Educators learn to use AI tools at Niswonger School Success Symposium

Yahoo14 hours ago

KINGSPORT, Tenn. (WJHL) – At this year's Niswonger Foundation School Success Symposium, teachers from around East Tennessee gathered to learn more about changing technology in the classroom, including the uses of AI.
Niswonger Foundation CEO Steve Barnett said the topic of the symposium was chosen by the teachers attending. This year, Barnett said teachers decided to learn about how AI tools can be used in the classroom.
'It's emerging and it's going to continue to change over time,' Barnett said. 'And we want to make sure that it's something that teachers feel comfortable with because they see your students use it, teachers can use it and we want to make sure everybody has what they need to be able to be successful with our use of AI in the classroom.'
2024 National Teacher of the Year Missy Testerman spoke to over 600 teachers about how even though AI will change things, human connection with students will always be needed. Testerman said, for example, AI tools will not help students who may be nervous about a test.
'It is something that we're going to have to embrace because we want our students to be prepared for the future,' Testerman said. 'We just have to figure out a way to take in all the advantages that we can of ed tech while we maintain that spirit of humanity.'

Beth Zeisenis, also known as 'Beth Z, Your Nerdy Best Friend,' was this year's keynote speaker for the symposium.
'Teachers have such a tough time right now with the whole concept of AI and so what I tried to do was give them some tools that they can use right away, plus some bigger concepts about how it works and where it's going,' Zeisenis said.
Zeisenis went through many AI programs including Chat GPT and Magic School Plus. She said teachers can use AI tools to complete small tasks such as making lesson plans.
Zeisenis also said teachers need to have conversations with students about how to properly use AI instead of trying to stop students from using it altogether.
'We need to go into conversations with our students about trusting each other and about learning this together, because if we go in with a defensive posture, if we go in distrusting each other, then you have a challenge because it's there all the time,' Zeisenis SAID.
'It's going to be like calculators in our pockets. They're going to have it for the rest of their lives. So how can we teach students and each other how we can use that rather than being afraid of it or feeling like it's an affront to what's going on?'
Zeisenis and Testerman both encourage East Tennessee teachers to talk to school administrators about the ways AI can be used in the classroom.

While shareholders of Cloudflare (NYSE:NET) are in the black over 5 years, those who bought a week ago aren't so fortunate

For many, the main point of investing in the stock market is to achieve spectacular returns. While not every stock performs well, when investors win, they can win big. Don't believe it? Then look at the Cloudflare, Inc. (NYSE:NET) share price. It's 378% higher than it was five years ago. This just goes to show the value creation that some businesses can achieve. Also pleasing for shareholders was the 48% gain in the last three months. While the stock has fallen 4.3% this week, it's worth focusing on the longer term and seeing if the stocks historical returns have been driven by the underlying fundamentals. AI is about to change healthcare. These 20 stocks are working on everything from early diagnostics to drug discovery. The best part - they are all under $10bn in marketcap - there is still time to get in early. Cloudflare wasn't profitable in the last twelve months, it is unlikely we'll see a strong correlation between its share price and its earnings per share (EPS). Arguably revenue is our next best option. Shareholders of unprofitable companies usually desire strong revenue growth. That's because fast revenue growth can be easily extrapolated to forecast profits, often of considerable size. For the last half decade, Cloudflare can boast revenue growth at a rate of 32% per year. That's well above most pre-profit companies. Arguably, this is well and truly reflected in the strong share price gain of 37%(per year) over the same period. Despite the strong run, top performers like Cloudflare have been known to go on winning for decades. On the face of it, this looks lke a good opportunity, although we note sentiment seems very positive already. You can see how earnings and revenue have changed over time in the image below (click on the chart to see the exact values). It's probably worth noting that the CEO is paid less than the median at similar sized companies. But while CEO remuneration is always worth checking, the really important question is whether the company can grow earnings going forward. So we recommend checking out this free report showing consensus forecasts It's good to see that Cloudflare has rewarded shareholders with a total shareholder return of 128% in the last twelve months. That gain is better than the annual TSR over five years, which is 37%. Therefore it seems like sentiment around the company has been positive lately. Someone with an optimistic perspective could view the recent improvement in TSR as indicating that the business itself is getting better with time. These New Pixel 10 Features Will Challenge The Competition

The new Pixel 9 With the launch of Android 16, many expect the first smartphones to ship with the latest version of the OS will be Google's Pixel 10 and Pixel 10 Pro. While the focus will no doubt be placed on both the new capabilities of Android and the increased application of artificial intelligence, some huge hardware changes should not go unnoticed. The changes focus on the camera. It's already clear that Google is adding a telephoto lens to the Pixel 10; the Pixel 9's wide-angle and ultrawide-angle lens will be joined by a telephoto lens. This isn't a direct addition… the Pixel 9's with the 50 megapixel wide and 48 megapixel ultrawide will be bumped down to a 48 megapixel wide and 13 megapixel ultrawide pairing (a pairing that matches that of the Pixel 9a). Nevertheless, the telephoto will be welcome both in use and by the marketing team. The camera system is expected to feature gimbal-like stabilization across the entire Pixel 10 family. Using a mix of optical image stabilization, software-based electronic image stabilization, and AI algorithms, the Pixel 10 camera system should allow for sharper images thanks to the steadying influence of the hardware compensating for dynamic movement while the phone's camera is being used. The Pixel 10 has a critical role to play in the smartphone ecosystem. As the entry-level Pixel smartphone, it will challenge the current 'flagship-killer' handsets in price and capability. With it, Google will be looking to set the standard that consumers should expect at this price point. While the Pixel range plays a part in defining what it means to be a smartphone—be it a flagship, a foldable, or the base function of a phone—the Pixel 10 will arguably be the Pixel that can have the most significant impact on the ecosystem. Adding a telephoto lens and image stabilisation sets another marker for the competition. Whether it is a justification for a decision already made in their design process, or a push to include these elements in the next phone, the Pixel 10 represents Google's image of what a smartphone should be. And that view now includes some big steps forward for the camera. Now read the lates Pixel 10 and Android headlines in Forbes' weekly smartphone digest...

Meta In Talks To Invest Over $10B In Scale AI — Possibly The Biggest Private AI Deal This Year

Meta (NASDAQ:META) is reportedly preparing to invest more than $10 billion in Scale AI, a startup providing high-quality labeled data to companies building next-generation AI models, including OpenAI and Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT). If finalized, the deal would rank among the largest private funding rounds in tech history, Bloomberg reports. San Francisco-based, Scale AI plays a pivotal role in the artificial intelligence supply chain by powering data pipelines used to train large language models like ChatGPT and Meta's Llama. According to Investor's Business Daily, Meta's potential investment builds on its prior participation in Scale's $1 billion Series F round in 2024, which valued the firm at $18 billion. Scale AI provides structured and labeled data by deploying a global network of contractors, including experts with PhDs and graduate degrees in medicine, law, and molecular biology. The firm's high-level contributors create test scenarios and reinforce learning strategies for AI systems, ensuring that models produce accurate and context-aware responses, especially in industries such as healthcare and tax law. According to Bloomberg, as of this year, 12% of Scale's contributors involved in improving AI models held PhDs in fields such as molecular biology, while more than 40% had a master's degree, law degree, or MBA in their area of expertise. Trending: Maximize saving for your retirement and cut down on taxes: Scale AI expects to generate $2 billion in revenue this year, more than doubling the $870 million earned last year, Bloomberg reports. This surge reflects the broader industry's increasing need for tailored datasets as synthetic training data begins to reach its performance limits. Meta's relationship with Scale also serves the purpose of regulatory alignment. Scale CEO Alexandr Wang has become a regular presence in Washington, advising lawmakers on AI regulation and calling for a 'national AI data reserve.' Bloomberg reports that lawmakers on Capitol Hill have welcomed his insights, viewing Scale as a bridge between Silicon Valley innovation and federal oversight. Investor's Business Daily says that Scale has also expanded its role in defense AI by contributing to projects such as Meta's Defense Llama model, designed for U.S. national security applications. This aligns Meta more closely with the U.S. government, following similar partnerships between Microsoft and its success, Scale has faced criticism for labor practices involving overseas contractors in countries like Kenya and the Philippines, where some workers were paid relatively little and reported psychological distress from reviewing harmful online content, Bloomberg reports. According to TechCrunch, the U.S. Department of Labor has since closed its investigation into the company's compliance with wage regulations, but ongoing scrutiny remains a reputational concern. According to Bloomberg, insiders say discussions between Meta and Scale are ongoing and could still shift. Regardless of a final number, Meta's expected commitment may redefine the race for control of the AI data layer, strengthening Scale AI's position at the heart of artificial intelligence's next chapter.
