to infuriate the 28-year-old forward, who is believed to have held talks with the Brentford owner, Matthew Benham, earlier this week in an attempt to secure an exit. Wissa had already removed links to Brentford from his Instagram account and flew home early from their pre-season camp in Portugal as he tried to force through a move to St James' Park. While the attacker, who joined Brentford in 2021, has been in training, he is determined to move to the North East with the prospect of playing in the Champions League for Eddie Howe's side an obvious appeal. Newcastle have suffered a series of setbacks in the transfer market, missing out on players such as Benjamin Sesko and Hugo Ekitike, rejections that have been played out alongside the saga over the future of Alexander Isak. Isak posted on Instagram on Tuesday that he saw no future at the club amid claims of broken promises, with Newcastle subsequently releasing a statement of their own denying his claims. Liverpool had a £110million bid for the Sweden international rejected. Brentford have signed Dango Ouattara from Bournemouth for a club-record £42.5million fee and DR Congo international Wissa hoped that would smooth his departure. Instead, the uncertainty over his own future now rumbles on with Newcastle left to consider their next move as they look to replace Callum Wilson, who left the club after the expiry of his contract. Wilson, 33, has since moved to West Ham United. Nottingham Forest are closing in on a deal for the former Aston Villa midfielder Douglas Luiz. Nuno Espírito Santo's side have accelerated their transfer activity in the past week and the Brazil international is set to be the latest player to move to the City Ground after a loan deal was agreed with Juventus. The head coach is keen to strengthen his midfield as the club prepare for European football for the first time in 30 years. Omari Hutchinson and James McAtee were presented to the crowd before Sunday's 3-1 win over Brentford, having been signed from Ipswich Town and Manchester City respectively, while Forest also completed a deal for the French striker, Arnaud Kalimuendo, from Rennes on Monday. The deal for Douglas Luiz is understood to include an obligation to buy based on the number of appearances he makes. The 27-year-old had a difficult debut season at Juventus and was even tipped to leave the club in the January window after only six months in Serie A. Villa reluctantly sold him last summer for €50million (about £43million) to ensure they did not breach the Premier League's Profitability and Sustainability Rules. But he only started in three matches in the league for his new side and six times in all competitions from his 27 appearances. The defensive midfielder made 204 appearances in five years at Villa and was key to them qualifying for the Champions League under Unai Emery with a fourth-placed finish in 2023-24. Forest had also been keen on Rico Lewis but the full back now looks set to sign a new contract at Manchester City. Forest were hopeful of agreeing a double deal for Lewis and McAtee. But while the latter was at the City Ground on Sunday, Lewis was impressing for Pep Guardiola's side against Wolverhampton Wanderers the previous day. The 20-year-old England international was left out of the FA Cup final squad in May which had raised question marks over his long-term future but the academy graduate has been committed to the club and is set to sign a new long-term deal. While it has yet to be fully agreed there is hope of a resolution soon after talks accelerated earlier this week. Speaking after the 3-0 win against Wolves, Lewis said: 'For me, I've never ever seen myself at a different club. I've always wanted to play for City. It's my dream club, and like you see today, when I'm playing with the kind of players that I'm playing with, it brings out the best in me, so I'm so happy.' Chelsea have agreed to sell the defender Renato Veiga to Villarreal for a fee worth an initial £21.3million plus £4.3million in add-ons. Veiga is travelling to Spain and will undergo a medical on Thursday. The 22-year-old was signed by Chelsea only last summer from Basel for £12million but left the club in January after asking to leave to get more time playing in his preferred centre-back position. Up until that point he had been used at left back and as cover in midfield at Stamford Bridge. Veiga's ambition is to play in central defence for Portugal at the World Cup in 2026. He joined Juventus on loan in January, at a cost of £4.3million, but the Italian club opted against making his move permanent after a change in senior recruitment staff. Meanwhile, Rodrigo Muniz is expected to stay at Fulham after they rejected multiple bids from Atalanta. The west London club will begin talks about extending the forward's contract beyond its expiry next summer.

Dolphins activate TE Darren Waller from PUP list

August 20 - The Miami Dolphins activated veteran tight end Darren Waller from the physically unable to perform list on Wednesday. Waller, who announced his retirement 14 months ago, joined Miami in a July 1 trade with the New York Giants and has been working to get back into football shape. Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel recently said he expected Waller, who turns 33 next month, to begin practicing "sooner rather than later." Waller's one-year deal in Miami is worth up to $5 million, according to agents Drew Rosenhaus and Robert Bailey. He played one season with the Giants, catching 52 passes for 552 yards and one touchdown in 12 games in 2023 before stepping away from the game in July 2024. Reasons cited for his retirement included a medical scare, a loss of "passion" for football and a burgeoning music career. The Giants traded Waller and a conditional 2027 seventh-round draft pick to Miami for a conditional sixth-round pick in 2026. Waller has 350 career receptions for 4,124 yards and 20 TDs in 86 games (63 starts) with the Baltimore Ravens (2015-16), Oakland/Las Vegas Raiders (2018-22) and Giants. He made the Pro Bowl in 2020 with 107 catches for 1,196 yards and nine scores. Waller is in line to start for the Dolphins, who traded tight end Jonnu Smith to the Pittsburgh Steelers earlier this summer. Other tight ends on the current roster include Julian Hill, Pharaoh Brown, Tanner Conner, Chris Myarick and Hayden Rucci. Miami finishes the preseason schedule at home against Jacksonville on Saturday. The Dolphins open the regular season at Indianapolis on Sept. 7. --Field Level Media
