‘Child abuse prevention month' highlights big issue in Anderson County
ANDERSON COUNTY, S.C. (WSPA) – Leaders in Anderson County passed a resolution proclaiming April 'Child Abuse Prevention Month.' It's an effort, they said, that highlights a big problem in the region.
'Child abuse is prevalent in Anderson, and there are a lot of children who are being abused,' said Anderson County Councilmember Glenn Davis.
Anderson County councilmembers told 7NEWS they made the declaration in early April to bring attention to local organizations fighting child abuse.
'Every child deserves to grow up in a safe, stable and nurturing environment, free from abuse and neglect,' Davis also said.
Calvary Home for Children and New Foundations Home for Children advocated for Child Abuse Prevention Month. They said more than 15,000 cases of child abuse are reported to South Carolina's Department of Social Services every year. The organizations serve families struggling with domestic violence, drug addiction and other issues.
'It's really about starting a conversation. Does a proclamation end child abuse across the country? No. But does it start a conversation so we can remove some of the shame? Yes,' Calvary Home for Children Executive Director Laura Lindsley told 7NEWS. 'Every two and a half minutes, a kid enters foster care, and so, bringing some awareness to that is a big deal.'
The nonprofits said they've been running campaigns all month long for child abuse prevention. They encourage people to say something if they see something that doesn't look right.
'I think just keeping an open ear and an open eye with children. Take things seriously. If they say something, and it's out of the norm for that child, ask a couple of questions,' said New Foundations Home for Children CEO Steve Dean. 'Just be aware. Be compassionate, and be ready to be involved and get a child help if you know or even believe that something has happened.'

Hosford 'quickly re-enter(ed) the vehicle in an apparent attempt to hide,' according to the report. But before she could close the door, the suspect, identified as Jackson Sagesse, 21, of Sunrise, allegedly forced the door open and stabbed her repeatedly in the neck and throat, according to the report. When Bryant returned to the garage, the suspect allegedly stabbed him in the throat during a 'violent confrontation,' per the report. With Sagesse allegedly chasing him, Bryant ran from the garage and managed to call 911. Sagesse allegedly returned to the garage and tried to unsuccessfully drive the car with Hosford lying unresponsive on the backseat floor before he fled on foot, according to the report. Police spoke to an employee at the apartment complex who immediately recognized Sagesse as a resident of a nearby apartment building, the report alleges. Sagesse was arrested at the apartment where he lives with his mother, where authorities allegedly found a kitchen knife in his front right pocket that matched one found in the car in the garage, the report states. When Sagesse was read his rights, he allegedly told officers, 'I just killed someone and walked away.' Hosford was pronounced dead at the scene. Bryant was rushed to a local hospital. Sagesse is charged with premeditated murder and attempted murder. He is being held at the Broward County Jail without bond. It is unclear whether he has retained an attorney who can speak on his police continue to investigate, Hosford's loved ones are mourning the loss of the popular hair stylist who owned the Hailey Janes Beauty Boutique in Fort Lauderdale. Hosford's best friend, Aubrey Rosebrock, told 7 News, 'She was a force to be reckoned with.' Bryant stopped off at his apartment that night 'to grab some stuff,' he told 7 News. Then he was going to take her home, he said. 'I know she was a fighter,' he told 7 News. 'I believe she fought, and I believe she was scared.' Growing emotional, he said, 'I want the world to know what her name is and who she was. There's evil, and there's good, and we lost the good. The good lost.' People from all over the world will be attending her funeral, he said. In a GoFundMe set up to help pay for Hosford's Celebration of Life on June 11, organizer Heather Hadwen wrote that remaining contributions will go toward a nonprofit scholarship fund — the Hailey Jane Beauty Foundation — created in her honor. "This sacred offering will provide support for those pursuing their dreams in the world of hair, beauty, and self-expression, a world Hailey illuminated with her passion, artistry, and radiant soul from the young age of 16," Hadwen wrote. Opossum rescued from Mackinac Bridge after being spotted by driver
The Mackinac Bridge connects the upper and lower peninsulas of Michigan, carrying commuters, tourists and, on occasion, furry animals such as an opossum crossing the bridge on May 29, the Mackinac County Sheriff's office confirmed. The opossum wandered onto the bridge Thursday evening and was spotted by a passing motorist, the post on social media said. "Thanks to the Mackinac Bridge Authority (MBA) staff and Deputy Davis from the Mackinac County Sheriff's Department, he was safely relocated to the south end of the bridge," the post on Facebook reads. According to Terminix, an opossum, often confused with a possum, does not have a furry tail and is found in North America. The latter, also marsupials, have furry tails and are found in Australia. They are shorter and have less pointed noses than their counterparts. They're omnivorous. According to a report from the Port Huron Times Herald, opossums have expanded north throughout the state since the 20th century, establishing a presence in the lower Upper Peninsula and more recently moving into Ontario. Current bridge conditions can be found on the Mackinac Bridge Authorities website. Additionally when traveling in the in the Mackinac Straits area, motorist can listen to 530 AM or 1610 AM for updates. Travelers can check the Mackinac Bridge Cam online for updates. The images from multiple cameras are configured to automatically update every 60 seconds. Cameras capture the administration building looking south, the dock in St. Ignace, looking south; Bridge View Park in St. Ignace, looking south; from Mackinaw City, looking north; and St. Ignace, along Interstate 75. Passenger car, van, motorcycle, station wagon, SUV, pickup, and school buses cost $2 per axle or $4 per vehicle, the Authority said. (A van is a two-axle, four-tire vehicle not primarily intended for carrying cargo or commercial goods.) Other vehicles are $5 per axle. Vehicles not meeting passenger vehicle characteristics include, but are not limited to, tractor-trailers, buses, motor homes and step or cube vans, the Authority said. All vehicles will be classified by the lead vehicle. Anything being towed will be charged the per axle rate of the lead vehicle with the exception of the motor home towing an auto; the towed auto will be charged at the auto rate. The Mackinac Bridge accepts cash, credit/debit cards, Apple Pay, or Google Pay. Frequent travelers can sign up for MacPass and obtain a transponder for their windshield. The Authority said 239,000 vehicles passed over the bridge in March 2024. In January 2025, 214,000 vehicles crossed the bridge.
