Action Society angered by internal inquiry clearing VIP cops
Civil rights watchdog Action Society wants a review of the police's internal accountability processes after eight VIP protection unit officers were cleared of wrongdoing in a disciplinary hearing concluded earlier this week.
The officers, filmed in an altercation with civilians on the N1 highway in July 2023, were members of Deputy President Paul Mashatile's protection detail.
Ulrich Roux, legal representative for three of the civilians, told CapeTalk his clients are disappointed with the outcome but have not been deterred from pursuing criminal and civil charges.
'The onus of proof is completely different in a criminal matter as well as in civil litigation in the high court,' he said.
Lesiba Thobakgale, spokesperson for the SA Police Union which represented the officers in the internal process, told radio presenter Lester Kiewit they were subjected to the correct disciplinary process, and the chairperson acquitted them after hearing all the information. He said it would be unfair for public pressure to determine the outcome of internal processes.

Woman is held for ‘beating toddler with a bottle'
A Nelson Mandela Bay woman has been arrested for allegedly assaulting her three-year-old child with a bottle. Police spokesperson Captain Sandra Janse van Rensburg said Motherwell police attended to a complaint in the Shukushukuma area at about 6.30pm on Thursday. 'On arrival they were informed by a witness that while passing a house, he noticed the female suspect assaulting her three-year-old son with an empty bottle,' Janse van Rensburg said. 'The witness entered the house to intervene and managed to stop the woman and alerted the police. 'The boy was taken to hospital by family and had visible injuries to his head and face. 'The female suspect was arrested on charges of attempted murder and child abuse.' Janse van Rensburg said the 35-year-old woman would appear in the Motherwell magistrate's court on Monday. GNU ministers spent R200m of taxpayers' money on travelling since taking office
Ministers in the government of national unity (GNU) have spent more than R200m on travel expenses since July last year. This was revealed by ActionSA through its GNU performance tracker after receiving replies to parliamentary questions sent to ministers. This week, the party said Deputy President Paul Mashatile and his staff splurged more than R2m on travel expenses for transport and accommodation since last year. In a written reply, Mashatile said he has been on four international trips - to Ireland, Botswana, Zimbabwe and, recently, Japan. A total of R613,214 was spent on flights, R1,235,569 on accommodation and R410,926 for ground transport for all trips. Other costs included laundry services at R8,033 and R51,393 for restaurant services. ActionSA MP Alan Beesley criticised the spending, calling it 'executive indulgence' and 'wasteful expenditure'. 'This sort of wasteful expenditure, an extension of ANC excess now rebranded under the GNU, has become business as usual for the world's most bloated executive,' Beesley said. 'South Africans deserve leadership that puts people before perks and not a R200m travel spree by the world's largest cabinet.' The sport, arts and culture department's travel expenses have also raised concern. Minister Gayton McKenzie said he and his staff undertook 11 international trips costing more than R2m. R164,556 was paid for a trip to Burkina Faso that never took place. 'Not only is this spending exorbitant, but it is riddled with red flags, gaps and inconsistencies. The public paid for flights and accommodation for an event that was abandoned, a textbook case of wasteful expenditure, as defined by the Public Finance Management Act. 'Unless the minister can demonstrate that this loss was unavoidable and efforts were made to recover the funds, this reflects a serious failure of financial oversight and internal control.' ActionSA has introduced the Enhanced Cut Cabinet Perks Bill to address unchecked government spending. 'This bill seeks to slash ministerial perks and restore much-needed fiscal discipline.'

Men implicated in North End Lake horror denied bail
The state successfully opposed bail for five men accused of a series of violent crimes committed in Gqeberha in October 2024. The charges include robbery with aggravating circumstances, murder, attempted murder, kidnapping, and rape. The accused — aged between 18 and 35 — were arrested between October and December 2024. The charges stem from a brutal incident near North End Lake, in Milner Avenue, on Saturday October 12, during which a man was fatally stabbed, another severely injured, and two women were kidnapped and sexually assaulted. District court prosecutor Asavela Dweba strongly opposed the five accused's bail applications, citing the severity and violent nature of the crimes, that they were believed to be a flight risk, the danger posed to the community, and the trauma endured by the surviving victims. She also warned of the potential for witness intimidation and interference with the investigation. The court ruled in favour of the state, stating that the accused had failed to provide compelling personal circumstances to justify their release. It also acknowledged the strength of the case against them. Some of the accused also had various previous convictions or pending cases. The case was postponed to August 14 for further investigation.
