Odisha launches AWESOME app to monitor anganwadis
Addressing over 400 officers at a state-level capacity-building workshop for child development project officers (CDPOs), she said the strength of child development efforts lies in the capability of CDPOs at the grassroots, and they will play a central role in the transformation.
The deputy chief minister commended their contribution in the success of the Subhadra scheme and called for stronger women-led development at the local level. She launched the 'Anganwadi Welfare and Service Oversight Monitoring Everywhere' (AWESOME) app on the occasion. This digital tool has been designed to strengthen infrastructure monitoring and service delivery at anganwadi centres.
Parida also flagged off the 'Aasa Jiba Anganwadi' (Visit anganwadi centre) campaign, which will run from August 1 to 15. She urged citizens to visit their nearest anganwadi centres, assess cleanliness, infrastructure and functioning, and share their feedback to inform service improvements.
The campaign aligns with World Breastfeeding Week (August 1-7) and aims at fostering community ownership of early childhood development.
Chief secretary Manoj Ahuja highlighted the central role of health, nutrition and early childhood education in the Vision Odisha 2036 framework and encouraged CDPOs to adopt people-centric strategies.
An MoU was also signed between the Women and Child Development department and the National Institute of Public Cooperation and Child Development (NIPCCD) to ensure continuous training and capacity building of ICDS officers and staff in Odisha.
Additional director of NIPCCD Sanghamitra Barik said this partnership would enhance technical knowledge and professional skills at the field level. Principal secretary of Women and Child Development department Shubha Sharma, director Monisha Banerjee and senior officers were present.

Odisha's first breastfeeding centre opens in capital
BHUBANESWAR: Deputy chief minister Pravati Parida inaugurated the state's first public breastfeeding centre at the Odisha State Commission for Women during the state-level celebration of World Breastfeeding Week on Wednesday. Speaking on the occasion, Parida said the state government will set up similar centres at railway stations, bus stands, markets and other public places that are frequented by women. 'These centres will provide a safe and peaceful space where new mothers can nurse their children comfortably in complete privacy,' said the deputy CM who is also the Women and Child Development (WCD) minister. In railway stations, particularly, a female attendant will be deployed at each station to assist nursing mothers, she informed. Parida further added that the government also has plans to open breastfeeding centres at all its offices and other public service centres where woman visit regularly for grievance redressal. Stating that breastfeeding is not just beneficial for newborns but also the new mothers, the deputy CM said it has significant health benefits like reduced risk of breast and ovarian cancer in women and improved mental well-being for both mother and child.

Breastfeeding centres to be set up at stations
Bhubaneswar: The Odisha government will set up breastfeeding centres in various public places, including railway stations and bus stands, Deputy Chief Minister Pravati Parida said here on Wednesday. 'We will open dedicated centres for breastfeeding in public places. In the railway stations, a lady attendant will be deployed at the breastfeeding centre so that lactating mothers can breastfeed their babies in a women-friendly atmosphere,' Parida told mediapersons after gracing the State-level celebration of World Breastfeeding Week 2025 here. The Deputy Chief Minister, who is in charge of Women and Child Development Department, said there is an emotional and physical bond between mother and child. Breastfeeding brings the child closer to the mother's heart, she said. She stressed the significant health benefits of breastfeeding, both for mothers and infants, including reduced risks of breast and ovarian cancers in women and improved mental well-being for both during the first six months of exclusive breastfeeding. Parida called upon all stakeholders to increase the rate of breastfeeding centres across Odisha and encouraged collective societal responsibility in promoting breastfeeding. She virtually inaugurated the first public breastfeeding room at the office of the Odisha State Commission for Women. The Deputy Chief Minister recommended that similar breastfeeding spaces should be established in all public and private institutions across the State to support working and lactating mothers. During the event, 'Lok Kalyan' – an online web link form for NGO registration – was officially launched by Parida.

Tamil Nadu Woman Donates 300 Litres Of Breast Milk, Helps Over 1000 Babies
Tamil Nadu: A 33-year-old homemaker from Kattur in Tiruchirappalli district here has donated over 300 litres of breast milk, helping save the lives of thousands of premature and critically ill infants, officials said. Selva Brindha, a mother of two, donated a total of 300.17 litres over 22 months—from April 2023 to February 2025—to the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Government Hospital (MGMGH) Milk Bank. Her contribution accounted for nearly half of the total breast milk collected by the milk bank during the 2023-24 period, a hospital official said. Encouraged by a non-governmental organisation, Brindha's consistent service earned her a place in both the 'Asia Book of Records' and the 'India Book of Records'. In recognition of her remarkable contribution, officials at the milk bank will felicitate her during the valedictory of 'World Breastfeeding Week' on August 7.
