Anti-ragging regulations: UGC serves show cause notices to seven varsities in Karnataka

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has served show cause notices to seven public and private universities in the State, including the Indian Institute of Management Bangalore (IIMB) and Bengaluru City University, for not implementing the Anti-Ragging Regulations-2009 to prevent ragging on college and university campuses. Apart from IIMB and BCU, public universities including Haveri University, Karnataka Janapada Vishwavidyalaya of Gotagodi, Karnataka State Dr. Gangubai Hangal Music and Performing Arts University of Mysuru, and private universities like Sri Sathya Sai University for Human Excellence of Kalaburagi, and KLE Technological University of Hubballi have failed to implement the rules in the State, as per the commission. The higher education institution and universities have been given 30 days term to implement the anti-ragging regulations, failing which funds being provided for research projects will be withdrawn, in addition to de-recognition or withdrawal of affiliation. 'Ragging in all its forms shall be banned in the entire institution, including its departments, constituent units, all its premises (academic, residential, sports, canteen, etc), whether located within the campus or outside, and in all means of transportation of students, whether public or private. The institution shall take strict action against those found guilty of ragging and/or of abetting ragging,' states the regulation. It is mandatory for all higher education institutions and universities to implement these regulations and submit appropriate documents to the UGC. 'As you are aware, adherence to the UGC Regulation on Ragging, 2009 is mandatory for all Higher Education Institutions. Failure to comply not only violates UGC guidelines but also compromises student safety, particularly in light of increasing concerns about ragging-related distress and campus hostility,' the UGC has said in the notice. Further, the UGC directed the institutions to submit the anti-ragging compliance and get online undertakings from all students within 30 days from the date of notice. The IIMB, in its response to the notice, told The Hindu that the institution has no tolerance for ragging of any kind. 'IIMB has an anti-ragging cell in place. All students are required to submit a declaration that they will not indulge in ragging. All students get several reminders not to indulge in any ragging activities from the administration. Precautionary and oversight measures are also in place. We will follow up with the authorities concerned to have our Institute's name removed from this list.'

The Positive Impact Rating assesses a business school's contribution to societal progress and global good. It was initiated by a coalition of business school experts and is governed by a Swiss association. It is supported by founding endorsers, including WWF, Oxfam International, and the UN Global Compact Switzerland, with funding from VIVA Idea and the Institute for Business Sustainability (IBS). Exceeding global benchmarks Across PIR's seven core impact dimensions, IIMB delivered strong scores with Governance (9.42), Culture (9.32), and Public Engagement (9.29). Additionally, the institute recorded high scores in Programs, Learning Methods, Student Support, and Institute as a Role Model. 'Over the last decade, IIMB has steadily deepened its engagement with the principles of sustainable, responsible business. Our efforts have been deliberate and in close alignment with the institute's mission to create value for business, government, and society. It is encouraging to see that these efforts are recognised through consistent leadership across all impact dimensions,' said Rishikesha T. Krishnan, Director, IIMB, commenting on the achievement. Record participation The sixth edition of the PIR saw a record participation of 86 business schools across 28 countries. Notably, this year's rating introduced a Faculty Survey alongside the student assessment, offering a dual-stakeholder perspective and a comparative view of how both students and faculty perceive their institution's commitment to societal impact.

IIM Bangalore announces net zero targets, new course on responsible business

Indian Institute of Management Bangalore (IIMB) has announced its commitment to achieving Net Zero Scope 2 emissions by 2030 and Scope 1 emissions by 2035, along with releasing the 'IIMB Sustainability Report', coming up with a new core course on 'Responsible Business and Sustainability', and launching a fleet of EVs on its campus in south Bengaluru. The institute's emission targets cover the operations of a densely populated residential campus, home to over 1,200 students, faculty, and staff, and a green expanse of over 20,000 trees, encompassing native, flowering, and fruit-bearing species. 'Climate change is the biggest challenge that mankind is facing, but most people are unaware of it, which puts twice as much responsibility on those of us who are aware,' said Prof. Haritha Saranga, Chairperson, Sustainability Taskforce at IIMB, and faculty in Production & Operations Management (POM), at an event held to mark the World Environment Day on June 5. Sustainability Report The IIMB Sustainability Report, audited by a third party and formally released at the event, details data from FY 2019-20 to FY 2024-25. It carries information on critical initiatives to reduce the carbon footprint, foster innovation, and leverage technology in advancing campus-wide sustainability. These include energy-efficient infrastructure, renewable energy systems, integrated rainwater harvesting and reclaimed water systems. 'Our absolute emissions have reduced by nearly 10% from 2019 to 2024 despite an increase in campus population by 20%. Our per capita emissions have also reduced by nearly 25% during the same period,' Ms. Saranga said. New course on sustainability The event marked the rollout of a new core course for the PGP-2 cohort titled 'Responsible Business and Sustainability'. Delivered to all eight sections of the cohort, the course aims to equip students with critical tools for addressing environmental, managerial, and developmental challenges. 'We are experimenting with horizontal teaching to confront complex problems from multivariate business lenses. Our aim is not to offer immediate solutions, but to foster deep engagement with difficult questions,' said Prof. Sourav Mukherji, Dean - Alumni Relations and Development, and faculty in the OB&HRM department. Launch of EV fleet As part of the institute's shift to sustainable transport, new electric vehicles were launched, including golf carts, a bus, and an ambulance, donated by the PGP 1998 batch. Speaking on behalf of the batch, alumna Sushma Kadali, Strategy Leader, CTO Office, IBM Consulting, said, 'We wanted our contribution to align with IIMB's larger vision, and to reflect our collective ethos.'
