Generation ROC: Local third graders win second at state math competition
EAST ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — You may not be smarter than this trio of third graders, but that's okay—they're just that good! The team from East Rochester Elementary School already sits atop the county having earned the highest regional scores in the First In Math competition.
They quickly and excitedly started to prepare to compete for state gold.
'I knew I would have to practice a lot, and I knew it would take great effort. I thought it would be very fun and I knew we would do a good job,' says Charles Parr.
'[I was] really excited, because like two of my best friends were doing it too, and they got highest too, so we got to do it together,' adds teammate, Matthew Paratore.
Charles, Matthew, and Daniel Walter spent weeks practicing together for the New York State tournament in Albany. Even though two had tried this before, this was Charles' first time in the statewide spotlight.
'We had this board and we would practice putting cards with different numbers and trying to sort them out so they would make wheels worth points,' Charles explains to News 8's Mikhaela Singleton.
Solving problems that might make your head spin and doing it with ease, the boys had to fill a grid board with cards that each had a number at each corner. Lining up a square of cards creates a wheel with one set of numbers in the middle and the team earns points for whatever factor all the numbers have in common.
All say they were nervous after passing the semi-finals and moving on to the final stage where they had to explain their mathematics concepts to judges from around New York. When the time came for the awards ceremony, they were plenty thrilled to take the second place medals.
'We hear something with 'east', and we are like that's us, we made it, and then we just got so excited,' says Matthew.
'I remember running up to the stage and it was so funny, because when all of us were on the stage we were like, yay we're on the stage!' says Daniel excitedly.
They're still holding out for gold next year, hoping to keep their team of three musketeers together, and there's even an encouraging message for their future friendly competition.
'It's really fun and you would probably like it and even if you lose, you are still proud because you still tried your best,' Daniel says.
To top it all off and now that they've returned, the East Rochester Union Free School District honored all three boys at this week's school board meeting. Board members presented the boys with recognition of achievement certificates and trophies to celebrate their hard work.

Men's and women's hockey schedules for 2026 Milan Olympics released
Associated Press The International Ice Hockey Federation unveiled the schedule Tuesday for the men's and women's tournaments at the 2026 Olympics in Milan and Cortina. Women's hockey starts on Feb. 5 with the U.S. against Czechia and Canada versus Finland among the opening games. The U.S. and Canada renew their rivalry in the preliminary round on Feb. 10, and the gold-medal game is set for Feb. 19. Men's hockey with the return of NHL players opens the following day with Finland facing Slovakia and host Italy against Sweden. Without Russia in the 12-team field, the U.S. is grouped with Germany, Latvia and Denmark and will play each of them in a round robin. The U.S. opens Feb. 12 against Latvia, the same day Canada faces Czechia. The NHL's best are participating for the first time since 2014 in Sochi. 'It's great that the NHL players are back in the Olympics,' U.S. general manager Bill Guerin said. 'Obviously it's the biggest sports stage in the world, and we're all happy we're back involved.' No teams are eliminated from group play on the men's side. The top four advance to the quarterfinals, with the remaining eight taking part in a qualification round. Games will take place on NHL-sized rinks at Milano Santagiulia and Milano Rho arenas. The final is scheduled for Feb. 22 as the last event of the Olympics before the closing ceremony. The schedule release came a day after the federations involved announced the first six players named to their respective rosters. The U.S. picked all skaters: forwards Matthew and Brady Tkachuk, Auston Matthews and Jack Eichel and defensemen Quinn Hughes and Charlie McAvoy. Finland is the defending Olympic champion from the Beijing bubble in 2022, when the NHL pulled out because of pandemic-related scheduling issues, and the Russians won in 2018. Canada has won the past two involving NHL players, and GM Doug Armstrong hopes for a third. 'I'm excited about our group," Armstrong said. "I know our group wants to go there and wants to put their best foot forward. There's no guarantees in this sport, but I know we're going to go with the right attitude.' ___ AP NHL: in this topic

King and Queen welcome Peter Phillips' girlfriend to Royal Ascot
The King and Queen enjoyed a day at the races as they welcomed the girlfriend of the Princess Royal's son to the royal fold. Charles and Camilla hosted guests in the royal box on the first day of Royal Ascot including the King's nephew Peter Phillips and his partner, NHS nurse Harriet Sperling. She made an appearance for the first time in the carriage procession the royal family make onto the famous Berkshire racecourse to signal the start of the day. The royal procession is celebrating its 200th anniversary, a tradition begun during the reign of George IV in 1825 when the monarch was accompanied by the Duke of Wellington. The King and Queen rode in the first carriage with Prince Faisal, a member of the Saudi royal family, and Lady Sarah Keswick, one of the Queen's official companions. Behind them travelled the Princess Royal with Camilla's sister Annabel Elliot and the Duke and Duchess of Wellington and they were followed by a coach carrying Anne's son Peter Phillips and his girlfriend. Other royals spotted among the crowds included Princess Beatrice and her mother Sarah, Duchess of York and Zara and Mike Tindall. The head of state and his wife have continued Queen Elizabeth II's close association with the Berkshire race meet but they had no luck with the sport of Kings when their horse Reaching High was well beaten in the Ascot Stakes. The late Queen was a passionate owner and breeder of thoroughbreds and had more than 20 Royal Ascot winners during her 70-year reign. Charles and Camilla have taken on her stable of horses and enjoyed their first Royal Ascot winner in 2023 when their horse Desert Hero triumphed in the King George V states.

Royal Ascot racegoers hoping to see King and Queen
Royal Ascot racegoers are expecting the King and Queen to join them for the opening day of the sporting event and major social occasion. Charles and Camilla, both fans of racing, are likely to arrive in the famous carriage procession along the course and past the stands that will welcome hundreds of thousands of punters during the five-day meet in Berkshire. The head of state and his wife will be hoping for a winner in the Ascot Stakes when their horse Reaching High, trained by Willie Mullins, takes on other thoroughbreds. Mullins, reflecting on the thoroughbred's narrow defeat at Leopardstown racecourse in Ireland, said: 'I've been very happy since his first run, he did everything nicely at Leopardstown and if he could run a similar type of race at Ascot I would be very pleased.' Queen Elizabeth II was a passionate owner and breeder of thoroughbreds and had more than 20 Royal Ascot winners during her 70-year reign. Charles and Camilla have taken on her stable of horses and enjoyed their first Royal Ascot winner in 2023 when their horse Desert Hero triumphed in the King George V Stakes.
