Canada's Xanadu achieves worldwide first with error-resistant quantum chip

Toronto startup Xanadu Quantum Technologies Inc. is reporting a new milestone in the effort to develop a form of light-based quantum computing that can operate at commercial scale.
For the first time anywhere, Xanadu researchers have created a single chip that embodies a powerful type of error-detection code in a pulse of laser light.
If a number of such chips could be harnessed together, it would open the door to a quantum computer that can deliver reliable results with practical value.
'This is something that's been on our roadmap for a long time,' Zachary Vernon, Xanadu's chief technology officer for hardware, told The Globe and Mail.
A technical description of the chip was published Wednesday in the journal Nature.
The development is significant 'because the chip platform is supposed to be scalable,' said Daniel Soh, an associate professor of optical science at the University of Arizona in Tucson.
'In the future, we will need millions or billions of this kind of devices on a chip. This result is a massive step towards that goal,' said Dr. Soh, who is not affiliated with Xanadu.

Christian Weedbrook, Xanadu's founder and chief executive officer, said the development means it is possible to envision a quantum-computing system operating at the scale of a data centre, with some 5,000 servers fitting into a facility less than 10,000 square metres in size.
'We're also thinking ahead to how we can add more density in there, so that'll change,' he said.
Earlier this year Xanadu published a result showing how its form of quantum computing could be easily modularized. This latest step is aimed at making a machine large enough to solve relevant problems but not so large that it becomes impractical for commercial purposes.
It is the latest example of a shift in the focus and tempo of advancements in the quantum computing world.
Overall, the goal remains to create a computer that runs on qubits – interconnected physical elements that exhibit quantum behaviour – instead of the standard bits of a conventional digital system.
Where a bit can be used to represent a one or a zero in a mathematical calculation, a qubit can be a mixture of both. This dual nature, when combined with many other qubits, is what allows a quantum computer, in principle, to vastly outperform a conventional computer at certain kinds of calculations that are important for data security and other applications.
While various companies, including Google, IBM and Microsoft, have experimented with different types of qubits, all of them face the same challenge: Quantum systems are sensitive to disturbance and difficult to isolate from the rest of the world, which makes quantum computers especially error-prone.
To counter this, qubits can be linked to check each other for signs of failure during a calculation. But the price for such redundancy is that many more qubits are needed to build a reliable computer powerful enough to solve real-world problems.
More recently, teams have sought to exploit various mathematical codes, which are ways of tying qubits together, to make error correction more robust.
Of particular interest are Gottesman-Kitaev-Preskill (GKP) codes. First proposed in 2001, they are challenging to implement but especially amenable for quantum computer builders such as Xanadu, whose machines use qubits made of light moving through a fibre-optic network.
Xanadu's new chip corrals incoming particles of light, called photons, into a quantum state that allows them to work together to form a GKP qubit. The chip has four outputs, three of which are connected to detectors that can reveal whether the fourth is in a state that would allow it to be useful for a quantum calculation.
In a working quantum computer, such chips would provide an initial layer of error detection that would then be further augmented by other error-correction techniques when chips are combined.
Similar strategies are being explored by other companies. Last week, Nord Quantique, based in Sherbrooke, Que., demonstrated that it had successfully encoded microwave photons bouncing around inside a metal cavity with a GKP code.
Meanwhile, Xanadu still has more obstacles to overcome. Chief among them is finding ways to overcome signal loss, which occurs when photons are absorbed by the materials they are moving through.
In addition to making its light-based technology work, Xanadu and direct competitors such as PsiQuantum, Corp. of Palo Alto, Calif., are racing against big tech companies developing computers with qubits that rely on special superconducting materials kept at extremely cold temperatures.
Light-based systems offer a different set of advantages, including the fact that they can operate at room temperature.
While no system has yet emerged as a clear winner, Dr. Soh says light-based quantum computers may end up inching ahead because once the key technical challenges are solved, they will be easier to scale up.

Hundreds of workers in other federal organizations — like the Canada Revenue Agency, Employment and Social Development Canada and Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada — also have been laid off recently. Prime Minister Mark Carney has vowed to cap, not cut, the federal public service. Coal mines on Alberta's eastern slopes could push fishery ‘beyond recovery': study

(THE CANADIAN PRESS/Jeff McIntosh) Old coal mines on the eastern slopes of the Alberta Rockies are leaching chemicals that are poisoning the fish downstream, says a new study by Alberta government scientists. It also suggests any new coal developments could result in 'population collapse' of fish species in a nearby lake. The findings were made in a provincial government study posted online May 27. The paper is awaiting peer review. The scientists who authored it were not made available to speak to reporters. The other authors not employed by the province did not respond to requests for comment. Alberta has responded to the study with an advisory saying people should consider 'limiting consumption' of three fish species drawn from Crowsnest Lake, a fishing spot downstream from the coal mines. Those species were found to have dangerously high levels of selenium, a mineral found in coal-rich deposits, in their body tissue. The authors write the study shows that 'biological impacts of (mountaintop removal) coal mining can persist long after mining operations end.' They suggest that 'any further coal mine development may well push the Crowsnest fishery beyond sustainability.' The study comes after the Alberta Energy Regulator, or AER, granted an Australia-based coal company permission to start a controversial coal exploration on the eastern slopes. The project was initially rejected in 2021 when a panel ruled the likely environmental effects on fish and water quality outweighed potential economic benefits. But the regulator said last month it's possible there will be runoff from the nearby pit lake that Northback Holding Corp. is using. It ultimately concluded the project won't have any effect on the water quality downstream. The AER said that 'out of an abundance of caution,' Northback will have to comply with a directive for managing drilling waste in response to concerns over selenium. The new study measured selenium levels in fish from Crowsnest Lake, which is fed by creeks connected to Tent Mountain and Grassy Mountain – both former coal mine sites. Alberta has a fish tissue selenium guideline of four micrograms per gram. The authors write that every single fish sample analyzed exceeded this value. Average selenium concentrations were highest in Brown Trout, coming in at 18 micrograms per gram. The authors write that the selenium levels could lead to 'behavioural changes, physical symptoms ... respiratory issues, reproductive issues and ultimately population collapse.' Accumulating fluid in body tissue or fin and tail damage are among other side effects. Most people are exposed to healthy levels of selenium through grains and flours, but Health Canada says elevated consumption can lead to hair loss, decreased cognitive function and gastrointestinal disorders. The high selenium concentrations can only be explained by 'the incorporation of legacy coal mine pollution,' the authors write. The study goes on to say selenium levels in fish in Crowsnest Lake are similar to those found in water bodies near Fernie, B.C., that resulted in Teck Mining Company, which owned and operated a nearby mine, being forced in 2021 by B.C. provincial court to pay a $60 million fine – the largest fine ever imposed under the Fisheries Act. Fish populations in those mining-impacted streams were found in 2011 to have an average selenium concentration of 7.6 micrograms per gram. Nine years later, the adult westslope cutthroat population had suffered a 93 per cent decline, the study says. The authors conclude that factors including the emergence of Whirling Disease, drought conditions, high fishing activity -- and now high selenium levels in fish -- make the Crowsnest Lake and River 'an especially vulnerable system.' 'Any new development of coal mining along the eastern slopes may well push the Crowsnest fishery beyond recovery,' they write. Colin Cooke, one of the authors, published a 2024 study that found a former coal mine in the Crowsnest River watershed was releasing selenium to fish at rates more than dozens of times higher than federal and provincial guidelines. Cooke is a senior aquatic scientist with the Alberta government, according to LinkedIn. Peter Doyle, CEO of Evolve Power Ltd., formerly Montem Resources Ltd., which previously sought to restart an old mine on Tent Mountain, said in an email that the company is complying with terms set out by the AER. 'As reflected in other work by the author, there are numerous contributors to water quality in the Crowsnest River valley, not related to Tent Mountain, including changes in upstream conditions, changes in weathering rates and other anthropogenic changes in the watershed,' Doyle wrote, referring to Cooke's 2024 study. That report notes those factors, among others, could be contributing to contaminant levels and concluded that coal mining activities in the Crowsnest River watershed 'have been impacting ecosystems downstream for decades.' Northback, in an email, wrote that Crowsnest Lake is unrelated to its Grassy Mountain project. 'However, with our own project, Northback is committed to adhering to the highest environmental standards and ensuring a safe water supply.' Ryan Fournier, press secretary for Alberta's environment ministry, deferred questions about monitoring and enforcement to the AER. He said the province is funding a series of studies and submitting them to peer-reviewed academic journals as the province revises its coal policy. He also said the authors were not available to speak to media because they 'are not trained spokespeople.' The AER told The Canadian Press that it has directed Evolve Power, the Tent Mountain owner, to submit a 'selenium management plan proposal' that targets reductions in selenium in mine-affected water. Evolve was to submit that plan by July 31 of last year, but the AER said it granted the company an extension to March 31, 2026. The energy regulator also said that while selenium levels are elevated, 'there is no evidence of non-compliance on monitoring or selenium management requirements at this time.' The province announced in December it would allow coal mining to take place in Alberta under certain conditions. However, it exempted Northback and Evolve Power's projects from those rules because they were considered 'advanced.' Fisheries and Oceans Canada said in a statement that it doesn't comment on provincial permitting decisions and it hasn't been asked to review the local impacts to wildlife in the area. ‘Unsafe': Popeyes accused of using supplier that stored chicken in residential garages

A lawsuit alleges Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen of purchasing meat unsafe for human consumption, that was stored and packaged in residential garages. A lawsuit filed against Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen is accusing the fried chicken chain of buying 'unsafe' meat from an unauthorized seller that was allegedly storing and packaging raw chicken in residential garages in Ontario. The lawsuit was filed at the Ontario Superior Court of Justice on May 26 by ADP, a former raw chicken supplier to Popeyes. The company alleges they lost their contract with Popeyes after bringing forward its concerns about the 'unsafe supply' of products. Popeyes, Restaurant Brands International (RBI)—the Toronto-based company that owns the fast-food chain—and Restaurant Services Canada Inc. (RSCI), the supply chain manager, are all named in the lawsuit. Popeyes, for its part, said in a statement to CTV News that the claims from ADP Direct Poultry Ltd. are unfounded and that it found 'no evidence' to support them following an investigation. The lawsuit also names another company as the unauthorized supplier that allegedly provided, at times, 'rotten or expired' chicken deemed 'unfit for human consumption' to various franchisees across Ontario. The documents continue to say this chicken created a public health risk because it was delivered in vehicles that did not have the proper refrigeration to prevent it from spoiling. The statement of claim alleges that these tainted products were bought by various franchisees—both known to ADP and not, all named in the suit—due to their lower prices. The lawsuit also alleges the franchisees continued to sell the chicken to customers, even after ADP brought forward its concerns that the products did not adhere to food health and safety standards. The allegations have not been tested in court. As laid out in the documents, Popeyes had a system of authorized suppliers and distributors who adhered to the company's specifications and standards, meaning franchisees were required to purchase from within their approved list of vendors. Any restaurant looking to purchase ingredients outside of the company's list of vendors had to write a formal request, after which the supplier in question would have to submit to an inspection to ensure it meets the requirements as well as health and safety standards. ADP claims the chicken sold by the unauthorized company was not inspected by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) or any other inspector. CTV News Toronto contacted the CFIA for comment. The supplier claims RSCI, meanwhile, did not investigate the unsafe supply of chicken as they promised and instead conspired to 'manufacture a rationale for removing ADP' from their authorized vendors list. In turn, the filings further allege franchisees were 'upset about the reporting of the unsafe supply' and worked with the RSCI to lodge 'false or misleading' complaints about the quality of their products. CTV News has reached out to Restaurant Services Inc., parent company to RSCI, for comment but has not yet heard back. 'We believe this former supplier is lashing out after losing our business for a variety of legitimate reasons,' Emily Ciantra, Popeye's director communications, told CTV News Toronto in a statement. 'We have always been committed to rigorous safety standards, including regular inspections by third party auditors who verify our strict standards are being followed.' ADP seeks $35 million in damages from Popeyes, RBI and RSCI, citing breach of contract and breaches of the Competition Act. The documents state that $30 million is to cover ADP's loss of profits after their contract—which was expected to continue until 2027—was prematurely terminated. An additional $5 million is to cover the costs the supplier incurred after boosting its production facilities to meet Popeyes' increased production demand, the documents state. ADP also seeks $1 million in punitive damages. The supplier adds it also lost out on business opportunities, such as providing products to other fast-food chains like Wendy's. Additionally, the raw chicken supplier is seeking at least $10 million in damages from the unauthorized company, who it deems liable for 'unlawfully interfering' with ADP's economic relationship with Popeyes, as well as $500,000 in aggravated damages. ADP also seeks $150,000 from each franchisee and an account detailing the quantity of 'unsafe supply' they bought from the company as well as how much they profited from the unauthorized products. 'The defendants' conduct was malicious, high handed, intended to cause harm to ADP, endangered the public, and warrants aggravated and punitive damages,' the filings state.
