McInnes: ‘there is still more to come'
Three of the goals came inside the first 38 minutes, and the club's head coach told Hearts TV that coming away from home in a cup competition can be difficult.
Stirling Albion, he admitted, surprised the Tynecastle coaching team, coming in with a back four, something with McInnes said they have never done. Albion, he argued, are normally a back five, but the tactical move, he admitted, helped the visitors.
He said: 'It was a bit more straight forward in terms of two wingers, two strikers. We got a lot right in the first half, especially in the early periods. They made a wee change before half time and came out second half, bolstered the middle of the pitch, with a 5-3-1-1, and it meant us going round the houses a bit more. We needed to be a little sharper. We wanted to show that penetration.
'We won 4-0, that's 12 goals and one conceded (in the Premier Sports Cup), goalkeeper Zander Clark has not made a save and we would have taken that before the game but, equally, I still think there is more to come.'
McInnes said: 'We got one goal second half but we should really be showing a lot more authority in terms of creating chances. Not completely happy but happy with the approach of the team.'
There were, he said, good combinations, some involving Alan Forrest, Harry Milne and Alexandros Kyziridis, and some good striking movements between Lawrence Shankland and Claudio Braga. They were well supported.
Demanding McInnes said: 'You need to be aggressive in the first contact and look after the first pass, so there was a lot of that, but I was still looking for a bit more even within that first half in terms of the types of crosses we put in, when to cross and decision making at times.
'I am also conscious that pre-season, these games are to sharpen up your work but, because the focus is on you to win games competitively, it is not always straight forward. We got the job done and we are back in training on Sunday.
'Get some training into the lads, see them assessed in terms of injuries.'
Beni Baningime was a noteable absentee at Forthbank because of a strain from training on Friday. He was not expected to train on Sunday but, hopefully, he will be ready to play some part in the game against Dumbarton at Tynecastle on Wednesday (kick-off 19.45) in the same competition.
The ex-Aberdeen and Kilmarnock boss added that good habits, winning games, clean sheets are what his is looking for but he stressed: 'Listen, we are a wee bit short of what I am looking for.'
McInnes also praised 2,000 fans for coming to Stirling in big numbers in the heavy rain and he said: 'I am finding out about the team, they want to find out about the team, and any time you make the effort to travel it is important to see the team win and get a wee flavour of what we could be.
'Bigger challenges ahead, of course, but we dealt with the challenge that was here today.'

Hearts head coach Derek McInnes admits his team's form is leaving him with a huge selection dilemma ahead of next week's Scottish Premiership opener against Aberdeen at Tynecastle. The Jambos have enjoyed a strong start to life under their new head coach, beating English Premier League side Sunderland 3-0 in Craig Gordon's testimonial at the weekend on the back of winning all four of their Premier Sports Cup group games. However, their focus will now switch to a difficult league opener against Scottish Cup winners Aberdeen on Monday. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Expected to be two of the sides vying for a European position this season, the early season clash is a chance for both teams to put down an early marker, with Hearts in particular hoping for a vast improvement on their seventh place finish in 2024/25. Cammy Devlin has been highly praised by Hearts' new head coach Derek McInnes for his pre-season performances at Tynecastle. | SNS Group The 54-year-old boss was mightily impressed with his players in Saturday's win over the Black Cats, but admits their impressive early form is making it difficult for him to pick his starting XI. Regardless of who does start though, McInnes is confident they can get the desired result. 'I think when everybody puts their best foot forward, and there's a lot of people putting their hands up to play, that's great for a manager,' said McInnes. 'Obviously, I can only pick XI. I think I could pick so many different XIs, and I'd feel confident we could compete and get results. 'So I've got an idea about how I want to play and some of the players within that, but we've still got nine days or so. Training's important. We've got a bounce game on Wednesday, a closed-door game, to try and top up the minutes for others.' Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad One player who looks almost certain to start the game is Australian midfielder Cammy Devlin, who was lavished with praise by the ex-Kilmarnock boss. 'I'm absolutely delighted with him,' beamed McInnes. 'He's been first class. Even from our first conversation with Cammy, when we were on holiday. I've always been an admirer from a distance. 'Now that I'm his manager, I'm really enjoying working with him. I think he gives you a bit of everything. I just want him to be at midfield. He doesn't need to overthink his game too much. The game will come naturally to Cammy if he keeps getting about his work. He's been different class.' Hearts' Oisin McEntee (R) may have played his way into Derek McInnes' starting XI. | SNS Group New signing Oisin McEntee also looks to have played himself into McInnes' thinking after a monstrous display in the weekend win in Gorgie. The versatile Irishman claimed his preferred position is in midfield, and the Hearts boss has hinted that fans may see him in that role more often than not this season.

Hearts gaffer McInnes 'has idea' of Hearts starting XI for Aberdeen as players put their hands up
The Jambos will host the Scottish Cup holders in their opening match of the 2025/26 Scottish Premiership season at Tynecastle. Sign up to our Hearts newsletter Sign up Thank you for signing up! Hearts head coach Derek McInnes has revealed he already has an idea of what his starting XI for their Scottish Premiership opener against Aberdeen will look like. The Jambos' gaffer has a welcome selection headache with such a large first team squad to choose from and so many players impressing during their undefeated Premier Sports Cup group stage and the 3-0 friendly win over Sunderland in Craig Gordon's testimonial. Attention no turns to the closing match of the opening weekend of league fixtures as the Scottish Cup holders travel to Tynecastle. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad McInnes has had a chance to look at almost every player in his squad, including all the new signings, at some point over the past few weeks. Given the impressive run of results, it has provided the former Kilmarnock gaffer with some tough choices to make. Hearts boss has idea of how team will line up for Scottish Premiership opener against Aberdeen He said: 'I think when everybody puts their best foot forward and there's a lot of people putting their hands up to play, and that's great for a manager, but obviously, they can only pick eleven. Sometimes I've been charged a team and you try to pick eleven and the best XI doesn't look great and you're not sure you can win that game. 'I think I could pick so many different XIs and I'd feel confident we could compete and get results. So I've got an idea about how I want to play and some of the players within that, but training's important. We've got a bounce game on Wednesday, a closed-door game, to try and top up the minutes for others.' McInnes praises new signing after impressive display in 3-0 win over Sunderland One of the newest signings who stood out in the 3-0 win over Sunderland was Oisin McEntee. The versatile Irishman played in midfield during the testimonial match and was easily the best player on the park on the day. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad 'He's a ball winner and keeps it simple,' said McInnes, after the match last Saturday. 'He's progressive, plays up and down the pitch. You've seen everything, why we wanted Oisin in the team today. 'We were a wee bit light in there, obviously with midfield and Calem getting injured and Benny still not quite there. We were a wee bit light in that sense, but McEntee needs to know. Because I said this to you, sometimes in the pre-season games, obviously we've tried them one or two different positions. 'Sometimes in the pre-season games, you don't always get a chance to go and snap into tackles and chance to turn the ball over and show that aggression. Because we've had most of the ball in that sense. So, today was a good game. 'And I said to you, there's seven, eight, nine games, opponents in our league that I can see Oisin really as effective as he was today.' Derek McInnes reveals long term admiration of Hearts star who 'gives a bit of everything'
The new Tynecastle boss sees a big role for the midfielder in his team this season Derek McInnes was a big fan of Cammy Devlin from afar – and has loved working with him at close quarters. The new Hearts manager sees a big role for the Australian midfielder in his team this season with Devlin having featured heavily in their pre-season and league cup and games. As part of McInnes' high press approach, Devlin's ball-winning ability in the middle of the park will be crucial as Hearts gear up for Aberdeen's Premiership visit of Aberdeen. And the Jambos gaffer is thrilled with what he has seen from the 27-year-old so far. McInnes said: 'I'm absolutely delighted with him, he's been first class - even from our first conversation with Cammy when we were on holiday. 'I've always been an admirer from a distance. And now that I'm his manager I'm really enjoying working with him. 'I think he gives you a bit of everything. 'I just want him to be a midfielder and he doesn't need to overthink his game too much. 'The game will come naturally to Cammy if he keeps getting about his work and he's been different class.' New recruit Oisin McEntee is similar to Devlin but also offers an aerial presence and McInnes is just as delighted with how the Irishman has settled into his new surroundings following his switch from Walsall. McEntee gave fans a taste of what is to come with an all-action display in the weekend's impressive 3-0 friendly win over Premier League newcomers Sunderland. McInnes added: 'He's a ball winner and keeps it simple, he's progressive - plays up and down the pitch. 'You've seen everything and why we wanted Oisin in the team against Sunderland. 'We've tried him in one or two different positions and sometimes in the pre-season games you don't always get a chance to go and snap into tackles and chance to turn the ball over and show that aggression. 'We've had most of the ball in that sense so Saturday was a good game. "There's seven, eight, nine games with opponents in our league that I can see Oisin really as effective as he was on Saturday.' McInnes is not short of options with his bloated squad having already added seven new faces with more set to follow. And he admits picking his starting 11 to face Aberdeen will be a challenge. He added: 'When everybody puts their best foot forward and there's a lot of people putting their hands up to play – that's great for a manager. 'Obviously I can only pick 11 guys.I think I could pick so many different 11s and I'd feel confident we could compete and get results. 'So I've got an idea about how I want to play and some of the players within that but we've still got quite a few days in training for the players and we've got a bounce game on Wednesday to try and top up the minutes for the others.'
