
Scientists develop methanol breathalyser that could prevent thousands of poisonings each year
Australian researchers have developed a prototype methanol 'breathalyser' capable of detecting small concentrations of the toxic substance in alcoholic drinks or on someone's breath.
Methanol poisoning is a problem that affects thousands of people every year, killing 20-40% of victims, according to Doctors Without Borders. In November, Australian backpackers Holly Bowles and Bianca Jones, along with British lawyer Simone White, were among six tourists to die in a suspected mass methanol poisoning in Laos.
Methanol, an industrial alcohol, looks and smells similar to the regular alcohol found in beer, wine and spirits. But when found in alcoholic drinks – usually as a result of bootleg alcohol production – methanol can be deadly. Consuming even small amounts can lead to blindness, convulsions and death.
Yet current methods for detecting the presence of methanol remain complex and expensive, and unsuitable for travellers.
University of Adelaide researchers have developed a wireless methanol sensor – roughly a centimetre squared – capable of reliably detecting methanol at concentrations as low as 50 parts per billion (below the level of poisoning) in vapour from alcoholic drinks or on someone's breath.
'Our sensor will show that you can detect very low concentrations of methanol in a very simple way,' said co-author Prof Dusan Losic, from the University of Adelaide's school of chemical engineering, who researches the use of nanotechnologies to address global problems in health, energy and the environment.
The approach, described in the American Chemical Society journal Sensors, combined graphene – a highly sensitive and conductive substance – with a porous material called a metal organic framework, which detected methanol based on its size. These were 3D printed like ink on to ceramic to create the sensor.
The device is currently a prototype and not yet commercialised, Losic said, however the materials involved are low cost and the process is 'scalable'.
'There is a pressing need for affordable, portable devices capable of quickly identifying methanol presence in breath samples and alcoholic products, suitable for use by healthcare providers or the public,' the researchers write in the article.
Current methods for detecting methanol are not readily available in regions where most poisoning incidents are reported.
One common approach, called gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, relied on specialised equipment and expertise, said Prof Ian Rae, from the University of Melbourne's school of chemistry who was not involved in the research. This relied on vaporising and sorting molecules based on their size and chemical properties.
The sensor offered another approach to separating the two types of alcohol, with the metal organic frameworks acting like a 'molecular trap' designed to catch methanol, he said.
Methanol poisoning was a major problem for local populations in places such as the Mediterranean and south-east Asia, as well as travellers to those places, said Dr Ian Musgrave, a pharmacologist and toxicologist at the University of Adelaide who was not involved in the research.
'The issue is that a lot of the methods for detecting methanol are not really available in these places, when the gold standard is using gas chromatography.'
There were chemical methods available too, Musgrave said, and these were often used by home brewers. 'But, if you're drinking in a bar in Laos, you don't want to pull out a jar of sulfuric acid in order to determine if your drink has methanol in it,' he said.
A simple, rapid, portable device that could distinguish methanol from regular alcohol (ethanol) and other contaminants, would greatly assist in avoiding and treating poisonings, he said.

One of the most popular sunscreen brands singled out by a consumer group for failing to meet Australia's strict SPF 50+ regulations has furiously hit back at the controversial experiment. But consumer group CHOICE has revealed it was 'so perturbed' by the results of its extraordinary first experiment - which found Ultra Violette's Lean Screen SPF50+ Mattifying Zinc Skinscreen returned an SPF of just 4 - that it conducted a second test at an independent lab in Germany. CHOICE found that 16 of 20 sunscreens tested in Australia failed to meet the SPF protection claims on its labels, including big brands such as Cancer Council, Neutrogena, Bondi Sands, Coles and Woolworths. Ultra Violette's 'skinscreen', which retails for $52, was called out by CHOICE for having the 'most significant failure' in the entire experiment during the watchdog's first round of rigorous testing. 'We were so perturbed by the results that we decided to delay publishing and test a different batch of the Ultra Violette sunscreen at a completely different lab in Germany to confirm the results,' CHOICE experts said. 'Those results came back with a reported SPF of 5.' Just weeks before the bombshell report dropped, Ultra Violette released a slick social media video showcasing the costly process the business says it undertakes to ensure its products meet SPF requirements - singling out how it spent $150,000 on testing. 'Do you know how SPF is actually tested? Making our SKINSCREENS can cost up to $150,000 in testing alone,' the brand said at the time. 'We take the integrity of our products pretty damn seriously - no cutting corners here. We ensure you have the best protection (from both UVA and UVB), and the added skincare benefits to match, no matter where in the world you are.' The video, narrated by Ultra Violette's co-founder Ava Chandler-Matthews, took viewers behind the scenes of how the company tests its sunscreen products - dwelling on how it cost $150,000 to test them. 'Because we formulate our own products at Ultra Violette, we have to pay for all the testing upfront... It's expensive because you do it on real human skin,' Ava said. She explained that the brand undertake the costly process of SPF testing 'multiple times throughout the product development journey'. 'How it works is they apply a test patch of the sunscreen, then they burn you with a UV lamp, with and without the sunscreen,' Ava said. 'The amount of time it takes for your skin to burn is what determines the SPF, but that's the UVB test. The UVA test is done in a lab. We test to Australian standards first because that's always the hardest. After that, we test to FDA standards. 'All of our sunscreens globally are broad spectrum.' Ultra Violette responds to CHOICE At Ultra Violette we take misleading claims made about our products very seriously. Ultra Violette is deeply committed to the health and safety of our customers and only work with reputable, TGA licensed manufacturers who perform substantial quality release testing in accordance with the strictest SPF standards in the world. Ava claimed the brand went the extra mile by doing 'additional' testing on all of their sunscreens because, as she said, 'UVA protection is obviously very important to us'. 'The SPF testing is really just the start. When you own all your own formulations, you have to do stability testing which is to make sure the product is stable and contains the UV actives over time as well as clinical and panel testing,' she said. 'Developing all your own formulations, owning your own sunscreen brand and making that sunscreen brand global is really expensive,' she concluded. Following CHOICE's bombshell report, Ultra Violette disputed the claims, saying: 'Given our commitment to producing the highest quality sunscreens for consumers, we do not accept these results as even remotely accurate. 'Lean Screen contains 22.75 per cent zinc oxide, a level at which, when applied sufficiently, would render a testing result of SPF 4 scientifically impossible.' The brand said Lean Screen, like all UV formulas, are made by reputable, TGA-licensed manufacturers and tested to meet the strictest global SPF standards. 'To ensure complete transparency and peace of mind for our customers, when we were first alerted to CHOICE's testing, we immediately initiated another 10 person test on the batch in question at an independent lab,' an Ultra Violette spokesperson said. 'We proactively initiated another urgent SPF test of the batch in question in April this year (2025). We retested our product and the results have come back at 61.7, which is above the threshold required by the TGA to make a 50+ claim. 'CHOICE's recent retest only included five participants, where two results were considered non validated, resulting in a sample size of only three. Monash IVF chief executive resigns after company's second embryo transplant bungle
Monash IVF boss Michael Knaap has resigned in the wake of the reproductive healthcare company's second embryo transplant bungle. In a statement to the ASX, Monash IVF said the board had accepted Knaap's resignation as chief executive officer and managing director. This week, Monash IVF admitted to a second bungled embryo implant. In April, Monash IVF revealed a woman had given birth to the child of an unrelated woman after a separate incorrect embryo transplant in Queensland. Monash IVF said in the statement on Thursday that it 'acknowledges and respects [Knaap's] decision'. 'Since his appointment in 2019, Michael has led the organisation through a period of significant growth and transformation, and we thank him for his years of dedicated service,' the statement said. Malik Jainudeen, Monash IVF chief financial officer and company secretary, will serve as acting chief executive. Experts are now calling for national regulation of the sector, something that the health minister, Mark Butler, said would be discussed on Friday when health ministers meet in Melbourne. Currently, IVF is regulated by state and territory laws, but a more consistent, federal approach is being urged. Clinics must be licensed by the Reproductive Technology Accreditation Committee (RTAC), a subcommittee of the Fertility Society of Australia and New Zealand (FSANZ). That's the unit that carries out audits, including on some assisted reproductive technology (ART) clinics internationally. Clinics must also follow ethical guidelines from the National Health and Medical Research Council. FSANZ said in a statement about the latest Monash IVF incident that Australia's fertility care system was 'among the safest, most transparent, and tightly regulated in the world'. FSANZ president Dr Petra Wale said errors were 'exceedingly rare' although 'deeply difficult for those affected'. FSANZ has called for a nationally consistent framework for ART, and an independent statutory authority to 'strengthen oversight and trust'. It said that while the clinical standards in IVF clinics are nationally consistent, each state and territory has its own legislation. Transitioning the RTAC to an independent statutory authority would strengthen the accreditation scheme with 'the regulatory clarity and operational flexibility needed to uphold rigorous standards and respond swiftly to emerging risks', it said, while a national approach to ART would 'strengthen transparency, streamline governance, and enhance patient care across the country'. The latest audit of Australian ART facilities found 172 non-conformance reports (NCRs), but only one was 'major'. Other countries audited, including New Zealand, had higher rates of NCRs.
