Rakul Preet Singh: My dad's time in the Indian Army made me strong emotionally
Rakul Preet Singh's entire life has been shaped by the fact that she is an Army kid. Her father Col (Veteran) Kulvinder Singh served in the Regiment of Artillery, the Arm which fires long range guns, rockets & missiles.
Today, on the occasion of Father's Day, she looks back on her formative years with fondness, even though her father would have to be away at a stretch sometimes for duty, 'I grew up in the cantonment, so everyone you know is an Army kid. You think that's a way of life, you don't know any better as a kid. Everyone's father is visiting for a month or a weekend. There would be field postings and peace postings. You become so strong emotionally,' she shares.

Rakul also remembers how the distance never meant the love between her and her dad lessened even a bit, 'There were no mobile phones in the 1990s, we used to talk to dad on trunk calls. When he was stationed in the North East around 1999 due to disturbances at the border, a mediator would pass on our message to him 'sahab bacche chocolates laane ko bol rahe hain', we could hear dad's reply but he couldn't hear us. Today, this helps me in a way that trolls don't affect me. I have seen such strong parents.'
Operation Sindoor was India's answer to the neighbours over growing terrorism. How did Rakul look at it from the POV of an Army kid, who has lived through uncertain times where her own father had to be on the field, we ask. She says, 'I have seen it. Post Kargil, there was Operation Parakram, Forces were deployed again, my father was deployed too. For three months we didn't know whether our forces are coming back, or what is the situation. Then there were disturbances on the border in North East around 1999. I have heard stories of a shoot at sight order on my dad (from the enemy). Childhood se pata tha... you see life from a different lens. Which is why I feel most Army kids will be balanced and centered. You have grown up in an atmosphere of being fearless, small issues are not an issue at all in life. During Operation Sindoor, my dad and I were glued to our TVs and constantly in touch.'
'It's been a wonderful experience, being a father to Rakul. We were two brothers in our family, we didn't have a girl. Rakul was the first girl child. It's something I am sure my parents missed. Any family is incomplete without a daughter. As for me being away for the nation's duty when she and her brother were growing up, my wife should answer this because she was the one handling the kids. One thing for sure common between both Rakul and Aman is that they never troubled her. They would not get cranky that papa is away. My wife did a wonderful job bringing them up. Rakul has seen me stay away for operations for years, like Operation Vijay and Parakram. It is a foregone conclusion that wars do not resolve anything. New Delhi [India], June 15 (ANI): The Indian Army shared a compilation of letters from civilians, expressing support and gratitude for Operation Sindoor. Civilians saluted the Indian Army's efforts and congratulated them for the success of Operation Sindoor. On Sunday, the Additional Directorate General of Public Information, Indian Army, shared a video on X, compiling messages from civilians. Suryanarayana, Chairman of the State Civil Services Retired Officers' Association, congratulated the heads of the Indian Armed Forces for successfully countering attacks by Pakistan. He wrote, 'We salute and congratulate all the heads of Indian Armed Forces for countering the missile attacks launched by Pakistan to strike civilian and military locations in northern and western India. India had hit multiple terror infrastructure facilities in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir under Operation Sindoor.' Rupesh Harishchandra Mainkar wrote to Indian Army saying, 'I want no salary or compensation or recognition or any certificate. I just need your authorisation, uniform, and permission to fight for the country in the Infantry.' Meanwhile, Vaishnu Shankar S remembered the time when he served in the armed forces during the Kargil War. He wrote, 'During the Kargil War, I had the honor to serve as a volunteer, lending my shoulder to the brave hearts at Base Hospital Srinagar. That experience left an indelible mark on my soul, and I want you to know, Sir, that the josh to serve my nation still burns strong within me.' Parul Singh, Chairman and CEO of Parul Charitable Trust, offered help in form of ration, medicines, clothing and vehicles for the army. 'We are standing with you and the Armed Forces to show our solidarity at this stage. We are ready to provide all possible help including Ration, clothing, medicines and vehicles to our fighting troops,' Parul wrote. Meanwhile, on Friday, Admiral Dinesh Kumar Tripathi, Chief of Naval Staff, said that Operation Sindoor is on a pause but is an 'operation in progress'. 'The Operation Sindoor is under pause, it is still underway. As a Naval Chief, I will reserve my comments on this. It's an operation in progress,' Admiral Dinesh Kumar Tripathi told ANI. (ANI)

Indian Army honours Kargil war hero's family under 'Ghar-Ghar Shaurya Samman'
The Indian Army on Sunday (June 15, 2025) paid tribute to the martyrdom of Lance Naik Krishna Kumar, a brave soldier of the 17th Jat Regiment, who laid down his life during the Kargil war. Under the 'Ghar-Ghar Shaurya Samman' initiative, the army presented his family with a certificate of honour and a memento at their residence in Tarkanwali village in Haryana's Sirsa district. A team of army representatives, comprising Havildar Kamlesh Bishroi and soldier Sunil, visited the martyr's family, including his wife Santosh Devi, sons Manoj and Mukesh, and brother Baljeet, an official statement said. During the visit, the family was informed about the Indian Army's initiative in view of the upcoming 26th Kargil Vijay Diwas celebrations to be observed on July 26, 2025. Lance Naik Krishna Kumar made the ultimate sacrifice on May 30, 1999, at the age of 20 while fighting the enemy forces in Kargil. His bravery and selflessness will always be remembered and the nation remains indebted to him, the statement said. As part of the 'Ghar-Ghar Shaurya Samman' scheme, the army is honouring the families of martyrs by presenting them with certificates of honour and mementos at their homes. This initiative aims to establish communication with the families, understand their problems and work towards resolving them. The Indian Army's gesture highlights its commitment to honoring the sacrifices of its brave soldiers and supporting their families, the statement said. Earlier on July 26, 1999, the Indian Army announced the successful culmination of 'Operation Vijay', declaring victory after a nearly three-month-long battle at the icy heights of Kargil, including super-high-altitude locations such as Tololing and Tiger Hill. Kargil was then part of the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir, which in 2020 was bifurcated into the UTs of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh. Known for its jagged peaks and challenging terrains, Kargil now falls in the Union Territory of Ladakh.
