Former MLS star Aaron Boupendza dies after falling from building in China
Former MLS star and Gabon international Aaron Boupendza has died aged 28 after falling from a building in China.
Boupendza, who joined Zhejiang FC earlier this year, was in good form with four goals in six matches.
He was previously at FC Cincinnati between 2023 and 2024, where he came up against the likes of Lionel Messi and Sergio Busquets.
"At 28, Boupendza is remembered as a great striker who left a lasting impression at the African Cup of Nations in Cameroon (in 2022)," FEGAFOOT, the Gabonese football federation, said in a statement.
"Trained at CF Mounana and Bordeaux in France, the Gabonese striker joined the Chinese league after a brief spell in Romania.
"FEGAFOOT and the great family of Gabonese soccer offer his biological family their sincere condolences in this difficult time."
Authorities in China have launched an investigation to find out whether the fall was an accident, suicide, or the result of foul play, media reports in Romania said.
There was no official confirmation for the cause of death.
"It is with great sadness that I learn of the tragic death of Aaron Boupendza, a talented centre-forward who brought honour to Gabonese soccer," Gabon president Brice Oligui Nguema said.
"I offer my sincere condolences to his family and friends. May God bless his soul."
The forward played for several clubs in France after first making an impression at former Ligue 1 side Bordeaux, before turning out for the likes of Al-Arabi in Qatar, Saudi side Al-Shabab and Romanian outfit Rapid Bucuresti.

"That's important as we want them to grow, keep investing in rugby and the rugby channel. I think that's the angle we'd like to try explore in partnership with Premier Sports. He added: "Those free-to-air broadcasters are going through some challenges, from a finance budget point of view. What we're seeing is the audience on digital and social are growing exponentially and traditional linear is declining, quite honestly. "I think if we're looking at that mantra of bringing new fans into the sport, we need to be looking at the likes of YouTube as almost the free-to-air of the future. "There's really good example where YouTube and traditional paid broadcasters have worked hand-in-hand to put more subscribers, when they're ready to pay for it, in the right position to subscribe. Prior to that, it's giving an access window in the digital sphere. It's a burgeoning area for us to focus in on." PSG have offered Manchester United a solution in their pursuit of a new striker after Ruben Amorim missed out on his top transfer target. Amorim wanted to welcome Liam Delap to Old Trafford after his breakthrough season in the Premier League but the Ipswich Town star has chosen to join Chelsea instead. Delap's decision has caused Manchester United to look elsewhere and they have been linked with Viktor Gyokeres, Benjamin Sesko and Hugo Ekitike. United are also considering an offer from Paris Saint-Germain to bring Portugal forward Goncalo Ramos to the Theatre of Dreams. According to the Daily Mail, intermediaries have given Amorim the chance to sign Ramos this summer after he was deemed surplus to requirements by PSG boss Luis Enrique. But the Swedish No. 9 has offers from Champions League clubs so United's failure to qualify for any European football could prove costly. Manchester United have also been linked with Jean-Philippe Mateta, who is leaning towards staying at Crystal Palace, and Aleksandar Mitrovic, who has scored 68 goals in 79 games in Saudi Arabia. Unions file complaint over Saudi Arabia's treatment of migrant workers
GENEVA, June 4 (Reuters) - The International Trade Union Confederation and its sister African organisation filed a formal complaint on Wednesday urging the International Labour Organization to investigate Saudi Arabia's labour practices. It raised concerns about mistreatment of migrant construction and domestic workers as the 2034 soccer World Cup looms on the horizon, citing examples of workers being forced to work up to 20 hours a day, denied wages and subjected to beatings. Human rights groups have strongly criticised FIFA's decision to award Saudi Arabia the 2034 World Cup as the kingdom does not have a minimum wage for migrant workers and also enforces the "kafala" system that binds them to a specific employer for the duration of their residence in the country. FIFA and Saudi Arabia's communications office did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Saudi Arabia has previously denied accusations of human rights abuses. "Workers are being treated as disposable in Saudi Arabia. They leave alive and return in coffins," Joel Odigie, General Secretary of ITUC-Africa, said in a statement. ITUC said it had asked the ILO to investigate because it had not seen improvements in workers rights after having tried to engage with the Saudi government. The ILO, the United Nations body that sets international labour standards, told Reuters its governing body would consider the complaint lodged against Saudi Arabia in November. In 2024 the Saudi government announced an expatriate insurance policy to protect workers if their employer defaults on salary payments. In 2021 it amended the kafala system by allowing some migrant workers to leave the country without their employer's permission. Neighbouring Qatar came under similar ITUC criticism ahead of hosting the 2022 World Cup. The ITUC later praised Qatar for introducing labour reforms, though more recently it has raised concerns that they had not been fully implemented.
