Lalas Challenges Diego Luna After 'Disappearing' In USMNT's Gold Cup Collapse
The USMNT lost 2-1 to Mexico in the Gold Cup final. After Chris Richards opened the scoring, Mexico took control of the match, and Diego Luna couldn't replicate his earlier performances to deliver when the team needed him most.

Luna had become a key player for the USMNT during the knockout rounds. In the quarterfinal against Costa Rica, he scored his first international goal. Then, in the semifinal against Guatemala, he found the net twice in a span of just 10 minutes. But when it came time for the final, he couldn't make the same impact.
Diego played 85 minutes before being subbed off — and left the field without leaving his mark on the game. That led Alexis Lalas to publicly call him out.
'I think he is a star in the making. But in order to be a star, you have to bring it when everybody is expecting you to bring it — and he didn't bring it today. He disappeared today.' - Lalas said post-game.
Lalas admitted it wasn't entirely Luna's fault, as the entire team underperformed, but emphasized that the kind of player Luna is expected to become needs to show up in games like the Gold Cup final.
'If he is the player that we're making him out to be — and I do think he can be — he better learn from this. That's not what stars do. So if you want to be a star, and you want all that attention, then you've got to bring it on the big days. And he didn't bring it today.'

Diego Luna's Future with the USMNT
Luna wore the number 10 shirt in the absence of Christian Pulisic, who opted out of the tournament to rest after a long European season — a decision that didn't sit well with former USMNT legends and head coach Mauricio Pochettino.
The Gold Cup marked the beginning of Pochettino's tenure. The next tournament on the calendar is the CONCACAF Nations League, though opponents haven't been confirmed. After that, the focus shifts to the 2026 World Cup.
As one of the host nations, the USMNT is already qualified — although it's still uncertain whether the team will play the opening match at the iconic Azteca Stadium in Mexico.

For now, Luna is expected to remain involved with the national team. His three goals and two assists showed promise, but his place in the starting XI is far from guaranteed. With Pulisic, Weah, and McKennie returning for the next call-ups, competition will be fierce.

Sweden crushes Germany at the Euros for the first time and tops group
ZURICH (AP) — Sweden put down a statement 4-1 win over Germany at the Women's European Championship on Saturday and secured a potentially easier route to the final. The record eight-time champion was dominated, although Sweden's task was made easier after Germany forward Carlotta Wamser was sent off — barely half an hour in — for swatting a ball away from the goal-line with her arm. By that point Sweden was up 2-1 after goals from Stina Blackstenius and teenager Smilla Holmberg canceled Jule Brand's early opener for Germany. Fridolina Rolfö calmly slotted the penalty after Wamser's red card and substitute Lina Hurtig wrapped up the scoring late on to cap a miserable night for Germany, which conceded four goals for the first time in any Euro match, including qualifiers. It was the first time Sweden beat Germany at the Euros and ensured it topped Group C with maximum points and avoided the possibility of facing World Cup champion and Euro 2025 favorite Spain in the semifinals. Sweden will face the runner-up of Group D in the quarterfinals, with Germany facing the team that tops that group. That will be France, England or the Netherlands. France has six points and plays the Netherlands, which has three points along with defending champion England. England plays Wales, also on Sunday. Germany and Sweden had already qualified for the knockout stages but the match was decisive for top spot in the group, with a draw being enough for Sweden thanks to a better goal difference. There were four good chances in the opening five minutes and Germany took the lead in the seventh minute when Brand ran onto a smart throughball from Wamser and fired in. It was the first goal Sweden conceded in the tournament but it recovered from that setback just five minutes later. A rapid counterattack saw Blackstenius collect the ball near the halfway line and race into the area before slotting calmly past Ann-Katrin Berger. Sweden led in somewhat fortunate circumstances in the 25th. Holmberg sprinted down the right and into the area and was tackled by Germany defender Sarai Linder, who inadvertently kicked the ball off the Swedish teen's shin and it ricocheted into the net. It was a first international goal for the 18-year-old Holmberg, who recently graduated from high school. Matters swiftly went from bad to worse for Germany when Wamser was shown a straight red card for blocking a shot by Rolfö with her arm. Wamser was in the team in place of Giulia Gwinn, and the injured Germany captain put her arm around the young defender when she left the pitch in tears. Rolfö dispatched the penalty into the bottom left corner.

Club World Cup finalists hope US dumps afternoon kickoffs next summer due to sweltering temperatures
Chelsea and PSG play starting at 3 p.m. in MetLife Stadium, also site of next year's World Cup final. Because of the heat, Fernandez recommended FIFA avoid afternoon kickoffs at the 2026 tournament. 'The speed of the game is not the same,' he said. 'Everything becomes very slow. Well, let's hope that next year they change the schedule, at least so that it remains a beautiful and attractive football spectacle.' Advertisement Temperature at kickoff Sunday is forecast to be 83 degrees, with humidity that will make it feel like 91. 'The game will be harder for the team that don't have the ball,' Chelsea captain Reece James said. 'I think we've played in it a fair amount now, so I'd say we're slowly, slowly getting used to it.' Paris Saint-Germain coach Luis Enrique and his team will likely deal with temperatures feeling in the low 90s on Sunday in New Jersey. JUAN MABROMATA/AFP via Getty Images Both teams were allowed by FIFA not to have media availabilities on Saturday. PSG seeks to complete a quadruple after winning Ligue 1, the Coupe de France, and Chelsea is trying for its second world championship after winning in 2021. The Blues have a fourth day of rest after beating Fluminense 2-0 on Tuesday, a day before PSG routed Real Madrid 4-0. Advertisement Lowest ticket prices dropped from $330 earlier in the week to $199.60 on Saturday. 'I agree with most of the people that they say that they are the best team in Europe, the best team in the world, and the reason why is because they are showing this — they show in France, they show in the Champions League, they are showing in this competition," Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca said. Related : PSG clinched the French league title on April 5 with six games to spare, won the French Cup on May 24, and the Champions League a week later, romping over Inter Milan, 5-0, in the final. 'We really want to go grab this title and this would make it an absolutely perfect season, which would be very hard to replicate,' PSG captain Marquinhos said. 'We really want to make history.' Chelsea had a more modest season, finishing fourth in the Premier League, losing to Brighton in the fourth round of the FA Cup, to Newcastle in the fourth round of the League Cup, and winning the third-tier UEFA Conference League. 'Everyone is picking up our opposition,' James said. 'We are preparing right and we are going to win.'
