Rail services in Louth suspended over August Bank Holiday weekend

Iarnród Éireann has confirmed that both Northern Commuter and Enterprise services will be disrupted from Saturday 2nd to Monday 4th August, due to extensive works taking place along the Northern Line. The works include track upgrades at Drogheda, overhead line improvements for new battery-electric trains, and accessibility enhancements at Rush and Lusk.
As a result, no trains will run between Malahide and Dundalk across the weekend.
A limited bus substitution service will operate during the disruption, with two main routes serving Drogheda, Balbriggan, Donabate and Connolly Station, and a second route serving Skerries, Rush and Lusk, and Connolly. Enterprise services will also be partially replaced by buses between Dublin and Drogheda or Dundalk, operating to a revised timetable.
Passengers are strongly encouraged to check journey times and connection details in advance on www.irishrail.ie or via the Iarnród Éireann app.
Iarnród Éireann has urged customers to allow extra travel time, especially those making longer journeys or airport connections. Commuters returning to Dublin on Monday should also note that a Sunday service schedule will operate on all DART and commuter lines.
The company says the scheduled works are part of wider infrastructure improvements designed to enhance rail reliability and capacity on key routes in and out of the North East.
Further nationwide rail disruptions are also in place over the weekend, including changes to Dublin–Westport services, Cork's Midleton line, and Rosslare services during the Fleadh Cheoil in Wexford. However, the most significant local impact remains the temporary shutdown of services through Drogheda and Dundalk, with limited replacement options.
Passengers are advised to check for updates before travelling and to book Intercity tickets in advance where possible.
