Washtenaw County woman wins $309K on what she thought was a $10 winning lottery ticket
A Washtenaw County woman was expecting to win a $10 lottery prize when she scanned her winning ticket and instead was shocked to find out she won a $309,989 Fantasy 5 jackpot from the Michigan Lottery. The 54-year-old woman, who wishes to remain anonymous, matched the Fantasy 5 numbers in the July 12 drawing: 13-18-23-28-33. "Fantasy 5 is one of my favorite games to play," said the lucky winner. "I usually buy my tickets online, but I went out for breakfast that morning, so I stopped at a store to buy a ticket while I was out." The woman bought the winning ticket at the Belleville Amoco, located at 10950 Belleville Road in Belleville. "I usually don't check my tickets right after the drawing, but while I was sitting at home watching TV that night, something told me to check my Fantasy 5 ticket," she said. "I scanned it on the app thinking maybe it would be a $10 winner, so I was stunned when $309,989 came up on the scanner! This jackpot prize is such a blessing." With her winnings, the woman plans to pay her bills, pay off her daughter's student loans, and then save the rest. Each Fantasy 5 play is $1, and for an extra $1 per play, players can add EZmatch to a ticket, affording players the chance to win $500 instantly. Players can also add Double Play to Fantasy 5 tickets for an extra $1 per play, which gives them a second chance to win up to $110,000 in the Double Play drawing, according to the Michigan Lottery. Drawings are held every night at 7:29 p.m. Tickets can be purchased until 7:08 p.m. on the day of the drawing.

Plane with 49 people on board crashes in Russia's far east
A Russian plane carrying 49 people has crashed with no survivors, according to reports. The aircraft - which had 43 passengers, including five children, and six crew on board - was flying from the city of Blagoveshchensk on the Russian-Chinese border to the remote town of Tynda, regional governor Vasily Orlov said. "All necessary forces and means have been deployed to search for the plane," Mr Orlov said on Telegram. There were no survivors, news agency TASS reported, adding an error during landing in poor visibility as a reason for the crash in the eastern part of the Amur region. Unverified video, shot from a helicopter and posted on social media, appeared to show that the plane had come down in a densely forested area. Burning fuselage of the plane, which was from the Soviet era and was nearly 50 years old, was found by a rescue helicopter, emergency officials said, adding that rescue crews were rushing to the scene. The Antonov An-24 passenger jet, built in 1976 according to its tail number, and operated by a Siberia-based airline called Angara, disappeared from radar over the area, local officials said. It was believed to be a few kilometres away from its destination when it lost contact, the SHOT news agency reported. The local emergencies ministry put the number of people on board somewhat lower, at around 40. Debris from the plane was found on a hill around 15 km (10 miles) from Tynda, the Interfax news agency said, quoting emergency officials. Yuliya Petina, an emergency services official, wrote on Telegram: "During the search operation, a Mi-8 helicopter belonging to Rossaviatsiya discovered the fuselage of the aircraft, which was on fire. "Rescuers continue to make their way to the scene of the accident". An investigation has been launched, authorities said. Moose meat and antlers caused Alaska plane crash: report
Too much moose meat and a set of antlers strapped to a wing brought a small plane down in Alaska, killing its pilot, according to a crash report published this week. Eugene Peltola died hours after his aircraft -- carrying over 500 pounds (225 kilograms) of moose meat -- plunged into mountains near St Mary's in southwest Alaska in September 2023. A report released Tuesday by the US National Transportation Safety Board found the hefty meat cargo meant the plane was more than 100 pounds over its takeoff weight when it left a remote airstrip in the Yukon Delta National Wildlife Refuge. The presence of a pair of moose antlers on the right wing strut of the plane -- a common practice in Alaska -- would likely have made flight even trickier, the report said, because of their effect on aerodynamics. Clint Johnson, the Alaska Region Chief for NTSB, was cited by local media as saying there were three main factors that contributed to the crash of the Piper PA 18-150 Super Cub. "Number one was, obviously, the overweight condition -- no ifs, ands, or buts there," he said, according to the website "The parasitic drag from the antlers that were attached to the right wing, and then also the last thing would be the wind, the mechanical wind turbulence at the end of the takeoff area, which unfortunately, led to this accident. "If you would have been able to take one of those items out, we probably wouldn't be having this conversation. But those things all in combination led to this tragic accident." Peltola was the husband of former US Representative Mary Peltola, the first Alaska Native to sit in Congress. The Democrat beat former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin in a 2022 special election, but lost her re-election bid in November last year. hg/jgc
