Bank of America profit beats estimates as market turmoil boosts trading

Zawya3 days ago
Bank of America beat estimates for second-quarter profit on Wednesday, driven by tumultuous markets that helped its traders bring in more revenue, while its interest income also rose.
Banks' trading desks benefited from market turbulence as clients reacted to shifting U.S. trade policies and escalating geopolitical tensions during the second quarter.
The bank's shares, which have gained over 4% this year, fell nearly 1% after markets opened. BofA's stock has underperformed its major peers and the broader KBW Bank Index in 2025.
Peers JPMorgan Chase and Citigroup also beat second-quarter profit estimates, helped by gains in their trading divisions.
"We continue to see solid consumer spending," and commercial loan growth, Bank of America CEO Brian Moynihan told analysts. "Our clients continue to see clarity with the changes in trade and tariffs, and now with the tax bill passing, we can see them start to understand the future and expect them to behave accordingly."
BofA's sales and trading revenue jumped 15% to $5.4 billion, notching a record for the second quarter and marking 13 consecutive quarters of year-over-year revenue growth.
In trading, equities revenue surged 10%, also hitting a record for the latest quarter, while fixed income, currencies, and commodities revenue jumped 19%.
"We're also benefiting right now from repositioning - a lot of geopolitical uncertainty, a lot of rate changes, elections last year leading to new policies this year, supply chain changes," Chief Financial Officer Alastair Borthwick told reporters.
BofA's profit was $7.1 billion, or 89 cents per share, for the three months ended June 30, compared with $6.9 billion, or 83 cents per share, a year earlier.
Wall Street had expected BofA to earn 86 cents a share in the quarter, according to estimates compiled by LSEG.
The lender set aside $1.6 billion in provisions for credit losses in the second quarter, compared with $1.5 billion a year earlier.
RECORD NII
Rate cuts by the Federal Reserve last year have helped reduce the cost of deposits for banks, allowing them to pocket more net interest income - the difference between what they earn on loans and pay on deposits.
BofA's NII rose 7% to a second-quarter record of $14.7 billion, thanks to fixed-rate asset repricing as well as deposit and loan growth.
On a fully-taxable equivalent basis, BofA reported record NII for any quarter, it said. The bank had previously forecast record NII for 2025, and Moynihan reiterated that target last month.
BofA continues to expect higher NII in the second half of 2025, Borthwick said. The bank reiterated that its interest income would reach $15.5 billion to $15.7 billion in the fourth quarter.
Average loans and leases rose 7% to $1.13 trillion in the quarter, growing broadly across its businesses.
BofA expects to see loan growth in mid-single-digit percentages in the second half, Borthwick said.
The bank also expects its expenses to flatten or decline in 2025.
Moynihan said the bank is working to keep headcount down. Bank of America's headcount rose marginally to 213,388 as of June 30.
INVESTMENT BANKING LAGS
BofA's investment banking fees slid 9% to $1.4 billion in the second quarter, lagging rivals. Investment banking fees rose 7% at JPMorgan, 13% at Citigroup and 9% at Wells Fargo, which benefited from rebounding activity at the end of the quarter. Dealmaking stalled in April over U.S. President Donald Trump's shifting trade policies, geopolitical tensions, and elevated interest rates. However, banking executives and analysts have expressed optimism about merger and acquisition opportunities and foresee more transactions in the second half.
BofA said it was encouraged by rebounding activity in May and June.
Last month, BofA projected investment banking fees to be roughly $1.2 billion, while trading revenue was expected to grow by mid- to high-single digits.
Bank of America said the bank and industry have been working on understanding demand for stablecoin, and investors can expect the company to move forward on it. The lender had earlier said it could launch stablecoins.
Stablecoins, a type of cryptocurrency designed to maintain a constant value, are commonly used by crypto traders to move funds between tokens.
Some analysts expressed concerns over the bank's long-term growth potential.
"We think BofA faces more risk in traditional lending to consumers and small businesses if the jobs market faces challenges ahead," said Kenneth Leon, director of equity research at CFRA Research.
"While we expect BofA to benefit from rising capital markets activity, we believe there are better-positioned peers to capitalize on investment banking," he added.

Nasdaq, S&P 500 hit fresh records as trade talks, tech earnings in focus

The S&P 500 and Nasdaq touched fresh record peaks on Monday, as investors hoped for trade breakthroughs and geared up for a week of tech earnings that could set the tone for Wall Street. At 09:44 a.m., the S&P 500 gained 18.34 points, or 0.29%, to 6,315.13 and the Nasdaq Composite gained 110.40 points, or 0.53%, to 21,006.05. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 38.06 points, or 0.09%, to 44,380.25, just 1.57% shy of its all-time high. Investors were hoping for some progress in trade talks after U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick on Sunday, who expressed confidence over striking a trade deal with the European Union. However, EU diplomats said the 27-member bloc is exploring a broader set of possible counter-measures against the United States, as hopes for a breakthrough deal with Washington dwindled. Trump has threatened to slap 30% tariffs on imports from Mexico and the EU, keeping markets on edge. The president has also sent letters to other trading partners, including Canada, Japan and Brazil, setting blanket tariff rates ranging from 20% to 50%. Despite Trump's persistent attacks and the August 1 tariff deadline, the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq reached new heights recently as investors believed that the economic fallout from tariffs might not be as dire as once feared. All eyes are on marquee names such as Alphabet and Tesla, whose results this week will kick off the "Magnificent Seven" earnings parade, and could set the tone for Wall Street. Shares of Tesla and Alphabet were up 1.7% and 0.5%, respectively. "There's still a ton of trade uncertainty, and so I think the focus on earnings has given investors some things to be excited about," said Ross Mayfield, investment strategy analyst at Baird. "There's a lot of optimism around those big tech earnings and AI demand that should continue to help indexes." On Monday, Verizon gained 2.2% after boosting its annual profit forecast. The stock also drove the communications sector, which emerged as the top gainer among other sectors. Meanwhile, shares of Domino's Pizza rose 2% after the world's largest pizza chain surpassed analysts' expectations for second-quarter U.S. same-store sales. The week is light on the economic data front, with only notable indicators being weekly jobless claims figures and the July business activity report expected on Thursday. Investors will closely analyze Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell's remarks on Tuesday for any clues on the central bank's next move, especially after last week's mixed inflation signals. Traders have largely ruled out a July rate cut, and are now pegging the odds at about 60% for a September reduction, according to CME Group's FedWatch tool. Advancing issues outnumbered decliners by a 2.22-to-1 ratio on the NYSE and by a 2.33-to-1 ratio on the Nasdaq. The S&P 500 posted seven new 52-week highs and four new lows, while the Nasdaq Composite recorded 41 new highs and 20 new lows. Operating Income for the second quarter was Dh1.3 billion, an increase of 7.4 per cent year on year. Net interest income rose 0.8 per cent compared to the first half of 2024 due to growth in total assets by 18 per cent year on year, despite interest income being impacted by 100 bps rate cut in the second half of last year. Despite external pressures on the net interest margin, on a risk adjusted basis, RAKBank's net interest margin improved by 37 bps to 3.3 per cent in the first half of 2025 compared to 2.9 per cent in the first half of 2024, as the bank shifts toward secured, low-risk assets. Non-interest income increased by 35.6 per cent from last year to Dh795 million, driven by the bank's efforts to diversify its fee income, forex income and episodic gains in investment income. Net impairment charges fell 52.5 per cent compared to the same period last year to Dh173 million, as the bank's portfolio quality improved with impaired loan ratio dropping to 1.9 per cent from 2.4 per cent as at the first half of 2024. Net impairment charge to average loans and advances ratio was at 0.7 per cent for the first half of 2025 compared to 1.7 per cent during the same period last year. Raheel Ahmed, Group Chief Executive Officer, RAKBank, said: 'We have, once again, achieved strong balance sheet growth and fee income. This growth reflects the strength of our diversified business model and continued balance sheet momentum. Portfolio credit quality remains robust with cost of risk improving to 0.7 per cent in H1 2025 from 1.7 per cent in H1 2024. On the back of the UAE's strong economic fundamentals, we remain confident in delivering a solid performance in the second half of 2025, supported by our strategic execution and sustained business momentum. However, we remain cautious about the geopolitical and global economic uncertainties, including the loosening of monetary policy across key economies and its impact on margins.'

India markets regulator allows Jane Street to resume trading, sources say

India's markets regulator has allowed Jane Street to restart trading after the U.S. high-frequency trading firm deposited $567 million, two sources aware of the matter said on Monday. The regulator sent an email to the firm on Friday in which it said that following the deposit of the money the restrictions imposed by its interim order are no longer applicable, said the sources who declined to be named because they are not authorised to speak to media. In an interim order issued on July 3, the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) had barred the firm from buying and selling securities in the Indian market and froze $567 million of its funds. Jane Street could resume trading if an equivalent amount was deposited in an account that gives the regulator rights over the money until its investigation is complete, the order stated. Email queries sent to Jane Street and SEBI were not answered immediately. The country's stock exchanges, the National Stock Exchange of India Ltd and BSE Ltd., have been directed to closely monitor the activity of the U.S.-based quant trading firm, the sources said. The two exchanges are yet to facilitate Jane Street's buying and selling of Indian securities, said one of the sources. "While the firm has been allowed to resume trading in India, it has given an undertaking to SEBI that it will not trade in options. The firm also does not intend to trade in cash till it has explained its trades to SEBI," the second source said.
