Young jockey Tiffani Brooker ends short-lived retirement with renewed determination
So much so that she retired last year, with no real ambitions of returning to be a jockey albeit she remained in the industry while working for Sunshine Coast trainer David Vandyke.
But Brooker has returned from her sabbatical, both refreshed and refocused and she has a special horse to thank, at least in part.

On Saturday at Doomben, Brooker rides Shaun Dwyer -trained pint-sized gelding Becamo.
Brooker will be seeking her third consecutive win on Becamo, in the BM78 Handicap (2000m) where the galloper is a $14 chance after sneaking into the field as first emergency.
But this is much more than just another horse race for Brooker.
Becamo is part-owned by her great mate Rachel Mason, the retired former Queensland jockey.
'Rachel had only just retired when I started my apprenticeship and she really took me under my wing,' Brooker said.
'We have been great mates for years and years, even through all the ins and outs that I have been through.
'Rachel met her partner and they purchased this horse online.
'He was a yearling but he was so small that when I saw him in the paddock, I asked Rachel if she was sure she hadn't bought a weanling.
'It adds something a bit extra to everything, just riding this horse.
'I know how much Rachel loves this horse and now the horse has won his last two in pretty good fashion.
'Rachel is one of the few people who can tell me things about my riding because she has been there and done it and she has known me for so long.
'We don't talk every day, but I can ring her and talk about any issue and she has a very level head.'
Brooker, coming off a winning double at Gatton on Thursday, has four rides at Doomben on Saturday.
It's a far cry from when she walked away from race riding with no plans to be back.

'I took six months off last year and I pretty much just put myself into retirement,' Brooker said.
'I went and worked for David Vandyke, rode work and did a lot of groundwork, I didn't really think about the races.
'I wasn't injured, I was just in a bit of a rut and I decided I didn't want to do it (be a jockey) any more.
'I went and did a bit of travelling but had an epiphany and realised that being a jockey was what I really wanted to do.
'I'm really determined and focused and I have to be, because I think the riding scene in Queensland at the moment is the toughest since I have been a jockey.'

Relishing his new starting role, Tom Lynagh is hoping for one last crack at the British and Irish Lions to try to right some wrongs and help the Wallabies finish the showpiece series in style. After being thrown to the Lions as a Test rookie following a serious injury to Noah Lolesio, Lynagh performed indifferently in Australia's first two defeats to the tourists. The flyhalf put his lightly-framed body on the line and defended bravely in the series-opening 27-19 loss in Brisbane before helping the Wallabies to a big first-half lead in Melbourne last Saturday, only to commit errors that allowed the Lions back into the contest. Australia succumbing to a 29-26 loss to a controversial last-minute try stung Lynagh, but the son of a gun wants the chance to atone in game three in Sydney on Saturday night. "(I want) more time in that seat," the 22-year-old said on Tuesday. "You get a lot more time on the field so you can dictate the game a lot more. When you come off the bench, you've got to understand what role you've got to play and how the game is at that point. "But the jersey's only yours for the week if you're selected. You've just got to go out there and do your job and do your role and put a performance in. "Look, I think I've done all right. I'm a bit disappointed in my goalkicking so far. I feel like that's let myself and the team down a bit. "But in terms of the rest of it, it's been good. Just playing part of the system and just trying to do my role for the team and not overplay my hand." With the No.10 role a real trouble spot for the Wallabies, coach Joe Schmidt said pre-series he had hoped to blood Lynagh on several occasions last year. But an injury-ravaged season cruelled those plans before Lynagh missed the Wallabies' spring tour of the UK last November. "Yeah, having experience before the Lions series would have been great but I didn't get the opportunity to do so," he said, adding that he enjoys a great relationship with Schmidt. "I guess we'll never find out but, like I said, take it one week at a time. "It's been good. Being selected as 10 just tells you everything you need to know, really - that he's got trust and belief in you. "So that's all I've taken from it, really. He's always had that confidence in me ever since I joined the camp for the first time last year. "It's been really good and he's been really positive around everything." Despite the Wallabies coming off second best, Lynagh has loved having his legendary, London-based, 1991 World Cup-winning father Michael back home in Australia to watch the series. "My family back at home and in London, they're all there, they're all on holiday," he said. "So they're enjoying their time off and watching the games. We've shared lots of messages over the last couple of weeks and they've been very supportive from back over there. "We put in a good performance last week and hopefully we can try and do the same and get the result (on Saturday). "We led for pretty much 79 minutes in the last game and lost it in the 80th. That's footy for you. "But we can take plenty of confidence from that game last week, and even the second half in the first Test."

As the breeding barn beckons, trainer Tracey Bartley would love his bonny mare Mabel go out in style with another win as reward for her honesty and consistency. A $5,000 weanling buy from Inglis Digital in 2019, Mabel has been a wonderful member of Bartley's team with six wins, nine placings and over $400,000 in prizemoney. A two-time city winner, Mabel last won was at Kembla's stand-alone meeting on The Gong Day in November 2023 when she won a Benchmark 78 Handicap but she has run some terrific races since. She was runner-up to Angel Fund in a Randwick Midway in January fourth to Wallenda on the Kensington in March. This time in, the six-year-old was a three length seventh to Storm The Ramparts and fourth behind Bundeena both in a Benchmark 78 races at Randwick. 'From barrier 1, she won't have to be right out the back. She should settle midfield. I imagine her settling fifth or sixth and hopefully they can get into the clear at the right time. 'It was nice to see him win the other day because he's had a few issues,' Bartley said. 'He has kissing spine to we've had his back and hocks injected. 'It's nice to finally have had a preparation where everything has gone right. 'That was the first time we have been able to get him up to a distance we've always wanted to see him run over. 'I was rapt to see him to the job and I think he will really go on with it now. 'I don't know how strong this race is but I'm sure he will run a really nice race.'

HOVLAND (8) was beaten a nose second-up at Gosford before a nice win from Magicon over 1800m at Hawkesbury. Stepped up in class when a length fifth to Monarchs Brae on a heavy track at Canterbury. Up to 2200m for the first time and the blinkers come off. MAGICON (10) has been racing well and scored a deserved win over this trip at Grafton last start. BET: NAVAL COMMISSION (1) to win. CASSIEL (1) was kicked off his campaign with a good wins at Canterbury on Apr 21 and at Hawkesbury on June 17. Denied the hat-trick when stepping up to Saturday grade when runner-up to Bundeena in a Bm78 at Randwick. Back in grade and hard to beat. MABEL (6) hasn't won since Nov 2023 but she has run some good races. Was a nose second to Angel Fund in a Randwick Midway in January and was a little unlucky when fourth to Bundeena at Randwick last start. JAMBALAYA (5) resumes after a stylish trial win here on July 8. Has a win and two placings from his three fresh runs. BET: CASSIEL (1) to win. GOLDEN STRAAND (10) was a little green on debut when a length second to Sapphire Rose at Wyong before breaking through with a big Super Maiden win at Gosford. Jumped up to a Bm72 with a game second to Diddle Dumpling at Rosehill. THE REPLICANT (13) hasn't won since beaten Bluff 'N' Bluster over 1400m here on Oct 2, 2023 but is rarely far away.
