Despite impressing, Aari McDonald cut by Indiana Fever as hardship need expires

Yahoo19 hours ago

INDIANAPOLIS – The Indiana Fever released Aari McDonald on Friday, ending a three-game stint for the hardship player.
McDonald signed with the Fever June 1 on an emergency hardship contract, something WNBA teams can use when their game-available players drop below 10. Caitlin Clark and Sophie Cunningham have been out with injuries since May 30, putting the Fever at nine available players.

The Fever could only roster 11 players to begin the season because of salary cap limitations, but they were able to go over the cap to sign McDonald because of their hardship need.
With Clark and Cunningham's likely return for Saturday's game vs. the Liberty, the Fever are back up to 10 game-available players, and McDonald's contract was automatically terminated per the WNBA's collective bargaining agreement because Indiana's hardship need expired.
Why was Aari McDonald released? Explaining WNBA hardship contracts
McDonald was impressive in her three games with the Fever, averaging 11.0 points, 3.0 assists and 1.3 rebounds off the bench over 25.3 minutes per game. She brought a spark to the Fever with Clark out, helping push the pace in transition and facilitate the offense.

McDonald fit in well in her short time in Indianapolis, something she considered an audition to find a permanent spot on a roster — whether it be on the Fever or another team.

"She's gonna find a spot, I don't think that's a debate right now," Fever coach Stephanie White said on Friday. "You know, she's been at the ultimate pro. She came in ready to go. You know, she had watched such such a large amount of film just on her flight in here. You could tell already her high IQ, you know, she's a dog, and we're going to miss her. Certainly, what she brought to the table for us, and being able to come in at the point guard position and just really impact us right away was huge. But, yeah, she's not gonna have a problem finding a job."
If the Fever want to re-sign McDonald on a standard contract immediately, they would first need to wait 10 days because of another CBA rule, then cut a player on an unprotected contract in order to clear up cap space to sign McDonald. They would also need to hope McDonald, who becomes an unrestricted free agent immediately upon her release, would not sign with another team in those 10 days.
The money the Fever paid McDonald over her hardship contract will still count against the cap, which will push back the day the Fever will be able to sign a 12th player on a standard contract.
McDonald signed for $51,974, per Richard Cohen of Her Hoop Stats, which is 75% of the veteran minimum salary. The Fever will not pay McDonald that entire sum, but a prorated amount that breaks down per day she is on the team — coming out to about $497 per day, or $6,461 for the 13 days she was with the Fever.

So, the Fever's available cap space for the season dropped to $36,500. Indiana will still be able to sign a 12th player sometime in July, but the timing would depend on if they want to sign a player with 0-3 years of experience, which has a lower minimum, or someone with 4+ years of experience, who are subject to the veteran minimum.

Wings acquire Storm center Li Yueru, who fills immediate roster need

The Dallas Wings are adding some frontcourt help for No. 1 pick Paige Bueckers. The team acquired center Yi Lueru from the Seattle Storm on Saturday in exchange for a 2026 second-round pick and 2027 third-rounder. Lueru, 26, recently requested a trade, dissatisfied with the playing time she was getting with the Storm. Averaging 8.7 minutes, the 6-foot-7 center was scoring 2.8 points and 1.6 points in nine games. Advertisement A third-round selection of the Atlanta Dream in 2019, Lueru has been traded three times during her WNBA career while playing for the Chicago Sky and Los Angeles Sparks. Last season with the Sparks, she averaged 5.1 points and 3.7 rebounds per game while shooting 49% from the floor. During the offseason, Yueru went to the Storm as part of the blockbuster three-team deal that sent Jewell Loyd to the Las Vegas Aces and Kelsey Plum to the Sparks. Prior to joining the WNBA, Yueru played nine seasons in the Women's Chinese Basketball Association for the Guangdong Dolphins and Inner Mongolia. Thus far, her production has been far below her performance for the Chinese national team, for whom she tallied 17.7 points and 11 rebounds per game during last summer's Paris Olympics. The Chinese federation reportedly wants Yueru to receive more playing time if she continues playing in the WNBA, according to ESPN. Advertisement That could happen with Dallas, where both centers on the roster have left for a couple of weeks to play in the FIBA EuroBasket tournament. Luisa Geiselsoder is averaging 6.7 points and 3.7 rebounds per game. However, she left the Wings to play for Germany while Teaira McCowan (5.1 ppg, 4.8 rpg) is playing for the Turkish national team in the tournament. So Yueru fills an immediate need on the roster. Despite their last-place 1-11 record. the Wings average 35.7 rebounds per game, which is good for fifth in the WNBA. Yueru will presumably help with that. Bueckers is scoring 17.4 points with 6.1 assists and 1.9 steals per game, while shooting 42% on 3-pointers. The Wings are also getting 16.6 points per game from Arike Ogunbowale. Dallas has lost seven consecutive games after Friday's 88-84 defeat to the Aces. The Wings are off until Tuesday when they host the Golden State Valkyries.

Wings acquire Li Yueru from Storm in exchange for future draft picks: Impact on center's playing time

The Dallas Wings acquired center Li Yueru in a trade with the Seattle Storm in exchange for two future draft picks, the teams announced Saturday. Seattle will receive Dallas' 2026 second-round pick, which includes the right to swap with the Connecticut Sun, and Dallas' 2027 third-round pick, with the right to swap with the Indiana Fever, in return for Yueru. Advertisement Yueru had been in her first season with the Storm after being traded to the franchise as part of the three-way deal that sent Jewell Loyd to the Las Vegas Aces and Kelsey Plum to the Los Angeles Sparks last offseason. Yueru requested a trade from the Storm on June 4, a league source confirmed to , with the source noting that a desire for increased playing time was central to the ask. Yueru is in her third WNBA season and saw her minutes decrease from 14.4 per game last season with the Sparks to 8.7 this year. She elected not to play in this July's FIBA Asia Cup, and the source said that the Chinese federation preferred her to receive more playing time if she was going to stay in the WNBA this summer. Yueru led China in scoring (17.7 points per game) and rebounding (11.0 per game) at the Paris Olympics last summer. 'I'd love to stay here because I feel so happy every day, whenever I come to practice or go to the gym,' Yueru said about playing in the WNBA. 'But I just want to play. I came to America only for one reason — just that I want to play basketball.' Advertisement In Dallas, she will have that opportunity. The Wings are in desperate need of frontcourt depth as their two centers will be unavailable for at least a few games during the upcoming FIBA EuroBasket tournament. Center Teaira McCowan left the team earlier this month to join the Turkish national team, where she is a naturalized citizen, and German center Luisa Geiselsöder is set to join Germany this week. With their departures to EuroBasket, NaLyssa Smith and Myisha Hines-Allen were the only other options first-year coach Chris Koclanes could have turned to at the center position. Despite 2025 top draft pick Paige Bueckers averaging 17.4 points and 6.1 assists per game, the Wings are a league-worst 1-11. Dallas appeared as if it was set to pick up its second win of the season Friday night against the Las Vegas Aces, until the Aces closed the game on a 17-2 run to prevail. Advertisement Yueru could make her Wings debut Tuesday, when Dallas hosts the Golden State Valkyries. The Storm (6-4) have four additional picks between the 2026 and 2027 drafts.
