Sextortion cases in NE Florida see sharp increase this year, FBI Jacksonville
During the roundtable meeting, FBI Jacksonville says they've seen a 60% increase in sextortion cases this year across the entire state of Florida. Now they, along with other local agency partners, are urging parents to be aware.
'We continue to see it increase,' FBI Jacksonville Special Agent in Charge Jason Carley said.
He's talking about documented sextortion cases in Northeast Florida.
Sextortion is when a predator asks a child for explicit photos on any online platform. After they get these photos, the predator threatens to publish the images if the child doesn't send them more explicit photos. The demands can escalate and include threats of violence.
Law enforcement leaders attending the roundtable included FBI Jacksonville Special Agent in Charge Jason Carley, St. Johns County Sheriff Rob Hardwick, and Duval County Public Schools Police Chief Jackson Short.
FBI Jacksonville Special Agent in Charge Carley noted that specifically in Northeast Florida, they've noticed the number of sextortion cases increase this year.
'Last year, the numbers were very high, but in just the seven months this year, we're already at the numbers for last year,' FBI Jacksonville Special Agent in Charge Jason Carley said.

The goal of the meeting was to provide awareness to the public about some of the online threats law enforcement has noticed targeting children locally. Those include Sextortion Predators, Traveling Predators, and Predator Networks.
And these agencies plan to keep the public aware throughout the year.
'We do a lot of outreach events doing 'Be Smart,' which is going out to the school districts and talking to the parents after the school day to answer questions and make them aware. To give them a better sense of the threats that exist there online and that leave some of their children vulnerable to be exploited,' Special Agent Carley said.

Jacksonville Beach Police arrest two, recover stolen guns and drugs during traffic stop
The City of Jacksonville Beach Police Department announced the arrest of two people after a traffic stop at 5 3rd Street North on August 17. According to the police department, Officer Rich conducted a traffic stop at 5 3rd Street North for a stop violation. $1B plan to renovate troubled Rice Street Jail approved by Fulton County commissioners
Fulton County Board of Commissioners approved a proposal Wednesday to revitalize the troubled Rice Street Jail and create an additional center for special inmate populations. The proposal was approved 4-1-1. As Channel 2 Action News reported Monday, the proposal to renovate the existing jail and build a new special purpose facility will cost over $1 billion. The proposal was championed by Board Chairman Robb Pitts. [DOWNLOAD: Free WSB-TV News app for alerts as news breaks] The new Special Purpose Building is designed to serve vulnerable populations and offset the future need for outsourcing of inmates to out-of-county jail facilities, according to the proposal. The vote comes amid concerns about the crumbling facility. A report by the Department of Justice last year said the condition of the jail violates the civil rights of the people incarcerated within. The Fulton County Sheriff's Office agreed with the DOJ to a 'court-enforceable' consent order in January. As Channel 2 reported, an investigation into civil rights violations at the Rice Street Jail began in July 2023, in the wake of inmate LaShawn Thompson's death due to 'severe neglect' and an infestation of bed bugs in his cell, as well as multiple other incidents at the facility. Jacksonville mother of 5 missing for 2 days found alive in woods
A Jacksonville woman who disappeared Monday was found alive in the woods Wednesday after a massive rescue effort by police and firefighters. Kayla Bailey was last seen early Monday morning by one of her daughters as she left her home on Maxville Boulevard, her family told Action News Jax. Authorities said she could be in danger, sparking a search that covered the community and nearby wooded areas. >>> STREAM ACTION NEWS JAX LIVE <<< The Sky Action News Jax drone took video of the dense forest where Bailey was found. First responders described the discovery as a relief after she had gone two days without food, water, or shelter. 'She was found in a wooded area just off a trail,' Jacksonville Sheriff's Office Sgt. Michael Monts said. 'She was laying on the ground. She was alive and well when rescuers walked up on her.' RELATED: Missing mom of 5 found alive, Jacksonville police say Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department search teams spotted Bailey's feet from UTVs before reaching her. 'Search teams went out on UTVs … They were able to see her feet in the woods … and went and found her,' JFRD Chief Gary Kuehner said. Authorities mapped out the extensive search, which included officers on horseback, on foot, and by boat.
