Aaron Liang (right) defeated top seed Jerome Aw to clinch his first Singapore national squash title.
SINGAPORE – The city of Ithaca, New York, may not be renowned for metalworks, but as far as national squash player Aaron Liang is concerned, it is where iron sharpens iron.
It was where the Singaporean attained a bachelor's degree from Cornell University and received an invaluable education on the squash courts.
Australia's former world No. 1 David Palmer was his coach, while India's former Asian junior champion Veer Chotrani and Malaysia's Sivasangari Subramaniam, the current women's world No. 8, were among his teammates.
The stint, which also saw Liang play in the inter-collegiate league, has evidently lifted his game.
After returning home upon graduating in May 2025, the 24-year-old won the men's open of the Aug 11-16 Marigold Singapore Squash Championships.
In the Aug 16 final, he clinched his maiden title with a comeback 7-11, 11-8, 12-10, 11-4 win over top seed Jerome Aw at the Kallang Squash Centre, where Au Yeong Wai Yhann clinched her eighth consecutive women's open title by beating Ong Zhe Sim 11-8, 11-4, 12-10 in the final.
'I can't believe this, I've finally done it,' said Liang, who dethroned seven-time national champion Samuel Kang 11-9, 14-12, 11-7 in the semi-finals on Aug 15.

'I feel like more than any other tournament, the national championship is something that I've always wanted to win, and I would say is probably one of the biggest goals in my life.
'And to finally have attained it, knowing that I very well might not have this run (again), was just a huge sense of relief and accomplishment… An item that I've ticked off my list.'
What made the triumph sweeter was that Liang had defeated Kang, 34, in an official tournament for the first time with his semi-final victory, after losing to the veteran in the 2021 and 2022 finals.
He missed the 2023 and 2024 editions as he was at Cornell, where he pursued a degree in hotel administration finance and financial management services.
It was third-time lucky for Aaron Liang, having fallen in the 2021 and 2022 final.

Crediting his breakthrough to the Cornell stint, Liang said: 'Training under David Palmer has definitely had a big impact in developing the discipline and mental fortitude to play the big points and matches well. I've felt my game improve and grow significantly under his guidance.'
National coach Gurshan Singh has also noticed Liang's commitment since returning from the US.
He said: 'When he got back here after his graduation, he'd been training full-time for the past three months.
'So I think all these things put together, he's come a long way. He's really progressed in his squash, being very disciplined, being very committed to training.'
Alex Wan, general manager of the Singapore Squash Rackets Association (SSRA), said Liang's win is 'significant', not just for him but also for everyone as Kang had been dominating the men's arena for a very long time.
He added: 'In terms of mental and psychological side, to know that Samuel is beatable, it's really a moment of realisation for everyone that nothing is impossible.
'I don't think it's the end of Samuel's era, we also have to give credit to our younger players. It's always good to see these players stepping up.'
Liang, a two-time SEA Games medallist, is eyeing another run at the regional multi-sport meet in Thailand in December, having made the Singapore National Olympic Council's provisional list.
Wan said that the SSRA is targeting at least a bronze in both the men's and women's singles and a gold from either of the other two categories – the men's and mixed jumbo doubles, which will be Under-21 events.
At the 2019 Games in the Philippines, the last time that squash featured at the meet, the Republic won two silver medals (women's team and mixed team) and three joint-bronzes (both singles and men's team). Both Kang and Liang were part of the men's and mixed teams then.
But Kang, who had also bagged gold medals in the jumbo doubles and men's team categories at the 2017 edition, has been left out this time around.
The investment professional had been out of action for nearly six months after undergoing surgery to remove a blood clot on his left leg at the start of the year.
But he hopes to be back for the 2027 and 2029 Games, adding: 'For me, representing Singapore is always a huge honour.
'I'm always keeping myself in shape and trying to get back to 100 per cent… I can still add value to the Singapore team.
'I'm always going to be ready, but I also understand that the association has its own priorities and plans for certain players.'

Pakistan tell Babar to improve strike rate for T20 comeback

Sign up now: Get ST's newsletters delivered to your inbox LAHORE, Pakistan - Former Pakistan captain Babar Azam has been told to improve his batting against spin and boost his overall strike rate to be considered for Twenty20 Internationals, coach Mike Hesson said. Babar is Pakistan's batting mainstay in other formats but has not played a T20 International since their tour of South Africa late last year. The 30-year-old could not find a place in the Pakistan squad for the Asia Cup next month as the team management showed faith in rising players such as Sahibzada Farhan. "There's no doubt Babar's been asked to improve in some areas around taking on spin and in terms of his strike rate," Hesson said of the top-order batter who has a modest strike rate of 129 in T20 Internationals. "Those are things he's working really hard on. But at the moment the players we have, have done exceptionally well. "Sahibzada Farhan has played six games and won three player-of-the-match awards." Babar should use the Big Bash League in Australia to improve his 20-overs batting and stage a comeback, Hesson said. Top stories Swipe. Select. Stay informed. Santos sack coach Xavier after humiliating 6-0 home defeat to Vasco

Sign up now: Get ST's newsletters delivered to your inbox Santos have dismissed coach Cleber Xavier, the Brazilian side said on Sunday, hours after suffering a humiliating 6-0 home defeat by Vasco da Gama, which left the storied club perilously close to the relegation zone in the Brasileirao. The 61-year-old Brazilian, who took charge in April after serving as an assistant manager at clubs such as Palmeiras and Flamengo, departs with Santos sitting in 15th place with 21 points from 19 matches. The bottom four teams in the 20-club league are relegated to Serie B at the end of the season. "Santos Futebol Clube announces the departure of coach Cleber Xavier. The club thanks the coach for his services and wishes him luck in his future career," Santos said in a statement posted on social media. Xavier's departure marks another turbulent chapter for Santos, who won promotion back to the Brazilian top flight last November after spending a year in Serie B following their first-ever relegation. Once synonymous with greatness during the golden era led by the late Brazilian icon Pele, Santos now face an uphill battle to maintain their top-flight status. Pele helped Santos dominate Brazilian football in the 1950s and 1960s, when the coastal city side claimed 10 state and six national league titles. Santos have since produced a host of elite talent such as Neymar, former AC Milan forward Robinho and Real Madrid winger Rodrygo. Neymar, who returned to Santos in January after a stint with Saudi Arabian side Al-Hilal, signed a six-month contract extension in June. The 33-year-old former Barcelona and Paris St Germain forward did not hold back in his criticism of the team's performance following their defeat to Vasco, who sit 16th in the Brasileirao. "You have to explain our attitude on the field. Which, to sum it all up, was terrible," Neymar told Brazilian media. "It's a shame to play like that wearing the Santos jersey. I think everyone today needs to lay their head on their pillow, go home, and think about what they want to do. "Because with today's attitude, if we have to do what we did today on the field, I don't think we even need to show up on Wednesday." Santos next visit fourth-placed Bahia on August 24. REUTERS

All Black lock Tuipulotu likely to miss second Pumas test

Sign up now: Get ST's newsletters delivered to your inbox All Blacks lock Patrick Tuipulotu looks likely to miss New Zealand's second Rugby Championship test against Argentina this weekend after being taken to hospital in the wake of the 41-24 win over the Pumas last weekend. Assistant coach Jason Ryan said the veteran second-row forward sustained a head knock after replacing skipper Scott Barrett in the 56th minute in Cordoba last Saturday. "Patty went off to hospital and had a couple of check-ups as well, which we are monitoring over the next 24 hours," Ryan told New Zealand media from South America. "Patty is potentially unlikely for this week." Ryan said Barrett had been withdrawn from the contest to manage his return from an Achilles injury and would be fit for Saturday's clash in Buenos Aires. Fabian Holland, who started alongside Barrett in the second row, has also been given a clean bill of health despite being taken off with cramp late in the Cordoba clash. Number eight Wallace Sititi and loosehead prop Tamaiti Williams could be available for Saturday's match after missing New Zealand's tournament-opener as they continue to recover from ankle and knee operations respectively, Ryan said. That's healthy," Ryan added. The hardfought victory over Argentina combined with Australia's stunning upset of world champions South Africa will send the All Blacks back to the top of the world rankings for the first time since 2021 later on Monday. The Springboks will drop from the top spot they have occupied for most of the last five years to third behind Ireland. The Wallabies will remain in sixth behind France and England. "It just shows you how tough test footy is, how close it is, and the margins," head coach Scott Robertson said in post-match news conference in Cordoba. "We're pleased we're number one, but our sights will probably be more set on next week's match than rankings." REUTERS
