Asian currencies retreat after bonds rally; US fiscal, trade concerns persist

Zawya2 days ago

Reuters - Asian currencies reversed course to trade lower on Tuesday as a rally in global bonds whipsawed markets that remained concerned about U.S. fiscal health and President Donald Trump's erratic trade policies. The Malaysian ringgit fell 0.3% against a stronger dollaer after reaching a three-week high earlier in the session.
The Singaporean dollar, Indonesian rupiah, and the Indian rupee weakened between 0.2% and 0.4%. U.S. Treasury yields slumped after 30-year bonds mimicked a steep price rally in longer-term Japanese debt and as investors mulled the latest developments in U.S. tariff policy. Trump's policy reversals and his sweeping spending and tax-cut bill have turned investors off U.S. assets. In the latest example, two days after threatening to slap 50% tariffs on imports from the European Union next month, Trump restored a July 9 deadline for talks. "There are three major things driving not just Asia but global markets at the moment: concerns about U.S. debt and deficits, trade deals and the diversification away from the dollar," said Michael Wan, a senior currency analyst at MUFG. "The big picture is that U.S. assets are reasonably over-valued, and there has been a build-up of these assets over time which could impact the general flow of assets moving forward." Asian currencies have benefited from broader weakness in the greenback this month, with the dollar index heading for a fifth straight month of declines against a basket of currencies, which would mark the longest such losing streak since 2017. Taiwan's dollar is on course to log its best monthly performance on record, buoyed by a historic 6% spike over two days in early May. It was last trading flat at 29.939 per dollar. The South Korean won, which has gained more than 4% so far this month, was last down 0.2%. The Thai baht weakened 0.4%. Thailand's commerce ministry has warned that exports in the second half will face a risk of U.S. tariffs after a moratorium expires in July. Meanwhile, the country's finance minister said the tariffs could see the economy stumble, with growth potentially falling to just over 1% this year.
Equities in Bangkok fell as much as 1.6% to a near one-month low. Other regional stock markets were also weaker with shares in Kuala Lumpur, Taipei and Seoul falling between 0.3% and 0.9%. Musk to exit US government role after rare break with Trump

Billionaire Elon Musk on Wednesday announced he was leaving his role in US government, intended to reduce federal spending, shortly after his first major break with President Donald Trump over his signature spending bill. "As my scheduled time as a Special Government Employee comes to an end, I would like to thank President Donald Trump for the opportunity to reduce wasteful spending," he wrote on his social media platform X. "The DOGE mission will only strengthen over time as it becomes a way of life throughout the government," he added. The South African-born tech tycoon had said Trump's bill would increase the deficit and undermine the work of Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), which has fired tens of thousands of people. Musk — who was a constant presence at Trump's side before pulling back to focus on his Space X and Tesla businesses — also complained that DOGE had become a "whipping boy" for dissatisfaction with the administration. "I was disappointed to see the massive spending bill, frankly, which increases the budget deficit, not just decreases it, and undermines the work that the DOGE team is doing," Musk said in an interview with CBS News, an excerpt of which aired late Tuesday. Trump's "One Big, Beautiful Bill Act" — which passed the US House last week and now moves to the Senate — offers sprawling tax relief and spending cuts and is the centrepiece of his domestic agenda. But critics warn it will decimate health care and balloon the national deficit by as much as $4 trillion over a decade. "A bill can be big, or it can be beautiful. But I don't know if it can be both. My personal opinion," Musk said in the interview, which will be aired in full on Sunday. The White House sought to play down any differences over US government spending, without directly naming Musk. "The Big Beautiful Bill is NOT an annual budget bill," Trump's Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller said on Musk's social network, X, after the tech titan's comments aired. All DOGE cuts would have to be carried out through a separate bill targeting the federal bureaucracy, according to US Senate rules, Miller added. But Musk's comments represented a rare split with the Republican president whom he helped propel back to power, as the largest donor to his 2024 election campaign. 'Whipping boy' Trump tasked Musk with cutting government spending as head of DOGE, but after a feverish start Musk announced in late April he was mostly stepping back to run his companies again. Musk complained in a separate interview with the Washington Post that DOGE, which operated out of the White House with a staff of young technicians, had become a lightning rod for criticism. "DOGE is just becoming the whipping boy for everything," Musk told the newspaper at the Starbase launch site in Texas ahead of Space X's latest launch on Tuesday. "Something bad would happen anywhere, and we would get blamed for it even if we had nothing to do with it." Musk blamed entrenched US bureaucracy for DOGE's failure to achieve all of its goals — although reports say his domineering style and lack of familiarity with the currents of Washington politics were also major factors. "The federal bureaucracy situation is much worse than I realized," he said. "I thought there were problems, but it sure is an uphill battle trying to improve things in DC, to say the least." Musk has previously admitted that he did not achieve all his goals with DOGE even though tens of thousands of people were removed from government payrolls and several departments were gutted or shut down. Musk's own businesses suffered in the meantime. Protesters against the cost-cutting targeted Tesla dealerships while arsonists even torched a few of the electric vehicles, and the firm's profits slumped. "People were burning Teslas. Why would you do that? That's really uncool," Musk told the Post. Musk has also been focusing on Space X after a series of fiery setbacks to his dreams of colonizing Mars -- the latest of which came on Tuesday when its prototype Starship exploded over the Indian Ocean. The tycoon last week also said he would pull back from spending his fortune on politics, having spent around a quarter of a billion dollars to support Trump.

Expectations vs. reality in trading: Octa broker's perspective

KUALA LUMPUR, MALAYSIA - Media OutReach Newswire - 29 May 2025 - In trading, success greatly depends on the ability to take a step back from a situation and assess it without bias. This becomes much easier when understanding of financial markets is not clouded by overly optimistic or unrealistic expectations carried into each trading session. Octa, a globally regulated broker since 2011, breaks down some expectations traders build up when starting trading and explains why these starting points are better left behind. Expectation #1: All brokers offer transparent conditions Depending on their experience with various financial services, some traders may naturally assume that what they see in a broker's ad is precisely what they will get when engaging with this broker. Reality: Unfortunately, not every broker diligently applies the fees and conditions specified in their marketing communications. What's more, in some cases, a new trader may encounter hidden costs that were not specified in the broker's terms and conditions. In the same vein, other opaque brokers' practices, like introducing additional costs in case of market turmoil, may transpire over time. To ensure a broker is trustworthy, it is important to review independent online feedback before making an initial deposit. Octa also recommends starting with a modest sum and ensuring the spreads and fees are what is expected. Another factor that significantly contributes to a broker's reliability is extensive market experience and global reach. For example, Octa uses its successful track record of more than 14 years across multiple regions to ensure fast order execution, secure data processing, and better quotes for traders. Expectation #2: All brokers provide instant withdrawals When starting to engage with a financial broker, an emerging trader may assume that withdrawing their gains is always as fast and easy as making a minor cash transaction during regular business hours. Reality: Withdrawal time depends on the broker, varying from several minutes to several weeks. Octa's surveys show that up to 50% of traders have experienced serious issues with cash withdrawals, such as being unable to make the transaction through a preferred payment channel or facing unexpected fees. As a globally regulated and trusted broker, Octa recommends carefully reading online reviews first to verify that the vast majority of a broker's clients are happy with their withdrawals. Testing a broker's withdrawal process before depositing a larger amount can help confirm that the broker adheres strictly to its stated terms and conditions without introducing hidden costs. On its part, Octa draws from its experience in engaging with various payment systems worldwide to provide an efficient, fast, and reliable withdrawal mechanism. Expectation #3: 90% of success is finding a good strategy When forming their perception of financial markets, many traders rely way too heavily on social media and advertising content. For example, internet gurus often promote 'winning' strategies that are supposed to pretty much guarantee consistent profits. Reality: Any strategy, no matter how time-relevant and sophisticated, requires customisation and backtesting. Financial markets are constantly changing—albeit according to certain historical patterns—and seasoned traders are always looking for news and insights. This way, they can timely fine-tune their strategy and take advantage of major market fluctuations. To sum up, every strategy needs to be adjusted to specific market conditions, timeframes, and instruments. Mindlessly copying strategies is a recipe for failure. The most significant mismatch between expectation and reality in trading is underestimating some less-than-obvious nuances that must be taken into account to maximise potential. Customising a trading strategy to suit specific market conditions and selecting a reliable broker with fair and transparent terms represents a decisive step toward achieving more consistent results. ___ Disclaimer: This content is for general informational purposes only and does not constitute investment advice, a recommendation, or an offer to engage in any investment activity. Gold prices in UAE: Is Dh400 per gram the new normal?

For UAE residents considering gold for long-term investment or savings, now may be the right time to act. According to analysts and industry insiders, the precious metal is expected to remain above Dh400 per gram in the medium to long term. This marks a significant shift in market dynamics. In April, 24-carat gold crossed the Dh400-per-gram threshold for the first time in Dubai. This surge was driven by a mix of global uncertainties, including former US President Donald Trump's tariff policies, geopolitical tensions, falling interest rates, and strong demand from central banks. As of Wednesday evening, 24-carat gold was trading at Dh400.25 per gram, while 22-carat gold was priced at Dh370.75. On the global stage, spot gold hovered around $3,306 per ounce, a modest increase of 0.13 per cent. 'Volatility is likely to persist in the short term, primarily influenced by the pace and outcomes of ongoing trade negotiations,' said Vijay Valecha, Chief Investment Officer at Century Financial. 'Any major development — be it a breakthrough deal or new tariffs — could trigger sharp market reactions.' Valecha noted that although short-term fluctuations are expected, gold prices are likely to remain above Dh400 per gram over the long term. 'Trump's unpredictable tariff strategies have contributed to global trade uncertainty, increasing demand for safe-haven assets like gold. Recently, he threatened a 25 per cent tariff on all iPhones manufactured outside the US and a 50 per cent levy on EU goods — though these were temporarily postponed as trade negotiations continue.' Even if new trade agreements are reached and tariffs are lowered, Valecha believes gold will maintain its appeal due to broader economic concerns. He forecasts that gold could rise to $3,700 by the end of the year and potentially reach $4,000 by mid-2026, up from the current $3,335 per ounce. 'America's widening trade deficit, the sharp increase in the US debt-to-GDP ratio from 35 per cent in 2007 to an expected 100 per cent by 2025, and the fiscal impact of Trump's tax cuts have all contributed to a global flight to safety,' he added. 'These factors strengthen gold's position as both a portfolio diversifier and stabiliser.' Valecha cautioned that while significant trade deals could cause a temporary dip in gold prices, the broader macroeconomic fundamentals support a continued rally. Aditya Singh, Head of International Jewellery Business at Titan Company, echoed these sentiments. 'Although today's elevated gold prices may seem unusual, they align with historical trends where prices rise during periods of economic uncertainty,' he said. He advised retail buyers not to panic but to monitor key global indicators such as interest rates, inflation, geopolitical tensions, and central bank reserves. 'Small, consistent purchases tend to yield strong returns over time. We encourage customers to view gold as a blend of emotional and financial value — whether for weddings, milestones, or as a store of wealth, informed decision-making is essential.' Ramesh Kalyanaraman, Executive Director at Kalyan Jewellers, emphasised the enduring value of jewellery as a long-term asset. 'While natural price fluctuations will occur, steady demand in culturally rich markets like the UAE reassures us that gold will continue to be a preferred choice,' he said.
