One-year MBA cohort at IIMB has civil services officer to bank employee who converted his disability to strength

The Hindu06-05-2025

Gone are the days when an MBA degree used to be pursued only by those who wanted a career in management, or those who had finished a commerce degree. Today, these courses act as gateways for those who are looking to transition from one role to another, resuming their career after motherhood, or an opportunity to pause their professional life to upskill.
This academic year's one-year MBA (EPGP) cohort at the Indian Institute of Management Bangalore (IIMB) is a mix of many such students.
Balancing studies and motherhood
Richa Jha, an IT service professional, worked in five organisations over a period of eight years. After working in various roles like transition trainer and associate operations manager, she made a conscious decision to pause her career when her son turned one.
She enrolled in the one-year course when she was looking to get back to the workforce. 'I had to upskill and evolve to match my aspirations. Pursuing an MBA felt like the right choice, and IIMB was the only place that aligned with my vision for career transformation and growth,' she said.
Along the same lines, Neethu Mary Mathews chose IIMB for MBA as it offers family accommodation, which helps her balance her studies with taking care of her three-year-old toddler. Ms. Mathews has an impressive career having cleared the Indian Engineering Service (IES) examination of UPSC twice.
She first served in The Indian Naval Armament Service and later in the Indian Railway Service of Electrical Engineers (IRSEE). She was responsible for prepping loco pilots for the operation of the first Vande Bharat Express train at South Western Railway (SWR).
Disability to strength
Himanshu Chopra met with an accident and suffered multiple disabilities. He survived with the help of seven plastic surgeries. He received an academic scholarship during his under-graduate course for being amongst the top 5% students in the batch.
'In partnership with National Service Scheme (NSS), I, along with 25 other members, decided to adopt a nearby village. I took charge of the education issues and mentored over 20 disabled children to learn and educate themselves while overcoming their disabilities. Over the span of two years, our first batch of students got admitted in give schools and passed their examinations,' he shared.
His earlier plan to join an IIM, when he secured 99.91 percentile in CAT 2021, did not pan out due to medical reasons. He then took up a job in State Bank of India (SBI) in Mohali (Chandigarh), and simultaneously finished all the levels of the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) course.
'After 7.5 years at SBI, I recognised critical knowledge gaps that were limiting my professional growth. This programme stood out as the ideal platform to bridge these gaps,' Mr. Chopra shared.
Rohita Mary Raju, who taught in government schools in Mumbai for two years and is now a co-founder of a non-profit; Anshul Chatter, who has worked for more than nine years in the automotive industry and co-founded an EV startup; Mihir Prakash who served as the Senior Trade Advisor (Professional Services) for the U.K. government in India, leading trade negotiations and market advisory for the British High Commissioner to India, are some of the other candidates who are a part of the cohort.

SBI cuts EBLR, home loan rates by 50 bps after RBI's policy rate cut

The country's largest lender, State Bank of India (SBI), on Friday reduced its External Benchmark Lending Rate (EBLR) and home loan rate by 50 basis points, keeping with Reserve Bank of India's half per cent cut in policy repo rate. The revised EBLR would be 8.15 per cent as against the old rate of 8.65 per cent. According to revised data on SBI's website, its home loans rate -- which is linked to EBLR -- would be in the range of 7.5-8.45 per cent based on the credit score of the borrowers. The lender also reduced the interest rate on the special deposit scheme (444 days) by 25 basis points. The revised rates will be effective from June 15, 2025. 'We have passed an entire cut in repo rate,' a senior SBI executive said. EBLR works as a benchmark for pricing various loans and its calculation takes into account Credit Risk Premium reflecting the risk associated with a borrower's credit profile and Business Strategy Premium. On the deposit side, the bank reduced the interest rate of the special deposit scheme 'Amrit Vrishti' (444 days) by 25 bps from 6.85 per cent to 6.60 per cent with effect from June 15, 2025, SBI website showed. The card rates for domestic retail term deposits (those below ~ three crore) have not been changed for now. Last month, SBI had reduced the interest on term deposits across maturities by 20 basis points. Bank is still reviewing these rates, SBI executive said. Meanwhile, rating agency CareEdge in a statement said deposit raising remains competitive, especially low-cost Current Account Savings Account (CASA) deposits. Further, a reduction in deposit rates by banks would reduce the cost of deposits with a lag of two-three quarters, impacting the net interest margins (NIMs) for the financial year 2026 (FY26). Indian banks would see pressure on NIM. It is expected to decline around 20-25 bps in FY26 compared to FY25 due to a declining interest rate scenario, with yield on advances expected to fall higher than the cost of deposits, the agency added.

New Delhi, Jun 13 (PTI) Amid rate moderation by the Reserve Bank, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman is scheduled to meet heads of public sector banks (PSBs) on June 27, to discuss host of issues including review of financial performance and implementation of various government schemes. This is going to be the first review meeting after the Reserve Bank on Friday carried out a jumbo policy rate cut of 50 basis points, and unexpectedly reduced the cash reserve ratio for banks to make available more money to lend in a bid to boost the economy. The RBI's six-member monetary policy committee, headed by Governor Sanjay Malhotra and consisting of three external members, voted five to one to lower the benchmark repurchase or repo rate by 50 basis points to 5.5 per cent. It also slashed the cash reserve ratio by 100 basis points to 3 per cent in tranches that will add ₹ 2.5 lakh crore to already surplus liquidity in the banking system. According to sources, the Finance Minister would review the financial performance of public sector banks and their targets for the current financial year. Besides, sources said, the minister may urge public sector banks to increase their lending towards productive sectors to prop of economic growth which hit four-year low of 6.5 per cent in FY25. Comprehensive review of various segments and progress in government schemes including the Kisan Credit Card, PM Mudra and three social security (Jan Suraksha) schemes -- Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana (PMJJBY), Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana (PMSBY) and Atal Pension Yojana (APY) might be discussed during the meeting.
