Halestorm's Lzzy Hale feared Back to Beginning performance invite was fake and didn't reply at first

Perth Now29-04-2025

Halestorm's Lzzy Hale didn't respond to Sharon Osbourne's email inviting the band to perform at Black Sabbath's last-ever concert for two days - because she didn't know if it was "real".
The 41-year-old singer is the only woman who has been invited to perform at the star-studded 'Back to the Beginning' event, which will feature Black Sabbath's original line-up, Ozzy Osbourne, Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler, and Bill Ward, as well as performances from Metallica, Slayer, Pantera, Gojira, Alice In Chains, and Lamb Of God among others.
Speaking to Audacy Music, Lzzy said: "Dude, so we got this e-mail from [Ozzy's wife and manager] Sharon Osbourne. And I didn't answer it for two days. 'cause I'm, like, 'Is this real?' It's wild.
"I've been a Black Sabbath fan since I was 11. The first riff I ever learned a guitar was 'Heaven And Hell' by Black Sabbath.
"To be the only woman asked to be there is an honour as well."
Several of Lzzy's fellow female singers, including The Pretty Reckless' Taylor Momsen and Evanescence frontwoman Amy Lee, have told her how "proud" they are ahead of her performance at 'Back to the Beginning', which will take place at Villa Park in Birmingham on July 5th.
She added: "I was talking to my friends, Taylor Momsen and Amy Lee and [In This Moment's] Maria Brink and all of my sisters in this genre, and they're all so proud of me.
"And I said, 'Hey, girls, I'm carrying you with me. You're gonna be there in spirit. I'm gonna make you girls so proud.'
"And so it's this beautiful event that everyone gets to look forward to. I'm so glad they're doing it."
Rage Against The Machine rocker Tom Morello is the musical director of the spectacle, and he has told Lzzy it is "in the works" for her and Disturbed's David Draiman to perform Ozzy and Lita Ford song 'Close My Eyes Forever' at the event.
Lzzy and David previously recorded the cover together as a duet.
She said: "So, according to Tom Morello, that is in the works, but he said, 'You're gonna have to be patient with the confirmation for that.'
"Because of Ozzy's health and everything, we're gonna have to see pretty much on the day how much Ozzy's going to be singing and willing to do.
But Halestorm is doing a set. We're also doing a Black Sabbath cover.
"And I've been asked to sing in the supergroup with Tom Morello and everybody there."

Ryan Coogler speaks out on potential Sinners sequel

Ryan Coogler says 'Sinners' will not be getting a sequel. The filmmaker wrote and directed the acclaimed horror movie, which is set in 1932 in the he Mississippi Delta and stars Michael B. Jordan as twin brothers Smoke and Stack who return to Clarksdale wafter serving in World War I and open a juke joint only to be confronted by a supernatural evil. Coogler has told fans there will not be a follow-up film as it was always his intention for 'Sinners' to be a standalone story, following his work on franchises 'Black Panther' and 'Creed'. In interview with Ebony magazine, he said: "I've been in a space of making franchise films for a bit, so I wanted to get away from that. "I was looking forward to working on a film that felt original and personal to me and had an appetite for delivering something to audiences that was original and unique.' Coogler wanted movie goers to watch 'Sinners' - which also stars Hailee Steinfeld, Wunmi Mosaku, Miles Caton and Jack O'Connell - and come away with the feeling it was a "holistic and finished thing". He added: "I wanted the movie to feel like a full meal: your appetizers, starters, entrees and desserts, I wanted all of it there. I wanted it to be a holistic and finished thing. That was how I was asked all about it. That was always my intention." 'Sinners' has been a box office hit and has earned over $350 million at the global box office and it will be available on streaming platforms and VOD on 3 June. Coogler recently revealed that the plot for 'Sinners' was inspired by the Metallica song 'One', which featured on the metal band's 1988 LP ' ...And Justice for All'. Speaking to the San Fransisco Chronicle, he said: "I wanted the movie to feel like a song, so I used Metallica's One." The filmmaker explained how the song "starts off intense, then gets melodic and going somewhere just crazy. But by the time you're finished, it was clear you were always going to get there." Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich even worked on the score for the horror film.

Dave Mustaine claims he was left without credit for songs that 'made' Metallica

Dave Mustaine has claimed he penned "a lot of" music that "made" Metallica. Before he co-founded thrash metal band Megadeth, Mustaine was the lead guitarist for Metallica, though he was dismissed from the band before their debut album in 1983. In a recent interview, the 63-year-old rocker admitted he was left "p***** off" after the band allegedly went ahead and used his riffs - despite him telling them not to use his music. Asked whether it was his booze habit that led to his departure, Mustaine told 'The Shawn Ryan Show': "We all drank. That's why they called it Alcoholica. I mean, they didn't call it Dave-Alcoholica. We all drank. And they continued to drink like that even after I was gone. But that was, I think, the beginning of the end.' Mustaine then shared that he had left Metallica with a tape of his riffs. He went on: 'Just me playing and playing and playing… We took that tape player and the reel of tape with us out to New York. 'We did two shows out there, and after those two shows, they woke me up one morning and said, 'Look, you're out of the band.' 'And I said, 'What are you talking about?' 'You're out of the band.' I said, 'No warning? No second chance? You're not gonna give me a warning? You're just gonna kick me out?' And I thought that was unfair. And it showed a grotesque lack of character. And so that p***** me off and was a huge part of the fuel. 'But at the time, I was really mad and I didn't wanna forgive them for what they did. 'And I told them when I left, 'Do not use my music. And of course they used it.' Mustaine claims Metallica tracks such as 'Ride The Lightning', 'The Call Of Ktulu', 'Phantom Lord', 'Metal Militia', 'Jump In The Fire', and 'The Four Horsemen' contain his riffs. He added: 'And I wrote a bunch of Leper Messiah [on Metallica's third album, Master Of Puppets] too. They didn't give me credit on that. 'You listen to the riffs, you know they're my riffs. It's, like, you think I'm gonna all of a sudden hear my riff and say, 'That's not me.' So, yeah, I wrote a lot of their music that made them, and all the solos on that first record were mine – the best Kirk [Hammett, Mustaine's replacement] could try and copy them.'

Kelly Osbourne, Sam Neill, Kylie Minogue among host of celebrities to rally behind comedian Magda Szubanski after cancer diagnosis

Reality TV star Kelly Osbourne is among a slew of celebrities who have rallied around much-loved comedian Magda Szubanski after she revealed her diagnosis with an 'obscure' cancer. The Kath and Kim star announced she had stage-four mantle cell lymphoma, describing it as a 'rare and fast-moving blood cancer'. Know the news with the 7NEWS app: Download today The 64-year-old went public with the diagnosis in an Instagram post on Thursday in which her head was shaved, saying it was in preparation for her treatment in which it would fall out. The comment section of the post was flooded with love and support, notably from a host of celebrities both Australian and international. Kelly Osbourne, daughter of Black Sabbath rocker Ozzy Osbourne, shared her adoration for Szubanski, saying her character Sharon from Kath and Kim 'got me through some of my darkest days'. 'I know you don't know me but I wanted to share with you that every time I don't feel well whether it be mental or physical illness I put on Kath and Kim,' she wrote. 'I want to take the time to reach out and tell you how much I f****n love you. You have helped me so much if there is ever anything I can do to help/support you on this journey please don't hesitate to reach out.' British actor Richard E. Grant said: 'WE ALL LOVE YOU SOOOOOO MUCH Mags.' Notable Australian celebrities also came out in spades to support the beloved comedian including Sam Neill, Terri Irwin, Rebecca Gibney and both Dannii and Kylie Minogue. 'Sending all love,' Kylie wrote. TV presenter Lisa Wilkinson said all of Australia was behind the comedian in her fight. 'Sending love, strength and every ounce of joy you have given all of us over the decades, to help see you through these difficult times darling Magda,' she wrote. Szubanski smiled and laughed throughout her video, at one point cackling as she exclaimed 'what are you gonna do?' 'I won't sugar coat it, it's rough,' she wrote of her diagnosis. 'But I'm hopeful. I'm being lovingly cared for by friends and family, my medical team is brilliant, and I've never felt more held by the people around me.' According to the Leukemia Foundation, mantle cell lymphoma affects the outer-edge — or mantle zone — of B-cells in the lymph node follicle. It accounts for about five to 10 per cent of all non-Hodgkin lymphomas, with the average age at diagnosis between 60 and 65 years. Szubanski said she would be lying low while her immune system 'takes a hammering'. 'I've been feeling pretty ratsh*t for ages. So I asked for extra bloods and — voila,' she wrote. 'So the takeaway is, get tested and listen to your body.' Szubanski is best known for winning the hearts of Australians as the sporty, unlucky-in-love Sharon Strzelecki in sitcom Kath and Kim. That sparked character roles in the smash-hit movies Babe and Happy Feet (and both sequels) among others. She first burst onto Australian screens in the mid-1980s after being picked up by ABC talent scouts watching her perform in a university revue. Her credits include sketch shows Fast Forward and critically acclaimed Big Girl's Blouse, alongside Kath and Kim co-writers Gina Riley and Jane Turner. The comedian was a prominent marriage equality campaigner after coming out as gay in 2012. She used her profile to push for a yes vote in the 2017 Australian referendum on same-sex marriage, including a pivotal appearance on the ABC's Q&A program and an address to the National Press Club.
