Former MLS star Aaron Boupendza dies after falling from building in China

Independent16-04-2025

Former MLS star and Gabon international Aaron Boupendza has died aged 28 after falling from a building in China.
Boupendza, who joined Zhejiang FC earlier this year, was in good form with four goals in six matches.
He was previously at FC Cincinnati between 2023 and 2024, where he came up against the likes of Lionel Messi and Sergio Busquets.
"At 28, Boupendza is remembered as a great striker who left a lasting impression at the African Cup of Nations in Cameroon (in 2022)," FEGAFOOT, the Gabonese football federation, said in a statement.
"Trained at CF Mounana and Bordeaux in France, the Gabonese striker joined the Chinese league after a brief spell in Romania.
"FEGAFOOT and the great family of Gabonese soccer offer his biological family their sincere condolences in this difficult time."
Authorities in China have launched an investigation to find out whether the fall was an accident, suicide, or the result of foul play, media reports in Romania said.
There was no official confirmation for the cause of death.
"It is with great sadness that I learn of the tragic death of Aaron Boupendza, a talented centre-forward who brought honour to Gabonese soccer," Gabon president Brice Oligui Nguema said.
"I offer my sincere condolences to his family and friends. May God bless his soul."
The forward played for several clubs in France after first making an impression at former Ligue 1 side Bordeaux, before turning out for the likes of Al-Arabi in Qatar, Saudi side Al-Shabab and Romanian outfit Rapid Bucuresti.

French prop hits back at 'brave' Pollock following Cardiff scrap Bordeaux-Begles prop Jefferson Poirot has broken his silence following his scrap with Northampton Saints' Henry Pollock after the Champions Cup final in Cardiff. ‌ The France international was suspended for the incident after grabbing the throat of Pollock after the final whistle at the Principality Stadium. ‌ In an interview withTV7 in France, Poirot insisted that he did not intend to get involved but felt the need to after seeing fly-half Matthieu Jalibert in the midst of the scuffle with the England back-row. 'I did sprint back onto the pitch to celebrate," he said. "At that moment, I saw Matthieu being held down by two players and that famous Henry Pollock, brave as he is, coming to push him. "That's why I decided to intervene." Sign up to Inside Welsh rugby on Substack to get exclusive news stories and insight from behind the scenes in Welsh rugby. Article continues below The prop, who has retired from France duty, admits he has "laughed" at the furore caused by the scuffle. 'I admit that all the fuss it caused… I didn't think it would cause all this. It made me laugh a lot, everything I saw or read, all those that were spread in the press,' he said. Poirot also took another dig at Pollock, who has been called up by Andy Farrell for this summer's British & Irish Lions tour of Australia. ‌ 'It's not the image I had of a Lion," he said. "We'll see this summer.' Pollock himself has already addressed the incident in an interview with TNT Sports, saying he was "pretty angry" with the prop. URC talks with S4C ongoing as CEO hints at YouTube aim BKT United Rugby Championship chief executive Martin Anayi says that talks with Welsh language broadcaster S4C are ongoing as he hinted that the league could pursue YouTube as a means to offer free-to-air coverage in the future. ‌ BBC Wales will not show any URC matches from next season, with subscription channel Premier Sports having secured the exclusive rights. However, there is still the chance that S4C will show some games as negotiations continue between the league and the channel. "We're out there having those discussions," said Anayi. "We've put a really good package together on that basis. ‌ "I think it's important that that's not the only option in the market. We're looking at different options to have free-to-air exposure for games across the league. "We have that in Ireland, obviously, and we're looking to do the same in the UK. Those conversations are ongoing." Whether a deal with S4C is signed off - with previous deals having been agreed late in the day - the league would appear to believe that free-to-air coverage might lie away from traditional linear terrestrial television. ‌ "We're working with Premier Sports to see if there's a free-to-air angle - we might look around YouTube for example - that allows us to grow a younger audience without affecting the subscriber audience and will allow us to drive digitally a fanbase that is growing day-by-by to Premier Sports," added Anayi. "That's important as we want them to grow, keep investing in rugby and the rugby channel. I think that's the angle we'd like to try explore in partnership with Premier Sports. He added: "Those free-to-air broadcasters are going through some challenges, from a finance budget point of view. What we're seeing is the audience on digital and social are growing exponentially and traditional linear is declining, quite honestly. ‌ "I think if we're looking at that mantra of bringing new fans into the sport, we need to be looking at the likes of YouTube as almost the free-to-air of the future. "There's really good example where YouTube and traditional paid broadcasters have worked hand-in-hand to put more subscribers, when they're ready to pay for it, in the right position to subscribe. Prior to that, it's giving an access window in the digital sphere. It's a burgeoning area for us to focus in on." Two Welshmen make URC dream team Two Welshmen have been included in the United Rugby Championship's Elite XV, which is picked by the media. ‌ Members of the press were given 10 players in each position to pick from, based on statistics from across the season. Ospreys back-row Jac Morgan and Scarlets back Blair Murray are the only Welsh players included, while the Scarlets also have South African hooker Marnus van der Merwe in the side. League leaders Leinster provide just two players, with lock RG Snyman and full-back Jamie Osborne included. Munster and the Bulls have the biggest share, boasting three players each. The Irish province provide second-row Tadhg Beirne, scrum-half Craig Casey and centre Tom Farrell, while the Bulls offer up the two props - Jan-Hendrik Wessels and Wilco Louw - as well as No. 8 Cameron Hanekom. ‌ Glasgow's Rory Darge joins Morgan and Hanekom - who was also named Next-Gen player of the season - in the back-row, while Stormers fly-half Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu, who previously spent time at Llandovery College, is included along with Sharks centre Andre Esterhuizen and Edinburgh wing Darcy Graham in the backline. Fatigue not an issue for Leinster Leinster assistant coach Jacques Nienaber insists fatigue is not affecting the Irish province's bid to avoid a fourth successive season without silverware. Despite topping the URC as runaway leaders, defeat to Northampton Saints in the Champions Cup semi-final put a massive dent in Leinster's season - having not won Europe's showpiece event since 2018. ‌ Now, the URC acts as their only hope of lifting a trophy - with 2021 being the last time they won the league. However, a laboured win over the Scarlets on the weekend has raised more questions - although Nienaber has dismissed any concerns. "No, not at all," said the 52-year-old South African World Cup winner. "We're cracking on. It's a privilege for any team to be involved in the knock-out stages. Article continues below "It's a privilege for us definitely to be testing ourselves against Glasgow this weekend, the reigning champions, who obviously understand how to play knock-out games if you look at what they did last year. It's a privilege to test ourselves against a quality side like that."

Man Utd offered PSG star after Ruben Amorim's top target joins Chelsea

PSG have offered Manchester United a solution in their pursuit of a new striker after Ruben Amorim missed out on his top transfer target. Amorim wanted to welcome Liam Delap to Old Trafford after his breakthrough season in the Premier League but the Ipswich Town star has chosen to join Chelsea instead. Delap's decision has caused Manchester United to look elsewhere and they have been linked with Viktor Gyokeres, Benjamin Sesko and Hugo Ekitike. United are also considering an offer from Paris Saint-Germain to bring Portugal forward Goncalo Ramos to the Theatre of Dreams. According to the Daily Mail, intermediaries have given Amorim the chance to sign Ramos this summer after he was deemed surplus to requirements by PSG boss Luis Enrique. Paris Saint-Germain spent around £60m to sign the 23-year-old from Benfica in 2023, beating the likes of Manchester United and Arsenal to a deal. It was reported at the time that Bruno Fernandes, now the United captain, was keen for his compatriot to arrive at the club. Ramos scored 14 goals during his first season in Paris and another 18 this term as Enrique's side won a stunning treble, lifting the first ever Champions League trophy and dominating in Ligue 1. But he has struggled for starts ever seen arriving from Benfica – coming on as an 84th-minute substitute in the Champions League final – and has been put up for sale this summer. Despite being behind Cristiano Ronaldo in the pecking order, Ramos has also shown his potential for Portugal, scoring nine goals in 15 games and bagging a World Cup hat-trick in Qatar. At 23, Ramos certainly fits the profile of players Manchester United are keen to sign this summer, having already secured a deal for Matheus Cunha and in talks with Bryan Mbeumo. Gyokeres is another option for the striker position and enjoyed playing under Amorim before he left Sporting Lisbon to take over at Old Trafford. But the Swedish No. 9 has offers from Champions League clubs so United's failure to qualify for any European football could prove costly. Manchester United have also been linked with Jean-Philippe Mateta, who is leaning towards staying at Crystal Palace, and Aleksandar Mitrovic, who has scored 68 goals in 79 games in Saudi Arabia. Last week, Old Trafford CEO Omar Berrada insisted the club have a 'clear and ambitious' plan in regards to this summer's transfer window. 'I can't talk about specifics but I can say we have been planning for many months now,' Berrada told MUTV. 'We were ready for all the different scenarios and now know what we need to do. More Trending 'We have a very clear idea where we need to invest in the squad to improve. So Jason [Wilcox], his team and Ruben [Amorim] have been in talks, as I said, for many months. 'Now it's a question of executing that plan and doing it in a way that is prudent but, at the same time, with ambition.' Manchester United are desperately trying to bolster Amorim's squad following a season in which they finished just 15th in the Premier League. Amorim has around £100m to spend at this stage but that figure will go up following player sales, with Alejandro Garnacho, Jadon Sancho, Marcus Rashford and Antony all set to be moved on. Unions file complaint over Saudi Arabia's treatment of migrant workers

GENEVA, June 4 (Reuters) - The International Trade Union Confederation and its sister African organisation filed a formal complaint on Wednesday urging the International Labour Organization to investigate Saudi Arabia's labour practices. It raised concerns about mistreatment of migrant construction and domestic workers as the 2034 soccer World Cup looms on the horizon, citing examples of workers being forced to work up to 20 hours a day, denied wages and subjected to beatings. Human rights groups have strongly criticised FIFA's decision to award Saudi Arabia the 2034 World Cup as the kingdom does not have a minimum wage for migrant workers and also enforces the "kafala" system that binds them to a specific employer for the duration of their residence in the country. FIFA and Saudi Arabia's communications office did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Saudi Arabia has previously denied accusations of human rights abuses. "Workers are being treated as disposable in Saudi Arabia. They leave alive and return in coffins," Joel Odigie, General Secretary of ITUC-Africa, said in a statement. ITUC said it had asked the ILO to investigate because it had not seen improvements in workers rights after having tried to engage with the Saudi government. The ILO, the United Nations body that sets international labour standards, told Reuters its governing body would consider the complaint lodged against Saudi Arabia in November. In 2024 the Saudi government announced an expatriate insurance policy to protect workers if their employer defaults on salary payments. In 2021 it amended the kafala system by allowing some migrant workers to leave the country without their employer's permission. Neighbouring Qatar came under similar ITUC criticism ahead of hosting the 2022 World Cup. The ITUC later praised Qatar for introducing labour reforms, though more recently it has raised concerns that they had not been fully implemented.
