Cristiano Ronaldo saw a bigger picture when he rejected Club World Cup offers
Following Al Nassr's final league game of the season last month, Ronaldo had posted on social media 'the chapter is over', which fuelled speculation the five-time Ballon d'Or winner was to leave the Saudi Pro League club.
The 40-year-old revealed teams had 'reached out' over taking part in the Club World Cup in the United States, but he decided instead to extend his stay with Al Nassr, where his old contract was set to expire at the end of June.

'I had some offers to play (Club) World Cup, but I think it didn't make sense because I prefer to have a good rest, a good preparation, because this season will be very long, because this is the season of the World Cup at the end,' Ronaldo told Al Nassr TV.
'I want to be ready not only for Al Nassr, but also for the national team, so this is why I decide to play the last game for the Nations League and not listen to nothing (about the offers) and of course to be in this club, which I love.'
Al Nassr finished third in the Saudi Pro League last season after being knocked out of the Kings Cup and AFC Champions League, which saw the club part company with Italian manager Stefano Pioli.

Portuguese coach Jorge Jesus is reportedly to set to take over, and Al Nassr captain Ronaldo – who was leading scorer with 35 goals last season – feels the club can go on to challenge for top honours.
'I want to stay because I believe in the project, not (just) the next two years, but until 2034 which is the goal and will be the World Cup in Saudi Arabia, which I believe will be the most beautiful one ever,' said Ronaldo, who joined Al Nassr in December 2022 as a free agent after leaving Manchester United.
'So I am happy – two years more, I want to fight with the best teams in Saudi to win the league. I believe and let's see in the end of the day who is better.
'We know that what we did last season is not enough, but it is already past. We have to focus now in the present and the present is good.'

Chelsea eventually booked their spot in the quarter-finals of the Club World Cup after finding a route past Portuguese giants Benfica following a huge delay in the USA Reece James admitted he feared Chelsea 's marathon Club World Cup tie would never finish. Chelsea's last 16 clash with Benfica turned into a complete farce when it was delayed for nearly TWO HOURS because of lightning storms and a severe weather warning and eventually took four hours and 38 minutes to complete after kick-off. James said: 'It was in the back of my mind that there was a chance that the game was not going to get completed. It was quite disruptive. We're happy, you know, we are into the next round and the game is completed. 'We got to 85 minutes and then had to sit on wait for, I don't know, a period. It was difficult, the climate was very hot and humid.' It is the sixth game in the Club World Cup which has been delayed by the weather and the third time a game has been delayed by over an hour. Strict US rules mean if there is lightning within a five mile radius then the game is delayed by 30 minutes for safety reasons - and the time delay is then reset every time a bolt is spotted. It is highly likely FIFA will review those protocols before the international World Cup next summer as the climate in the United States has been challenging. Chelsea actually produced their best performance of the tournament against Benfica and James opened the scoring with a 64th minute free kick and they were heading for victory. Incredibly, Chelsea were just six minutes from victory when their players were ordered off the pitch as they had to take cover in the dressing room while the fans were also evacuated from the stands for one hour and 53 minutes until the game restarted. But then when the match eventually restarted, Benfica snatched a dramatic 95th minute equaliser when Angel Di Maria scored from the spot after a highly controversial penalty was given against Malo Gusto. Benfica's Gianluca Prestianni was sent off for a second yellow card in extra time and then Christopher Nkunku, Pedro Neto and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall scored in extra time to finally settle a madcap, unforgettable game. Now Chelsea must play Palmeiras in the quarter finals on Friday and Philadelphia and if Manchester City win their game with Al-Hilal in Orlando on Monday then they are on course for a semi final showdown in New York if they both progress. The chance of an all English showdown 3,500 miles from home in New York would be an American dream and a red hot ticket for FIFA. But FIFA must overcome big problems in the Club World Cup to make this tournament a big success and also next year's international World Cup - starting with the weather. They cannot change nature but they can think about where games are played and if you can reduce the safety protocols to stop such big delays. Chelsea now face Palmeiras in the next round and the celebrations at the end against Benfica showed how much this meant. James added: 'We're in a stage of a tournament where you win, you carry on, you lose, you go home. It's knockout football. We got so close in 90 minutes and we felt short. And yeah, we managed to do it in extra time. 'You don't make up the favourites, we're the players. You know, we try and start well against whoever we're playing. It's going to be another tough game. Palmeiras has got amazing players and they're a good side. We're going to set out to win.'

‘It's a joke': Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca rages at two-hour weather delay at Club World Cup
Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca called the two-hour weather delay that disrupted his team's Club World Cup win over Benfica as a 'joke' and 'not football'. The Blues eventually defeated Benfica 4-1 in extra-time to reach the quarter-finals but the match took four hours and 39 minutes to complete after a storm warming in Charlotte, North Carolina. Chelsea were leading 1-0 when players were asked to leave the pitch. Both teams were taken back inside and were pictured riding exercise bikes and kicking balls in the dressing room during the interruption. It was the sixth time at the Club World Cup that a game had been stopped because of a storm or lightning warning and Maresca went as far to suggest the United States was not a suitable host. Games at the inaugural 32-team tournament are being played across the US, which co-hosts the men's World Cup next year, and other stoppages have taken place in Orlando, Cincinnati and New Jersey. "For me personally, it's not football," Maresca told a press conference at around 2am local time in Charlotte. "I think it's a joke. It's not football. "I can understand that for security reasons, you have to suspend the game. But if you suspend seven or eight games, that means that probably this is not the right place to do this competition. "It's a fantastic competition. It's the Club World Cup, all the best clubs are here," he added. "But six, seven games suspended? It's not normal. In a World Cup how many have they suspended? Probably zero. In a European (championship), how many games? Zero. There is some problem." Maresca's side had appeared set for the last eight after Reece James's free kick had given them a second-half lead in Charlotte, only for the game to be halted four minutes from time due to lightning in the area. A long pause disrupted their rhythm and allowed Benfica to equalise from the penalty spot late on, Angel Di Maria cool and calm from 12 yards after Malo Gusto had handled. But Benfica were rocked moments into extra time by the sending off of Gianluca Prestianni for a second bookable offence, and Chelsea eventually romped home, goals from Christopher Nkunku, Pedro Neto and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall adding gloss to the result as the Portuguese side wilted late on. Chelsea will face Palmeiras, who earlier edged fellow Brazilian club Botafogo, in the last eight in Philadelphia on Friday. "The game was very good for 85 minutes, then we stopped for two hours, and when we started it was a completely different game. It's not the same game because you break the tempo," Maresca said.
