Two Andhra farmers die by suicide due to mounting debt
Siriboyina Gopala Rao (42), of Tubadu village, consumed pesticide early Tuesday on his farmland. He had leased eight acres for black burley tobacco cultivation, incurring debts over Rs 10 lakh.
Though he harvested 120 quintals of tobacco, only 50 quintals had been sold. Following pressure from lenders on June 16 to repay immediately, he took the drastic step and died at Chilakaluripeta hospital around 3.30 am.
In a separate incident, Nasam Adinarayana (45) of Nadendla village consumed weedicide late Monday night. He had leased 27 acres and grew cotton, chillies, and tobacco.
Despite selling cotton and chillies, 70 quintals of unsold tobacco left him financially burdened. With a debt exceeding Rs 25 lakh, he went missing on June 16 night and was found dead at his farm on Tuesday morning.
On Tuesday, Agriculture Commissioner and Director S Delhi Rao, Palnadu District Collector P Arun Babu, and other senior officials visited the bereaved families in both villages.
Revenue officials have initiated formal inquiries. Village- and mandal-level committees will submit detailed reports.
The twin tragedies underscore the fragile condition of tenant farmers, highlighting their dependence on informal credit and the need for institutional support and intervention to prevent such heartbreaking outcomes.

8 fined for misuse of Rs 1.35L funds under MGNREGA in Palamu
Daltonganj: The Ramgarh block development officer (BDO) on August 14 convicted eight individuals under Section 25 of the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) in Bansdih panchayat under Ramgarh block of Palamu on charges of misuse of over Rs 1.35 lakh govt funds and imposed fine on each of them. The convicted were identified as mukhiya Sangeeta Devi, panchayat sachiv Suraj Kumar Singh, junior engineer with MGNREGA Pankaj Kumar Singh, and rozgar sewak Ravindra Ram. Each of these four was fined Rs 1,000 under Section 25 of the MGNREGA. Also, each of the four would have to pay the outstanding recovery amount, bringing the total to Rs 28,072 per person. The rest were Mahesh Singh, Aarti Singh, Rinki Devi, and Soram Devi — beneficiaries of the Birsa Harit Gram Yojna from Peerhay village under Bansdih panchayat. The amount to be recovered from each, including the Rs 500 fine, are Rs 8,622, Rs 9,975, Rs 4,561, and Rs 5,914, respectively. The eight were ordered to deposit the amounts at the earliest. The convictions followed the detection of irregularities in the Birsa Harit Gram Yojna by James Herenj, an executive committee member of the Jharkhand Social Audit Society. They had misappropriated over Rs 1.35 lakh before the corruption was uncovered by the executive committee member." The additional district programme co-ordinator of MGNREGA in Palamu and deputy development commissioner, M Jawed Hussain, said, "The contravention has been detected and legitimate actions drawn against all the eight." Valuables worth 4.4L stolen from farmer's locked house
Junagadh: A burglary was reported at Juthal village in Junagadh district, where valuables worth Rs 4.41 lakh were stolen from a farmer's house while the family was in Ahmedabad for a medical emergency. The case has been registered at Maliya Hatina police station. Police said the theft occurred between July 30 and Aug 16. According to the complaint filed by Vallabh Patel, 66, he and his wife had been living in Ahmedabad for her medical treatment after she fractured her leg a month and a half ago. Patel returned to his village on July 28 to look after his groundnut crop, stayed for three days and then went back to Ahmedabad. On Aug 16, a neighbour informed him that the locks of his house were broken and his motorcycle was lying outside. When Patel rushed back, he found that the cupboards had been broken open and gold ornaments along with cash were missing. A case has been filed against unidentified persons under Sections 305(A), 331(3) and 331(4) of the BNS, and further investigation is underway. 2 UP drug peddlers held with 60kg ganja
Gumla: Two drug peddlers from Uttar Pradesh, transporting 60kg ganja in a car from Phulbani in Kandhamal district of Odisha to Uttar Pradesh, were held from Larwa hamlet under the Kolebira police station limits in Simdega on Sunday, police said. The arrested are vehicle driver Sanjay Kumar (35) of Sarai Mamrej police station limits in Prayagraj district of Uttar Pradesh and Akash Kumar Yadav (27) of Alapur village under the Mirganj police station limits in Jaunpur district of Uttar Pradesh, police added. Officer in-charge of the Kolebira police station Harsh Kumar said, "Acting on inputs received by Simdega deputy commissioner (DC) Kanchan Singh and superintendent of police (SP) M Arshi, we put up barricades on the Main Road in Kolebira and on the Larwa Road. A suspicious car was searched at Larwa Road barricade and 60 kg of ganja, valued over Rs 5 lakh in the market, was seized. Two peddlers have been booked under sections 20 (B) II (C) / 24(C) of the NDPS Act and under sections 318 (4) and 319 (2) of the BNS for using fake registration number of the two states. " Quoting the arrested peddlers, the OC added, "Pande from Bhadoli police station limits in Bhadohi district of Uttar Pradesh is the kingpin of the illegal trade.
