Gilbert Burns finds Sean Strickland UFC 312 criticism disrespectful: 'People have very short memories'

USA Today15-02-2025

Add Gilbert Burns to the list of fighters defending Sean Strickland's performance at UFC 312.
Strickland (29-7 MMA, 16-7 UFC) was criticized for his dominant unanimous decision loss to middleweight champion Dricus Du Plessis (23-2 MMA, 9-0 UFC) in this past Saturday's headliner at Qudos Bank Arena in Sydney. Strickland broke his nose in Round 4, but many thought he failed to show a sense of urgency throughout the fight.
Burns would like to remind everyone of former UFC middleweight champion Strickland's past notable wins.
'Maybe he wasn't feeling good, whatever,' Burns said on his 'Show Me The Money' podcast. 'We're never going to know, right? But to say, 'Oh, he talks a lot, he doesn't back it up,' I don't like that. I think the guy backs it up many times. He backed it up against Imavov, he backed it up against my guy Brendan Allen, he backed it up against so many guys, right? Paulo Costa, (Israel) Adesanya, bro, he beat a lot of the best guys, and people are saying, 'Oh, he just talks, he doesn't do much.'
'I think that's very disrespectful. People have very short memories. It's the reels day, you know? It's the TikTok days where you swipe, you see something nice, and swipe again, and it's gone. But it wasn't long ago the guy was the champion, fighting everybody. He beat so many good guys, and people are now talking, 'Oh, he talks a lot, he's crazy,' but I like it. And the guy backs it up, or he tries at least.'
Strickland later revealed that he was battling a staph infection which was visibly noticeable on his arm during fight week. Strickland also discussed a broken arm he was dealing during training camp.

Singer Nezza performed national anthem at Dodgers game in Spanish in anti-ICE protest — after team told her to sing only in English

Singer and social media personality Nezza broke a rule in Dodger Stadium on Saturday. Ahead of the Dodgers' eventual 11-5 win over the Giants, she sang the national anthem in Spanish, but according to a video later posted by the performer, she sang it in her first language against the wishes of the organization. Nezza, whose full name is Vanessa Hernández, posted a video on TikTok where viewers can hear an unidentified Dodgers employee telling her before the performance that 'we are going to do the song in English today, so I'm not sure if that wasn't relayed.' She explained the version of the national anthem that she sang was commissioned in 1945 by the U.S. State Department under President Franklin D. Roosevelt in order to establish a better relationship with Latin Americans. The 30-year-old wanted to sing it amid the recent raids by ICE in Los Angeles. Advertisement 'I didn't think I would be met with any sort of no, especially because we're in LA and with everything happening,' she said amid tears. 'And I've sang the national anthem many times in my life. But today out of all days, I could not. I'm sorry. I just could not believe when she [the Dodgers employee] walked in and told me 'no.' But I just felt like I needed to do it para mi gente [for my people].' 4 Nezza explains the story behind singing the national anthem in Spanish at Dodgers Stadium. The Dodgers did not put out a public comment on the incident. However, a team official explained to the Los Angeles Times that there were no consequences for the franchise regarding the performance, and Nezza would be welcomed back in the future. 4 Nezza attends the 'Mission: Impossible The Final Reckoning' Los Angeles Creators Screening at Paramount Pictures Studios on May 12, 2025, in Los Angeles, California. MMA Junkie's Mike Bohn plays matchmaker and looks ahead to what makes sense for Joaquin Buckley Joaquin Buckley is not broken by his defeat to Kamaru Usman at UFC on ESPN 69 and still intends to put together a legendary career. Buckley (22-7 MMA, 11-5 UFC) suffered his first defeat since dropping to the welterweight division Saturday when he was outworked by former champion Usman (21-4 MMA, 16-3 UFC) en route to a unanimous decision loss at State Farm Arena in Atlanta. Prior to the encounter with Usman, he had put together a 6-0 run in the division that included notables such as Vicente Luque, Stephen Thompson and Colby Covington. He didn't have the necessary answers to thwart Usman's offensive grappling, though, and now he's dealing with the aftermath of a tough night at the office. Buckley issued his first statement since the fight Sunday, claiming Usman was "more concerned about holding me than hurting me" in the octagon and stating he still intends to become "one of the greats" in UFC history (via Instagram): Hand wasn't raised last night but I am still victorious and will be one of the greats ☝️ This trip has been beyond amazing and I wouldn't change a thing that happened in my fight camp everything was perfectly planned I just didn't execute like I know I could… we wanted to land early damage on Usman and get him moving back but he did a good job neutralizing threats with takedowns But don't get it twisted usman was more concerned about holding me than hurting me in this fight but he did what he felt was necessary to win and so can't be mad at him Congrats to @usman84kg and his Team and @francisngannou I saw message 🫡Excited about the welterweight divisionSee ya when I see ya 👋
